    Architectures for Cognitive Radio Testbeds and Demonstrators – An Overview

    Wireless communication standards are developed at an ever-increasing rate of pace, and significant amounts of effort is put into research for new communication methods and concepts. On the physical layer, such topics include MIMO, cooperative communication, and error control coding, whereas research on the medium access layer includes link control, network topology, and cognitive radio. At the same time, implementations are moving from traditional fixed hardware architectures towards software, allowing more efficient development. Today, field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and regular desktop computers are fast enough to handle complete baseband processing chains, and there are several platforms, both open-source and commercial, providing such solutions. The aims of this paper is to give an overview of five of the available platforms and their characteristics, and compare the features and performance measures of the different systems

    RHINO: reconfigurable hardware interface for computation and radio

    Field-programmable gate arrays, or FPGAs, provide an attractive computing platform for software-defined radio applications. Their reconfigurable nature allows many digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms to be highly parallelised within the FPGA fabric, while their customisable I/O interfaces allow simple interfacing to analogue-to-digital converters (ADCs) and digital-to-analogue converters (DACs). However, FPGA boards that deliver sufficient performance to be useful in real-world applications are generally expensive. Rhino is an FPGA-based hardware processing platform that primarily supports software-defined radio applications. The final cost estimate for a complete Rhino system is under $1700, cheaper than similar FPGA boards that deliver much lower performance

    Fulfilling NASA's new vision for space exploration requires the development of sustainable, flexible and fault tolerant spacecraft control systems. The traditional development paradigm consists of the purchase or fabrication of hardware boards with fixed processor and/or Digital Signal Processing (DSP) components interconnected via a standardized bus system. This is followed by the purchase and/or development of software. This paradigm has several disadvantages for the development of systems to support NASA's new vision. Building a system to be fault tolerant increases the complexity and decreases the performance of included software. Standard bus design and conventional implementation produces natural bottlenecks. Configuring hardware components in systems containing common processors and DSPs is difficult initially and expensive or impossible to change later. The existence of Hardware Description Languages (HDLs), the recent increase in performance, density and radiation tolerance of Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), and Intellectual Property (IP) Cores provides the technology for reprogrammable Systems on a Chip (SOC). This technology supports a paradigm better suited for NASA's vision. Hardware and software production are melded for more effective development; they can both evolve together over time. Designers incorporating this technology into future avionics can benefit from its flexibility. Systems can be designed with improved fault isolation and tolerance using hardware instead of software. Also, these designs can be protected from obsolescence problems where maintenance is compromised via component and vendor availability.To investigate the flexibility of this technology, the core of the Central Processing Unit and Input/Output Processor of the Space Shuttle AP101S Computer were prototyped in Verilog HDL and synthesized into an Altera Stratix FPGA

    Design of Digital Advanced Systems Based on Programmable System on Chip

    This chapter fills up an advanced analysis of the state-of-the-art design in programmable SoC systems, giving a critical overall vision for every designer to implement real time operating systems and concurrent processing. The content of the chapter is divided in the next four main sections. First the evolution timeline of FPGA based systems is covered from its beginning until the last AP SoC chips. They are complex devices and it is necessary to have a well-known understanding to utilise them in the more efficient form possible. The more important advance digital systems structures and architectures are described. The embedded AP SoCs are analysed and main design methodologies are covered, focusing in hardware and co-design strategies. In this section is described the development of a real open source application that covers the fundamental parts in the design of a SoC system, ranging from the hardware development until the software design involving the embedded operating system and the user interface application. Finally, the system described in the last section is tested in a real scientific experiment and the results are evaluated

This thesis presents a analog to digital converter for this task and a new low-power inductive current sensor for deployment in a standard circuit breaker box.     A PCIe-based readout and control board to interface with new-generation detectors for the LHC upgrade

    Questa tesi si riferisce principalmente al lavoro di design, sviluppo, produzione e validazione di una nuova scheda PCIe, chiamata Pixel-ROD (Pixel Read Out Driver), come naturale prosecuzione della precedente serie di schede di readout, oggi montate nel Pixel Detector di ATLAS. In modo particolare, questa scheda è stata pensata come evoluzione per l’elettronica off-detector presente ad ATLAS, la quale è principalmente composta da schede VME, conosciute come Back Of Crate (BOC) e Read Out Driver (ROD). Inoltre, tutte le schede ROD sono state commissionate e disegnate dal Laboratorio di Progettazione Elettronica dell’INFN e del DIFA a Bologna. Il progetto della scheda Pixel-ROD è cominciato due anni fa, poichè il trend generale per l’evoluzione dell’elettronica off-detector di LHC è quello di abbandonare la più vecchia interfaccia VME, per passare a quelle più nuove e veloci (come il PCIe). Inoltre, poichè i rivelatori di ATLAS e CMS saranno accomunati dallo stesso chip di readout che interfaccerà i futuri Pixel Detector, la Pixel-ROD potrebbe essere usata non solo per l’evoluzione di ATLAS ma anche per altri esperimenti. La caratteristica principale della Pixel-ROD è la possibilità di utilizzo sia come scheda di readout singola, sia in una catena reale di acquisizione dati, che si interfaccia con dispositivi di terze parti. Il lavoro che ho svolto in questa tesi si concentra principalmente sul design, lo sviluppo e l’ottimizzazione della scheda prima della sua fabbricazione. Dopo questa fase, utilizzando i prototipi prodotti, mi sono concentrato sul lavoro di test e validazione dei singoli componenti e delle singole interfacce montate sulla scheda. Questa fase non è ancora terminata e richiede molto tempo per essere svolta, a causa della complessità dell’elettronica che è presente sulla Pixel-ROD

