    Information actors beyond modernity and coloniality in times of climate change:A comparative design ethnography on the making of monitors for sustainable futures in Curaçao and Amsterdam, between 2019-2022

    In his dissertation, Mr. Goilo developed a cutting-edge theoretical framework for an Anthropology of Information. This study compares information in the context of modernity in Amsterdam and coloniality in Curaçao through the making process of monitors and develops five ways to understand how information can act towards sustainable futures. The research also discusses how the two contexts, that is modernity and coloniality, have been in informational symbiosis for centuries which is producing negative informational side effects within the age of the Anthropocene. By exploring the modernity-coloniality symbiosis of information, the author explains how scholars, policymakers, and data-analysts can act through historical and structural roots of contemporary global inequities related to the production and distribution of information. Ultimately, the five theses propose conditions towards the collective production of knowledge towards a more sustainable planet

    Resource-aware scheduling for 2D/3D multi-/many-core processor-memory systems

    This dissertation addresses the complexities of 2D/3D multi-/many-core processor-memory systems, focusing on two key areas: enhancing timing predictability in real-time multi-core processors and optimizing performance within thermal constraints. The integration of an increasing number of transistors into compact chip designs, while boosting computational capacity, presents challenges in resource contention and thermal management. The first part of the thesis improves timing predictability. We enhance shared cache interference analysis for set-associative caches, advancing the calculation of Worst-Case Execution Time (WCET). This development enables accurate assessment of cache interference and the effectiveness of partitioned schedulers in real-world scenarios. We introduce TCPS, a novel task and cache-aware partitioned scheduler that optimizes cache partitioning based on task-specific WCET sensitivity, leading to improved schedulability and predictability. Our research explores various cache and scheduling configurations, providing insights into their performance trade-offs. The second part focuses on thermal management in 2D/3D many-core systems. Recognizing the limitations of Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS) in S-NUCA many-core processors, we propose synchronous thread migrations as a thermal management strategy. This approach culminates in the HotPotato scheduler, which balances performance and thermal safety. We also introduce 3D-TTP, a transient temperature-aware power budgeting strategy for 3D-stacked systems, reducing the need for Dynamic Thermal Management (DTM) activation. Finally, we present 3QUTM, a novel method for 3D-stacked systems that combines core DVFS and memory bank Low Power Modes with a learning algorithm, optimizing response times within thermal limits. This research contributes significantly to enhancing performance and thermal management in advanced processor-memory systems

    Archaeological palaeoenvironmental archives: challenges and potential

    This Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) sponsored collaborative doctoral project represents one of the most significant efforts to collate quantitative and qualitative data that can elucidate practices related to archaeological palaeoenvironmental archiving in England. The research has revealed that archived palaeoenvironmental remains are valuable resources for archaeological research and can clarify subjects that include the adoption and importation of exotic species, plant and insect invasion, human health and diet, and plant and animal husbandry practices. In addition to scientific research, archived palaeoenvironmental remains can provide evidence-based narratives of human resilience and climate change and offer evidence of the scientific process, making them ideal resources for public science engagement. These areas of potential have been realised at an imperative time; given that waterlogged palaeoenvironmental remains at significant sites such as Star Carr, Must Farm, and Flag Fen, archaeological deposits in towns and cities are at risk of decay due to climate change-related factors, and unsustainable agricultural practices. Innovative approaches to collecting and archiving palaeoenvironmental remains and maintaining existing archives will permit the creation of an accessible and thorough national resource that can service archaeologists and researchers in the related fields of biology and natural history. Furthermore, a concerted effort to recognise absences in archaeological archives, matched by an effort to supply these deficiencies, can produce a resource that can contribute to an enduring geographical and temporal record of England's biodiversity, which can be used in perpetuity in the face of diminishing archaeological and contemporary natural resources. To realise these opportunities, particular challenges must be overcome. The most prominent of these include inconsistent collection policies resulting from pressures associated with shortages in storage capacity and declining specialist knowledge in museums and repositories combined with variable curation practices. Many of these challenges can be resolved by developing a dedicated storage facility that can focus on the ongoing conservation and curation of palaeoenvironmental remains. Combined with an OASIS + module designed to handle and disseminate data pertaining to palaeoenvironmental archives, remains would be findable, accessible, and interoperable with biological archives and collections worldwide. Providing a national centre for curating palaeoenvironmental remains and a dedicated digital repository will require significant funding. Funding sources could be identified through collaboration with other disciplines. If sufficient funding cannot be identified, options that would require less financial investment, such as high-level archive audits and the production of guidance documents, will be able to assist all stakeholders with the improved curation, management, and promotion of the archived resource

