A terminal molybdenum carbide prepared by methylidyne deprotonation
The carbide anion [CMo{N(R)Ar}_3]ā [R = C(CD_3)_2CH_3, Ar = C_6H_3Me_2-3,5], is obtained by deprotonation of the corresponding methylidyne compound, [HCMo{N(R)Ar}_3], and is characterized by X-ray diffraction as its {K(benzo-15-crown-5)_2}+ salt, thereby providing precedent for the carbon atom as a terminal substituent in transition-metal chemistry
Awareness, requirements and barriers to use of Assistive Technology designed to enable independence of people suffering from Dementia (ATD)

The aim of the study was to explore barriers to the uptake of, and the unmet needs for, assistive technology for dementia (ATD) The work was carried out with family carers of people with dementia because carers are often the purchasers, end users and main beneficiaries of this type of technology. Focus groups were used to explore carersā views on ATD use, and the problems that might be addressed by ATD, in order to develop a questionnaire for dementia carers. The questionnaire was administered at Alzheimerās Society carer support groups in South Bucks and in Hillingdon Borough (UK). None of the 16 focus group participants or the 42 respondents to the questionnaire had any personal experience of ATD. The dementia carers reported a number of concerns, problems and unmet needs that could be addressed by existing, commercially available ATD products. Some needs for new technology development were identified in the study, but the lack of awareness of ATD appears to be the most important barrier to technology adoption

Elastic and thermodynamic properties of the shape-memory alloy AuZn
The current work reports on the elastic shear moduli, internal friction, and
the specific heat of the B2 cubic ordered alloy AuZn as a function of
temperature. Measurements were made on single-crystal and polycrystalline
samples using Resonant Ultrasound Spectroscopy (RUS), semi-adiabatic
calorimetry and stress-strain measurements. Our results confirm that this alloy
exhibits the shape-memory effect and a phase transition at 64.75 K that appears
to be continuous (second-order) from the specific heat data. It is argued that
the combination of equiatomic composition and a low transformation temperature
constrain the chemical potential and its derivatives to exhibit behavior that
lies at the borderline between that of a first-order (discontinuous) and a
continuous phase transition. The acoustic dissipation does not peak at the
transtion temperature as expected, but shows a maximum well into the
low-temperature phase. The Debye temeprature value of 219 K, obtained from the
low-temperature specific heat data is in favorable agreement with that
determined from the acoustic data (207 K) above the transition.Comment: 25 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
