Spanish named entity recognition in the biomedical domain

Named Entity Recognition in the clinical domain and in languages different from English has the difficulty of the absence of complete dictionaries, the informality of texts, the polysemy of terms, the lack of accordance in the boundaries of an entity, the scarcity of corpora and of other resources available. We present a Named Entity Recognition method for poorly resourced languages. Using Element Clustering to Increase the Efficiency of XML Schema Matching

Schema matching attempts to discover semantic mappings between elements of two schemas. Elements are cross compared using various heuristics (e.g., name, data-type, and structure similarity). Seen from a broader perspective, the schema matching problem is a combinatorial problem with an exponential complexity. This makes the naive matching algorithms for large schemas prohibitively inefficient. In this paper we propose a clustering based technique for improving the efficiency of large scale schema matching. The technique inserts clustering as an intermediate step into existing schema matching algorithms. Clustering partitions schemas and reduces the overall matching load, and creates a possibility to trade between the efficiency and effectiveness. The technique can be used in addition to other optimization techniques. In the paper we describe the technique, validate the performance of one implementation of the technique, and open directions for future research

Supporting Work For Low-Income People With Significant Challenges

Welfare programs require people to work, but some low-income adults struggle with major personal challenges that make it hard to find or hold down a job. In this essay, Loprest and Martinson recommend both short term changes to current programs and longer term efforts through a program for competitive federal matching block grants to states. These grants would support efforts to integrate programs that alleviate barriers to work with employment services and to evaluate these initiatives so policymakers can better understand what works

A survey on the use of relevance feedback for information access systems

Users of online search engines often find it difficult to express their need for information in the form of a query. However, if the user can identify examples of the kind of documents they require then they can employ a technique known as relevance feedback. Relevance feedback covers a range of techniques intended to improve a user's query and facilitate retrieval of information relevant to a user's information need. In this paper we survey relevance feedback techniques. We study both automatic techniques, in which the system modifies the user's query, and interactive techniques, in which the user has control over query modification. We also consider specific interfaces to relevance feedback systems and characteristics of searchers that can affect the use and success of relevance feedback systems