    This thesis illustrates the process of establishing Ad'art business approach, a marketing agency whose main focus is digital marketing services ranging from content generation to social media management to website creation that relies mainly on artificial intelligence tools to deliver them and provide an extra payment model that is partnership-based model. This work not only shows the marketing, financial, and business strategy, as well as the market study, but it also includes a case study of a journey with a client who partnered with Ad'art. The document begins with the innovation framework in order to comprehend the company's core innovative component. Then, using a survey, we conducted a market study to determine to what extent small and medium-sized businesses face strategic and financial marketing challenges. Furthermore, we developed a detailed marketing plan that demonstrates the overall strategy, the promotion and publicity implementation plan, and explains the pricing strategy choice. Following that, we presented the financial strategy, which included the costs and estimated turnover in simple tables as well as a professional Excel sheet provided by the IAPNG. We continued with a business plan that included all of the above elements as well as a deeper look into the market using several practices such as PESTEL, SWOT analysis, the process and benchmarking. Finally, we finished with a showcase report to illustrate all of the work Ad'art did for Portisia, the first client, with examples. All of the reports were reviewed by experts in the field, and after consulting with a lawyer, the activity was officially created on May 2, 2023, under activity numbers 1333 for publicity and 1319 for commission.Esta tese ilustra o processo de estabelecimento da abordagem de negócio da Ad'art, uma agência de marketing cujo foco principal são os serviços de marketing digital que vão desde a geração de conteúdos à gestão de redes sociais e à criação de websites, que se baseia principalmente em ferramentas de inteligência artificial para os prestar e fornece um modelo de pagamento extra que é o modelo baseado em parcerias. Este trabalho não só apresenta a estratégia de marketing, financeira e de negócio, bem como o estudo de mercado, mas também inclui um estudo de caso de uma jornada com um cliente que fez parceria com a Ad'art. O documento começa com o enquadramento da inovação, de modo a compreender a componente inovadora central da empresa. Depois, através de um inquérito, realizámos um estudo de mercado para determinar em que medida as pequenas e médias empresas enfrentam desafios de marketing estratégicos e financeiros. Além disso, desenvolvemos um plano de marketing pormenorizado que demonstra a estratégia global, o plano de implementação da promoção e da publicidade e explica a escolha da estratégia de preços. Em seguida, apresentámos a estratégia financeira, que incluía os custos e o volume de negócios estimado em tabelas simples, bem como uma folha de Excel profissional fornecida pelo IAPNG. Continuámos com um plano de negócios que incluía todos os elementos acima referidos, bem como uma análise mais profunda do mercado, utilizando várias práticas como PESTEL, análise SWOT, o processo e benchmarking.     Ethnographies of Collaborative Economies across Europe: Understanding Sharing and Caring

    "Sharing economy" and "collaborative economy" refer to a proliferation of initiatives, business models, digital platforms and forms of work that characterise contemporary life: from community-led initiatives and activist campaigns, to the impact of global sharing platforms in contexts such as network hospitality, transportation, etc. Sharing the common lens of ethnographic methods, this book presents in-depth examinations of collaborative economy phenomena. The book combines qualitative research and ethnographic methodology with a range of different collaborative economy case studies and topics across Europe. It uniquely offers a truly interdisciplinary approach. It emerges from a unique, long-term, multinational, cross-European collaboration between researchers from various disciplines (e.g., sociology, anthropology, geography, business studies, law, computing, information systems), career stages, and epistemological backgrounds, brought together by a shared research interest in the collaborative economy. This book is a further contribution to the in-depth qualitative understanding of the complexities of the collaborative economy phenomenon. These rich accounts contribute to the painting of a complex landscape that spans several countries and regions, and diverse political, cultural, and organisational backdrops.     Exploring Compassion-Driven Interaction: Bridging Buddhist Theory and Contemplative Practice Through Arts-led Research-through-Design

