    Exploratory Browsing

    In recent years the digital media has influenced many areas of our life. The transition from analogue to digital has substantially changed our ways of dealing with media collections. Today‟s interfaces for managing digital media mainly offer fixed linear models corresponding to the underlying technical concepts (folders, events, albums, etc.), or the metaphors borrowed from the analogue counterparts (e.g., stacks, film rolls). However, people‟s mental interpretations of their media collections often go beyond the scope of linear scan. Besides explicit search with specific goals, current interfaces can not sufficiently support the explorative and often non-linear behavior. This dissertation presents an exploration of interface design to enhance the browsing experience with media collections. The main outcome of this thesis is a new model of Exploratory Browsing to guide the design of interfaces to support the full range of browsing activities, especially the Exploratory Browsing. We define Exploratory Browsing as the behavior when the user is uncertain about her or his targets and needs to discover areas of interest (exploratory), in which she or he can explore in detail and possibly find some acceptable items (browsing). According to the browsing objectives, we group browsing activities into three categories: Search Browsing, General Purpose Browsing and Serendipitous Browsing. In the context of this thesis, Exploratory Browsing refers to the latter two browsing activities, which goes beyond explicit search with specific objectives. We systematically explore the design space of interfaces to support the Exploratory Browsing experience. Applying the methodology of User-Centered Design, we develop eight prototypes, covering two main usage contexts of browsing with personal collections and in online communities. The main studied media types are photographs and music. The main contribution of this thesis lies in deepening the understanding of how people‟s exploratory behavior has an impact on the interface design. This thesis contributes to the field of interface design for media collections in several aspects. With the goal to inform the interface design to support the Exploratory Browsing experience with media collections, we present a model of Exploratory Browsing, covering the full range of exploratory activities around media collections. We investigate this model in different usage contexts and develop eight prototypes. The substantial implications gathered during the development and evaluation of these prototypes inform the further refinement of our model: We uncover the underlying transitional relations between browsing activities and discover several stimulators to encourage a fluid and effective activity transition. Based on this model, we propose a catalogue of general interface characteristics, and employ this catalogue as criteria to analyze the effectiveness of our prototypes.     On cross-domain social semantic learning

    Approximately 2.4 billion people are now connected to the Internet, generating massive amounts of data through laptops, mobile phones, sensors and other electronic devices or gadgets. Not surprisingly then, ninety percent of the world's digital data was created in the last two years. This massive explosion of data provides tremendous opportunity to study, model and improve conceptual and physical systems from which the data is produced. It also permits scientists to test pre-existing hypotheses in various fields with large scale experimental evidence. Thus, developing computational algorithms that automatically explores this data is the holy grail of the current generation of computer scientists. Making sense of this data algorithmically can be a complex process, specifically due to two reasons. Firstly, the data is generated by different devices, capturing different aspects of information and resides in different web resources/ platforms on the Internet. Therefore, even if two pieces of data bear singular conceptual similarity, their generation, format and domain of existence on the web can make them seem considerably dissimilar. Secondly, since humans are social creatures, the data often possesses inherent but murky correlations, primarily caused by the causal nature of direct or indirect social interactions. This drastically alters what algorithms must now achieve, necessitating intelligent comprehension of the underlying social nature and semantic contexts within the disparate domain data and a quantifiable way of transferring knowledge gained from one domain to another. Finally, the data is often encountered as a stream and not as static pages on the Internet. Therefore, we must learn, and re-learn as the stream propagates. The main objective of this dissertation is to develop learning algorithms that can identify specific patterns in one domain of data which can consequently augment predictive performance in another domain. The research explores existence of specific data domains which can function in synergy with another and more importantly, proposes models to quantify the synergetic information transfer among such domains. We include large-scale data from various domains in our study: social media data from Twitter, multimedia video data from YouTube, video search query data from Bing Videos, Natural Language search queries from the web, Internet resources in form of web logs (blogs) and spatio-temporal social trends from Twitter. Our work presents a series of solutions to address the key challenges in cross-domain learning, particularly in the field of social and semantic data. We propose the concept of bridging media from disparate sources by building a common latent topic space, which represents one of the first attempts toward answering sociological problems using cross-domain (social) media. This allows information transfer between social and non-social domains, fostering real-time socially relevant applications. We also engineer a concept network from the semantic web, called semNet, that can assist in identifying concept relations and modeling information granularity for robust natural language search. Further, by studying spatio-temporal patterns in this data, we can discover categorical concepts that stimulate collective attention within user groups.Includes bibliographical references (pages 210-214)

