Energy-Efficient Vector OFDM PLC Systems with Dynamic Peak-Based Threshold Estimation
© 2013 IEEE. Power line communication (PLC) has made remarkable strides to become a key enabler of smart grid and its applications. Existing PLC systems are based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), which has a high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). This paper presents vector OFDM (VOFDM) with advanced signal processing at the receiver to improve the energy efficiency of the PLC system. Results show that, due to its low PAPR properties, VOFDM is less sensitive to impulsive noise and provides a reduction of 5.8 dB in transmit power requirement relative to conventional OFDM. Furthermore, unlike the existing impulsive noise cancellation methods, the adopted signal processing technique also improves the SNR at the receiver by 2.1 dB, which further reduces the power requirement of the PLC transceiver. Together, these can simplify design, reduce cost, and improve energy efficiency of future PLC transceivers
State-of-the-art in Power Line Communications: from the Applications to the Medium
In recent decades, power line communication has attracted considerable
attention from the research community and industry, as well as from regulatory

Fifty Years of Noise Modeling and Mitigation in Power-Line Communications.
Building on the ubiquity of electric power infrastructure, power line communications (PLC) has been successfully used in diverse application scenarios, including the smart grid and in-home broadband communications systems as well as industrial and home automation. However, the power line channel exhibits deleterious properties, one of which is its hostile noise environment. This article aims for providing a review of noise modeling and mitigation techniques in PLC. Specifically, a comprehensive review of representative noise models developed over the past fifty years is presented, including both the empirical models based on measurement campaigns and simplified mathematical models. Following this, we provide an extensive survey of the suite of noise mitigation schemes, categorizing them into mitigation at the transmitter as well as parametric and non-parametric techniques employed at the receiver. Furthermore, since the accuracy of channel estimation in PLC is affected by noise, we review the literature of joint noise mitigation and channel estimation solutions. Finally, a number of directions are outlined for future research on both noise modeling and mitigation in PLC
Performance of Coded Multi-Line Copper Wire for G.fast Communications in the Presence of Impulsive Noise
In this paper, we focus on the design of a multi-line
copper wire (MLCW) communication system. First, we construct
our proposed MLCW channel and verify its characteristics based
on the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. In addition, we apply Middleton
class A impulsive noise (IN) to the copper channel for further
investigation. Second, the MIMO G.fast system is adopted utilizing
the proposed MLCW channel model and is compared to a single
line G-fast system. Second, the performance of the coded system
is obtained utilizing concatenated interleaved Reed-Solomon (RS)
code with four-dimensional trellis-coded modulation (4D TCM), and
compared to the single line G-fast system. Simulations are obtained
for high quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) constellations
that are commonly used with G-fast communications, the results
demonstrate that the bit error rate (BER) performance of the coded
MLCW system shows an improvement compared to the single line
G-fast systems
SαS noise suppression for OFDM wireless communication in rayleight channel
Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a form of multi-carrier transmission technique widely used in the modern wireless network to achieve high-speed data transmission with good spectral efficiency. However, in impulsive noise environement BER performances of these systems, originally designed for a Gaussian noise model, are much degraded. In this paper, a new symmetric-alpha-stable (SαS) noise suppression technique based conjointly on adaptive modulation, convolutional coding (AMC) and Recursive Least Square (RLS) filtering is presented. The proposed scheme is applied on OFDM system in Rayleigh fading channel. The transmissions are analyzed under different combinations of digital modulation schemes (BPSK, QPSK, 16-QAM, 64-QAM) and convolutional code rates (1/2, 2/3, 3/4). Simulation results show that our proposed hybrid technique provides effective impulsive noise cancelation in OFDM system and exhibits better BER performance