    Compassion cultivation focuses on developing a genuine concern for others and a willingness to alleviate their suffering. As understandings of the benefits of compassion cultivation on wellbeing have evolved, an increasing interest in designing technologies for this context have followed. However, while scientific research focuses on measuring and evaluating compassion, designerly understandings of compassion informing human-computer interaction have been less explored. We are currently confronted with huge global challenges and our entanglement with technology brings paradoxes and existential tensions related to wellbeing and human flourishing. Viewing technologies as mediators of values and morality, human-computer interaction has a stake in shaping our possible futures. A shift in the field to welcoming a plurality of worldviews, invites opportunities to authentically integrate knowledge from ancient wisdom traditions into how and why we design. This research aims to advance understandings of compassion cultivation for designing technologies by developing novel approaches to research inspired by Buddhist philosophy and practice. This thesis draws upon an arts-led research-through-design approach and spiritual practice. The findings and insights from the studies contribute primarily to the areas of soma design, first-person research and design for wellbeing. The main contributions to knowledge are design guidelines emerging from three case studies: Understanding Tonglen, Wish Happiness, and Inner Suchness comprising one autoethnography and two concept-driven design artefacts for public exhibition. While in the act of researching, the contemplative practitioner-researcher, a research persona, emerged to support authentic engagement and embodied understandings of the dynamic unfolding processes of the practice.     Co-designing the inflammatory arthritis self-management (aiM) intervention.

    Self-management is an integral part of care for people living with inflammatory arthritis. The benefits of self-management interventions for people living with long-term conditions are well established. To date, most of the inflammatory arthritis self-management interventions have targeted only rheumatoid arthritis. Therefore, there is a need for a self-management intervention that reaches beyond just people living with rheumatoid arthritis. The overarching aim of this project was to co-design a self-management intervention for people across the inflammatory arthritis spectrum, based on the needs and preferences of co-designers (i.e. both people living with IA and healthcare professionals), as well as on the scientific literature. This project commenced with a mixed-method systematic review exploring the effectiveness and acceptability of existing inflammatory arthritis self-management interventions. Then, a two-phase, sequential multi-methods approach was employed. The first phase involved five asynchronous co-design workshops, guided by the Intervention Mapping Framework (Bartholomew et al. 2016). The second phase then explored participants' experience in participating in co-design research, including the barriers and facilitators to co-design. The mixed-method systematic review demonstrated that inflammatory arthritis self-management interventions produced a clinically meaningful reduction in fatigue and pain in people living with inflammatory arthritis. There was also some data to suggest that inflammatory arthritis self-management interventions have a beneficial effect on self-efficacy; knowledge; communication; health- related quality of life; and engagement with self-management behaviours. Additionally, the review found that inflammatory arthritis self-management interventions are generally acceptable to people living with inflammatory arthritis and healthcare professionals. Workshop findings provided important insight into the health problems and self-management needs of people living with inflammatory arthritis. The workshops also helped to identify the key content and features of the developed self-management intervention - i.e. the inflAmmatory arthrItis self-Management (aiM) intervention. Participants reported having an overall positive experience participating in the workshops, which provided them with an opportunity to meet others living with IA. The use of asynchronous workshops was felt to contribute to the participants' high attendance rate and the study's low attrition, despite IT-issues that were reported as a barrier to the participants' ability to fully participate in the workshops. This project developed a novel self-management intervention, which aims to improve the health status of people living with inflammatory arthritis through increased engagement with self-management strategies. The aiM intervention is based on the needs and preferences of the co-designers, and is grounded in theory and evidence. The findings have also provided new knowledge regarding the health problems related to people living with inflammatory arthritis, their self-management needs, and mechanisms that facilitate and inhibit co-design processes in an asynchronous remote context. Moving forward, it is recommended that the aiM intervention be tested for its feasibility and acceptability