    Representing short sequences in the context of a model organism genome

    In the post-genomics era, the sheer volume of data is overwhelming without appropriate tools for data integration and analysis. Studying genomic sequences in the context of other related genomic sequences, i.e. comparative genomics, is a powerful technique enabling the identification of functionally interesting sequence regions based on the principal that similar sequences tend to be either homologous or provide similar functionality. Costs associated with full genome sequencing make it infeasible to sequence every genome of interest. Consequently, simple, smaller genomes are used as model organisms for more complex organisms, for instance, Mouse/Human. An annotated model organism provides a source of annotation for transcribed sequences and other gene regions of the more complex organism based on sequence homology. For example, the gene annotations from the model organism aid interpretation of expression studies in more complex organisms. To assist with comparative genomics research in the Arabidopsis/Brassica (Thale-cress/Canola) model-crop pair, a web-based, graphical genome browser (BioViz) was developed to display short Brassica genomic sequences in the context of the Arabidopsis model organism genome. This involved the development of graphical representations to integrate data from multiple sources and tools, and a novel user interface to provide the user with a more interactive web-based browsing experience. While BioViz was developed for the Arabidopsis/Brassica comparative genomics context, it could be applied to comparative browsing relative to other reference genomes. BioViz proved to be an valuable research support tool for Brassica / Arabidopsis comparative genomics. It provided convenient access to the underlying Arabidopsis annotation, allowed the user to view specific EST sequences in the context of the Arabidopsis genome and other related EST sequences. In addition, the limits to which the project pushed the SVG specification proved influential in the SVG community. The work done for BioViz inspired the definition of an opensource project to define standards for SVG based web applications and a standard framework for SVG based widget sets

    Retrieval and Annotation of Music Using Latent Semantic Models

    PhDThis thesis investigates the use of latent semantic models for annotation and retrieval from collections of musical audio tracks. In particular latent semantic analysis (LSA) and aspect models (or probabilistic latent semantic analysis, pLSA) are used to index words in descriptions of music drawn from hundreds of thousands of social tags. A new discrete audio feature representation is introduced to encode musical characteristics of automatically-identified regions of interest within each track, using a vocabulary of audio muswords. Finally a joint aspect model is developed that can learn from both tagged and untagged tracks by indexing both conventional words and muswords. This model is used as the basis of a music search system that supports query by example and by keyword, and of a simple probabilistic machine annotation system.     Location-aware recommendation systems: Where we are and where we recommend to go

    Recommendation systems have been successfully used to provide items of interest to the users (e.g., movies, music, books, news, images). However, traditional recommenda- tion systems do not take into account the location as a relevant factor when providing suggestions. On the other hand, nowadays, there exist an increasing amount of geo- referenced data and users are usually interested only in nearby items (e.g., restaurants, museums, cinemas). Hence, the emergence of location-aware recommendation systems have acquired a great attention by the research community in the last decade. In this paper, we provide a survey of location-aware rec- ommendation systems in mobile computing scenarios. Firstly, we describe briefly the fundamentals of recommendation sys- tems. Then, we introduce some of the most relevant existing approaches for location-aware recommendation. Moreover, we present the main applications of this type of systems in several recommendation scenarios, such as music, news, restaurants, etc. Finally, we discuss new avenues and open issues in the area

The simple technology and genuine intention of the original WWW, which is to help researchers share and exchange information and data across incompatible platforms and systems, have evolved into something larger and beyond what one could conceive. While WWW has reached the critical mass, many limitations are uncovered. To address the limitations, the development of its extension, the Semantic Web, has been underway for more than five years by the inventor of WWW, Tim Berners-Lee, and the technical community. Yet, no significant impact has been made. Its awareness by the public is surprisingly and unfortunately low. This thesis will review the development effort of the Semantic Web, examine its progress which appears lagging compared to WWW, and propose a promising business model to accelerate its adoption path.by Shelley Lau.S.M
