    Exploring the Training Factors that Influence the Role of Teaching Assistants to Teach to Students With SEND in a Mainstream Classroom in England

    With the implementation of inclusive education having become increasingly valued over the years, the training of Teaching Assistants (TAs) is now more important than ever, given that they work alongside pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (hereinafter SEND) in mainstream education classrooms. The current study explored the training factors that influence the role of TAs when it comes to teaching SEND students in mainstream classrooms in England during their one-year training period. This work aimed to increase understanding of how the training of TAs is seen to influence the development of their personal knowledge and professional skills. The study has significance for our comprehension of the connection between the TAs’ training and the quality of education in the classroom. In addition, this work investigated whether there existed a correlation between the teaching experience of TAs and their background information, such as their gender, age, grade level taught, years of teaching experience, and qualification level. A critical realist theoretical approach was adopted for this two-phased study, which involved the mixing of adaptive and grounded theories respectively. The multi-method project featured 13 case studies, each of which involved a trainee TA, his/her college tutor, and the classroom teacher who was supervising the trainee TA. The analysis was based on using semi-structured interviews, various questionnaires, and non-participant observation methods for each of these case studies during the TA’s one-year training period. The primary analysis of the research was completed by comparing the various kinds of data collected from the participants in the first and second data collection stages of each case. Further analysis involved cross-case analysis using a grounded theory approach, which made it possible to draw conclusions and put forth several core propositions. Compared with previous research, the findings of the current study reveal many implications for the training and deployment conditions of TAs, while they also challenge the prevailing approaches in many aspects, in addition to offering more diversified, enriched, and comprehensive explanations of the critical pedagogical issues

    Omics measures of ageing and disease susceptibility

    While genomics has been a major field of study for decades due to relatively inexpensive genotyping arrays, the recent advancement of technology has also allowed the measure and study of various “omics”. There are now numerous methods and platforms available that allow high throughput and high dimensional quantification of many types of biological molecules. Traditional genomics and transcriptomics are now joined by proteomics, metabolomics, glycomics, lipidomics and epigenomics. I was lucky to have access to a unique resource in the Orkney Complex Disease Study (ORCADES), a cohort of individuals from the Orkney Islands that are extremely deeply annotated. Approximately 1000 individuals in ORCADES have genomics, proteomics, lipidomics, glycomics, metabolomics, epigenomics, clinical risk factors and disease phenotypes, as well as body composition measurements from whole body scans. In addition to these cross-sectional omics and health related measures, these individuals also have linked electronic health records (EHR) available, allowing the assessment of the effect of these omics measures on incident disease over a ~10-year follow up period. In this thesis I use this phenotype rich resource to investigate the relationship between multiple types of omics measures and both ageing and health outcomes. First, I used the ORCADES data to construct measures of biological age (BA). The idea that there is an underlying rate at which the body deteriorates with age that varies between individuals of the same chronological age, this biological age, would be more indicative of health status, functional capacity and risk of age-related diseases than chronological age. Previous models estimating BA (ageing clocks) have predominantly been built using a single type of omics assay and comparison between different omics ageing clocks has been limited. I performed the most exhaustive comparison of different omics ageing clocks yet, with eleven clocks spanning nine different omics assays. I show that different omics clocks overlap in the information they provide about age, that some omics clocks track more generalised ageing while others track specific disease risk factors and that omics ageing clocks are prognostic of incident disease over and above chronological age. Second, I assessed whether individually or in multivariable models, omics measures are associated with health-related risk factors or prognostic of incident disease over 10 years post-assessment. I show that 2,686 single omics biomarkers are associated with 10 risk factors and 44 subsequent incident diseases. I also show that models built using multiple biomarkers from whole body scans, metabolomics, proteomics and clinical risk factors are prognostic of subsequent diabetes mellitus and that clinical risk factors are prognostic of incident hypertensive disorders, obesity, ischaemic heart disease and Framingham risk score. Third, I investigated the genetic architecture of a subset of the proteomics measures available in ORCADES, specifically 184 cardiovascular-related proteins. Combining genome-wide association (GWAS) summary statistics from ORCADES and 17 other cohorts from the SCALLOP Consortium, giving a maximum sample size of 26,494 individuals, I performed 184 genome-wide association meta-analyses (GWAMAs) on the levels of these proteins circulating in plasma. I discovered 592 independent significant loci associated with the levels of at least one protein. I found that between 8-37% of these significant loci colocalise with known expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL). I also find evidence of causal associations between 11 plasma protein levels and disease susceptibility using Mendelian randomisation, highlighting potential candidate drug targets

    The Relationship Between Climate Change and Food Insecurity In Sub-Saharan Africa

