In this thesis we address the problem of integrated software pipelining for clustered VLIW architectures. The phases that are integrated and solved as one combined problem are: cluster assignment, instruction selection, scheduling, register allocation and spilling. As a first step we describe two methods for integrated code generation of basic blocks. The first method is optimal and based on integer linear programming. The second method is a heuristic based on genetic algorithms. We then extend the integer linear programming model to modulo scheduling. To the best of our knowledge this is the first time anybody has optimally solved the modulo scheduling problem for clustered architectures with instruction selection and cluster assignment integrated. We also show that optimal spilling is closely related to optimal register allocation when the register files are clustered. In fact, optimal spilling is as simple as adding an additional virtual register file representing the memory and have transfer instructions to and from this register file corresponding to stores and loads. Our algorithm for modulo scheduling iteratively considers schedules with increasing number of schedule slots. A problem with such an iterative method is that if the initiation interval is not equal to the lower bound there is no way to determine whether the found solution is optimal or not. We have proven that for a class of architectures that we call transfer free, we can set an upper bound on the schedule length. I.e., we can prove when a found modulo schedule with initiation interval larger than the lower bound is optimal. Experiments have been conducted to show the usefulness and limitations of our optimal methods. For the basic block case we compare the optimal method to the heuristic based on genetic algorithms. Compositional and nutritional properties of tef and tef-based food products

    Get PDF
In this PhD study, nutritional and health importance of tef, an ancient cereal, was studied. Tef is a cereal originated in Ethiopia where it has been used as a staple cereal. Currently, this cereal is becoming popular in the western countries, however, there is scarcity of information regarding its nutritional and health benefits. This study focused on key nutritional issues in tef flour, injera, porridge and bread: phenolic content and antioxidant capacity, mineral content and bioaccessibility, starch digestibility, protein digestibility and its compliance as a gluten free ingredient. The results showed that tef contains higher Fe, Zn and Ca than other cereals and fairly high amount of digestible proteins. Tef also contains high phenolic content and antioxidant capacity. It is also in compliance with the European Union Food Regulation Directive as a gluten free cereal. Fresh traditional foods such as tef injera-pancake and porridges may cause high post prandial glucose level, while fresh conventional tef bread could only cause a moderate increase in blood glucose level

Identity preservation & traceability: the state of the art - from a grain perspective (status of agricultural quality systems / traceability / certification systems)

A descriptive paper on the state of identity preservation and traceability (IPT) as it relates domestically and internationally to food safety and economics. While not exhaustive, it is illustrative of trends. Identity preservation and traceability (IPT) are not new concepts; however, the growth of public and business interest and concerns regarding them has grown tremendously during the past decade due to many events, which has resulted in these concepts joining together within a single concept (with the same title). This paper, while attempting to be thorough, will highlight the major systems of IPT from a US business perspective. Before and during the research of this study many companies and organizations have been created, bought out, or simply gone out of business. Government and non-government organizations have changed regulations and how they have adapted to current world events. Thus the state of IPT will be a sampling of the major players that are in existence during the research. Several of the examples of IPT programs will be of situations that affect the US grain industry, however, other examples will be provided.;Scope of this work; to provide an introduction to, and summary of, identity preservation and traceability (IPT) systems and programs presently available, develop a conceptual model of IPT at the farmer level, and interpretation of the overall art.;The purpose of this research is to provide a sampling of government, industry, and company approaches towards identity preservation and traceability (IPT) systems from the 1990s to early 2007. From this the audience should gain a better understanding of the complexity of IPT systems, rules that it functions under, how IPT is shaped and modified; primary, support, and ancillary components, and the diverse reasons why IPT is critical for food safety and the market.;The format of this work starts with IPT history followed by the theory, design, and general components of IPT, examples of IPT programs and standards, examples of auditing and laboratory firms, chapters that discuss domestic/foreign policy and advisory groups, software providers, process facilitators, food recalls/insurance, cost-benefit spreadsheet that focuses on farm level IP for comparison, farmer IP questionnaire, interpretation, conclusion, and appendixes, related products guide, glossary, directory of resources, and works cited

The copyright consumers' bargain defining the rights to commercial copies of copyright works

    Get PDF
This thesis aims at defining, both legally and normatively, the nature and scope of consumers' rights to commercial copies of copyright works as an essential means to preserve the coherence and legitimacy of copyright. It explores the interaction between: ( 1) technological developments, which empower consumers to experience copyright works in unprecedented ways, but also augment copyright holders' control over access to and use of their works; (2) the progressive expansion in scope of copyright holders' exclusive rights as conferred by copyright law; and (3) the contract terms and technological protection measures under which copyright works are made available to consumers. The nature and scope of consumers' rights to commercial copies of copyright works are defined by applying property law and theory, in particular, through an analysis of the concepts of ownership, property limitations and the numerus clausus principle. The nature and scope of consumers' rights to commercial copies of copyright works are also analyzed through the application of consumer protection law and theory. The thesis explores the use of consumer law concepts such as implied obligations of quality, fitness for purpose, title, quiet possession, information disclosure requirements and prohibitions of unfair practices to assert claims against restrictions on uses of commercial copies of copyright works. Commercial copies of copyright works emerge as a peculiar form of personal property, the rights in which are determined to a large extent by the exceptions to copyright infringement laid out in Canada's Copyright Act or similar statutes in other jurisdictions, and by the commercial transactions through which consumers access copyright works. Consumers' ownership rights to commercial copies of copyright works are progressively eroding. The thesis provides various recommendations to clarify and strengthen consumers' rights to commercial copies of copyright works on the basis of the prima facie normative force of ownership freedoms and the instrumental justifications of copyright to incent the creation and the dissemination of copyright works
