FIFTY YEARS OF MICROPROCESSOR EVOLUTION: FROM SINGLE CPU TO MULTICORE AND MANYCORE SYSTEMS
Nowadays microprocessors are among the most complex electronic systems that man has ever designed. One small silicon chip can contain the complete processor, large memory and logic needed to connect it to the input-output devices. The performance of today's processors implemented on a single chip surpasses the performance of a room-sized supercomputer from just 50 years ago, which cost over $ 10 million [1]. Even the embedded processors found in everyday devices such as mobile phones are far more powerful than computer developers once imagined. The main components of a modern microprocessor are a number of general-purpose cores, a graphics processing unit, a shared cache, memory and input-output interface and a network on a chip to interconnect all these components [2]. The speed of the microprocessor is determined by its clock frequency and cannot exceed a certain limit. Namely, as the frequency increases, the power dissipation increases too, and consequently the amount of heating becomes critical. So, silicon manufacturers decided to design new processor architecture, called multicore processors [3]. With aim to increase performance and efficiency these multiple cores execute multiple instructions simultaneously. In this way, the amount of parallel computing or parallelism is increased [4]. In spite of mentioned advantages, numerous challenges must be addressed carefully when more cores and parallelism are used.This paper presents a review of microprocessor microarchitectures, discussing their generations over the past 50 years. Then, it describes the currently used implementations of the microarchitecture of modern microprocessors, pointing out the specifics of parallel computing in heterogeneous microprocessor systems. To use efficiently the possibility of multi-core technology, software applications must be multithreaded. The program execution must be distributed among the multi-core processors so they can operate simultaneously. To use multi-threading, it is imperative for programmer to understand the basic principles of parallel computing and parallel hardware. Finally, the paper provides details how to implement hardware parallelism in multicore systems

each chip and supports global shared memory across systems of MIND components. MIND is distinguished from other PIM architectures in that it incorporates mechanisms for efficient support of a global parallel execution model based on the semantics of message-driven multithreaded split-transaction processing. MIND is designed to operate either in conjunction with other conventional microprocessors or in standalone arrays of like devices. Parallel Construction of Wavelet Trees on Multicore Architectures
The wavelet tree has become a very useful data structure to efficiently
represent and query large volumes of data in many different domains, from
bioinformatics to geographic information systems. One problem with wavelet
trees is their construction time. In this paper, we introduce two algorithms
that reduce the time complexity of a wavelet tree's construction by taking
advantage of nowadays ubiquitous multicore machines.
Our first algorithm constructs all the levels of the wavelet in parallel in
time and bits of working space, where
is the size of the input sequence and is the size of the alphabet. Our
second algorithm constructs the wavelet tree in a domain-decomposition fashion,
using our first algorithm in each segment, reaching time and
bits of extra space, where is the
number of available cores. Both algorithms are practical and report good

Parallel Implementation of Apriori Algorithm on Multicore System for Retail Market
Data Mining is a process of examining data and revealing the interesting patterns which are hidden. Association Rule Mining is a key technique of data mining. This technique works on finding intriguing relationships. Association rules are generated using Apriori Algorithm. The set of data includes a number of items which are called transactions. The work of this algorithm is to produce frequent itemsets from the transactional databases based upon the minimum support value. The outcome of an Apriori Algorithm is sets of association rules that provide us the frequency of items that are contained in sets of data which provide us the hidden pattern and general trends. This will be helpful for the retailer be familiar with the market and customer’s purchasing behavior. In pursuance of finding more valuable rules, our basic aim is to implement Apriori Algorithm using multithreading approach which can utilization our multicore processing system to improve the performance of an algorithm in a practical and efficient way to unearth more value information for the proper analysis of the business trends
Parallel definition of tear film maps on distributed-memory clusters for the support of dry eye diagnosis
[Abstract] Background and objectives
The analysis of the interference patterns on the tear film lipid layer is a useful clinical test to diagnose dry eye syndrome. This task can be automated with a high degree of accuracy by means of the use of tear film maps. However, the time required by the existing applications to generate them prevents a wider acceptance of this method by medical experts. Multithreading has been previously successfully employed by the authors to accelerate the tear film map definition on multicore single-node machines. In this work, we propose a hybrid message-passing and multithreading parallel approach that further accelerates the generation of tear film maps by exploiting the computational capabilities of distributed-memory systems such as multicore clusters and supercomputers.
Methods
The algorithm for drawing tear film maps is parallelized using Message Passing Interface (MPI) for inter-node communications and the multithreading support available in the C++11 standard for intra-node parallelization. The original algorithm is modified to reduce the communications and increase the scalability.
Results
The hybrid method has been tested on 32 nodes of an Intel cluster (with two 12-core Haswell 2680v3 processors per node) using 50 representative images. Results show that maximum runtime is reduced from almost two minutes using the previous only-multithreaded approach to less than ten seconds using the hybrid method.
Conclusions
The hybrid MPI/multithreaded implementation can be used by medical experts to obtain tear film maps in only a few seconds, which will significantly accelerate and facilitate the diagnosis of the dry eye syndrome.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad; TIN2013-42148-PPortugal.