    Magister Artium (Development Studies) - MA(DVS)According to the research conducted for this thesis, climate change has a potential to be a hazard to food security in not only South Africa, but also to most of Sub-Saharan Africa. The threat is presented in terms of food distribution and consumption, including agricultural productivity. Food security is impacted by global warming, global warming in turn is a direct result of climate change since it affects the supply of food, its accessibility, how it is utilized, and whether or not people can afford it. The only way to mitigate the dangers is through an integrated policy approach that protects fertile land from global warming. The key point presented here is that Sub-Saharan Africa has all of the resources necessary to adapt to climate change and secure food supplies; nevertheless, it is critical that they first recognize the hazards that various agricultural products face because of global warming. However, a lot of emerging countries face significant challenges as a result of a lack of robust institutions, making policy changes difficult. The influence on food security will be significant, and it may be broken down into three categories: availability, access, and use. Systematic peer-reviewed literature reviews of climate change and food security research were undertaken utilizing the realist review approach as the methodology for this study. In order to alleviate the region's acute food insecurity, adaptation approaches were thoroughly investigated. This is related to development challenges, where adaptation is necessary to mitigate negative effects and improve the population's ability to participate in development processes. Finances are also a concern for poor countries, such as South Africa, because there is a disparity between the cost of adaptation and government subsidies. The remedy could come in the form of technology interventions that help to make food systems less vulnerable to dangers

    Can “sin industries” prove their legitimacy through CSR reporting? A study of UK tobacco and gambling companies

    Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the ways that sin industry companies attempt to utilise CSR reporting for legitimation. Design/methodology/approach: Conventional and summative content analyses were carried out on annual CSR reports in UK tobacco and gambling companies, juxtaposed against analysis of the actual behaviour of the companies, collectively and individually. Findings: The paper concludes that there is an ongoing tension between the business of sin industry companies and their attempts to establish and maintain any legitimacy, using CSR reporting in particular ways to try to prove their credentials to society and to engage salient stakeholder support. Ultimately, they aim to give themselves the scope for strategic choice to enable survival and financial flourishing. Research limitations/implications: Further research on CSR on other sin industries and in other jurisdictions with different regulatory situations could shed further light on the achievement or denial of different types of legitimacy. Studying different time periods as industries change would be of value. Practical implications: On a practical basis, the study offers guidelines to stakeholders on the use of CSR reports from sin companies, and suggests the establishment of objective external CSR reports, overseen by accounting regulators. Social implications: The paper provides an overview of the role of sin industries in society, and mitigating their harms. Originality/value: This study allowed for a comprehensive, dynamic and inclusive understanding of the interplay of CSR reporting and legitimacy by addressing conflicting interests between sin companies' social effects and inherent activities at the industry level. The methodology of multiple case study design in two sin industries combined content analysis of CSR reports, juxtaposed against analysis of behaviour in context. Previous research included the juxtaposition of actuality in analysis of only single case studies or particular issues. Thus, this research allows for a broader industry understanding. On a practical basis, the study offers guidelines to stakeholders on the use of CSR reports from sin companies, and suggests the establishment of objective external CSR reports, overseen by accounting regulators. At the social level, the paper provides an overview of sin industries in society, and mitigating their harms

    Conjunctures in Law and Development: Assemblages for Progress in Indian Agricultural Futures

    This dissertation asks: how are the legal, political, and social legacies of the Green Revolution and India's incorporation into the global knowledge economy shaping or undermining the emergent discourses, practices, and regulatory rationalities of India's current Climate Smart Agriculture development initiatives? To answer this question, I construct a theoretical/methodological framework that brings together conjunctural analysis, assemblage theory, Foucaultian governmentality, and transnational legal pluralism. I identify two previous historical eras of significant agricultural and developmental change in India: the Green Revolution (1950s-early 1970s) and the liberalization of Indian agriculture as part of India's broader incorporation into the global knowledge economy (1991-mid 2000s). I study the historical relationship between the modern Indian state and Indian farmers across these eras of agricultural and developmental transformation to investigate how they are informing current Climate Smart Agriculture programs, how these contemporary programs work, and the extent to which these programs and the political struggles they incite represent a new historical phase of state power in India. I argue that Climate Smart Agriculture programs and the accompanying introduction of Big Data technology in Indian agriculture should not be understood as a singular event or a unique and novel initiative, but as the most recent project of governmentality mediating the relationship between the Indian state and Indian farmers. This dissertation further shows how relationships between states in the Global South and farmers are shaped by the interplay of technologies (understood both conventionally and in the Foucaultian sense) that are constructed and regulated through the law. I simultaneously demonstrate how the entwined processes of postcolonial state- and subject-making in the domains of agriculture and development always invokes forms of resistance that often result in contradictory regulatory outcomes, which continue to establish the conditions for future political contestation. This dissertation contributes to the field of Socio-legal Studies at large, and the subfields of Law and Development, Law and Globalization/TWAIL, and Green Criminology