    Scientific instruments as payload of current space missions are often equipped with high-resolution sensors. Thereby, especially camera-based instruments produce a vast amount of data. To obtain the desired scientific information, this data usually is processed on ground. Due to the high distance of missions within the solar system, the data rate for downlink to the ground station is strictly limited. The volume of scientific relevant data is usually less compared to the obtained raw data. Therefore, processing already has to be carried out on-board the spacecraft. An example of such an instrument is the Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager (PHI) on-board Solar Orbiter. For acquisition, storage and processing of images, the instrument is equipped with a Data Processing Module (DPM). It makes use of heterogeneous computing based on a dedicated LEON3 processor in combination with two reconfigurable Xilinx Virtex-4 Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). The thesis will provide an overview of the available space-grade processing components (processors and FPGAs) which fulfill the requirements of deepspace missions. It also presents existing processing platforms which are based upon a heterogeneous system combining processors and FPGAs. This also includes the DPM of the PHI instrument, whose architecture will be introduced in detail. As core contribution of this thesis, a framework will be presented which enables high-performance image processing on such hardware-based systems while retaining software-like flexibility. This framework mainly consists of a variety of modules for hardware acceleration which are integrated seamlessly into the data flow of the on-board software. Supplementary, it makes extensive use of the dynamic in-flight reconfigurability of the used Virtex-4 FPGAs. The flexibility of the presented framework is proven by means of multiple examples from within the image processing of the PHI instrument. The framework is analyzed with respect to processing performance as well as power consumption.Wissenschaftliche Instrumente auf aktuellen Raumfahrtmissionen sind oft mit hochauflösenden Sensoren ausgestattet. Insbesondere kamerabasierte Instrumente produzieren dabei eine große Menge an Daten. Diese werden üblicherweise nach dem Empfang auf der Erde weiterverarbeitet, um daraus wissenschaftlich relevante Informationen zu gewinnen. Aufgrund der großen Entfernung von Missionen innerhalb unseres Sonnensystems ist die Datenrate zur Übertragung an die Bodenstation oft sehr begrenzt. Das Volumen der wissenschaftlich relevanten Daten ist meist deutlich kleiner als die aufgenommenen Rohdaten. Daher ist es vorteilhaft, diese bereits an Board der Sonde zu verarbeiten. Ein Beispiel für solch ein Instrument ist der Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager (PHI) an Bord von Solar Orbiter. Um die Daten aufzunehmen, zu speichern und zu verarbeiten, ist das Instrument mit einem Data Processing Module (DPM) ausgestattet. Dieses nutzt ein heterogenes Rechnersystem aus einem dedizierten LEON3 Prozessor, zusammen mit zwei rekonfigurierbaren Xilinx Virtex-4 Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). Die folgende Arbeit gibt einen Überblick über verfügbare Komponenten zur Datenverarbeitung (Prozessoren und FPGAs), die den Anforderungen von Raumfahrtmissionen gerecht werden, und stellt einige existierende Plattformen vor, die auf einem heterogenen System aus Prozessor und FPGA basieren. Hierzu gehört auch das Data Processing Module des PHI Instrumentes, dessen Architektur im Verlauf dieser Arbeit beschrieben wird. Als Kernelement der Dissertation wird ein Framework vorgestellt, das sowohl eine performante, als auch eine flexible Bilddatenverarbeitung auf einem solchen System ermöglicht. Dieses Framework besteht aus verschiedenen Modulen zur Hardwarebeschleunigung und bindet diese nahtlos in den Datenfluss der On-Board Software ein. Dabei wird außerdem die Möglichkeit genutzt, die eingesetzten Virtex-4 FPGAs dynamisch zur Laufzeit zu rekonfigurieren. Die Flexibilität des vorgestellten Frameworks wird anhand mehrerer Fallbeispiele aus der Bildverarbeitung von PHI dargestellt.     The development of a node for a hardware reconfigurable parallel processor

    This dissertation concerns the design and implementation of a node for a hardware reconfigurable parallel processor. The hardware that was developed allows for the further development of a parallel processor with configurable hardware acceleration. Each node in the system has a standard microprocessor and reconfigurable logic device and has high speed communications channels for inter-node communication. The design of the node provided high-speed serial communications channels allowing the implementation of various network topographies. The node also provided a PCI master interface to provide an external interface and communicate with local nodes on the bus. A high speed RlSC processor provided communication and system control functions and the reconfigurable logic device provided communication interfaces and data processing functions. The node was designed and implemented as a PCI card that interfaced a standard PCI bus. VHDL designs for logic devices that provided system support were developed, VHDL designs for the reconfigurable logic FPGA and software including drivers and system software were written for the node. The 64-bit version Linux operating system was then ported to the processor providing a UNIX environment for the system. The node functioned as specified and parallel and hardware accelerated processing was demonstrated. The hardware acceleration was shown to provide substantial performance benefits for the system

    A flexible digital communications system for education

    This thesis presents the design for a flexible digital communications system based on reprogrammable special-purpose microprocessors and reconfigurable hardware devices for use in the Digital Communications Laboratory (ECE 363) at the University of Illinois. The new design will serve as a replacement for the analog system currently in use, as well as provide a platform for further course development. The ECE 363 coursework involves BER measurements under different system configurations and parameters. The relevance of this work is that students acquire an intuition for which parts of the system are critical paths to overall system performance. A vital component to building this intuition is the ability to reconfigure the system to make reasonable comparisons between BER curves. The original lab equipment was designed in blocks to allow physical reconfiguration of the system. Unfortunately, the digital receiver is one of those blocks and is hardwired for its task, making receiver configuration difficult. A software-based configurable system is one alternative, but software systems are often too slow to run at high bitrates. Therefore, a system has been designed which leverages the advantages of both hardware and software design
