Scalable and interpretable product recommendations via overlapping co-clustering
We consider the problem of generating interpretable recommendations by
identifying overlapping co-clusters of clients and products, based only on
positive or implicit feedback. Our approach is applicable on very large
datasets because it exhibits almost linear complexity in the input examples and
the number of co-clusters. We show, both on real industrial data and on
publicly available datasets, that the recommendation accuracy of our algorithm
is competitive to that of state-of-art matrix factorization techniques. In
addition, our technique has the advantage of offering recommendations that are
textually and visually interpretable. Finally, we examine how to implement our

Hybrid Collaborative Filtering with Autoencoders
Collaborative Filtering aims at exploiting the feedback of users to provide
personalised recommendations. Such algorithms look for latent variables in a
large sparse matrix of ratings. They can be enhanced by adding side information
to tackle the well-known cold start problem. While Neu-ral Networks have
tremendous success in image and speech recognition, they have received less
attention in Collaborative Filtering. This is all the more surprising that
Neural Networks are able to discover latent variables in large and
heterogeneous datasets. In this paper, we introduce a Collaborative Filtering
Neural network architecture aka CFN which computes a non-linear Matrix
Factorization from sparse rating inputs and side information. We show
experimentally on the MovieLens and Douban dataset that CFN outper-forms the
state of the art and benefits from side information. We provide an
implementation of the algorithm as a reusable plugin for Torch, a popular
Neural Network framework
Joint Deep Modeling of Users and Items Using Reviews for Recommendation
A large amount of information exists in reviews written by users. This source
of information has been ignored by most of the current recommender systems
while it can potentially alleviate the sparsity problem and improve the quality
of recommendations. In this paper, we present a deep model to learn item
properties and user behaviors jointly from review text. The proposed model,
named Deep Cooperative Neural Networks (DeepCoNN), consists of two parallel
neural networks coupled in the last layers. One of the networks focuses on
learning user behaviors exploiting reviews written by the user, and the other
one learns item properties from the reviews written for the item. A shared
layer is introduced on the top to couple these two networks together. The
shared layer enables latent factors learned for users and items to interact
with each other in a manner similar to factorization machine techniques.
Experimental results demonstrate that DeepCoNN significantly outperforms all
baseline recommender systems on a variety of datasets.Comment: WSDM 201
Fast Differentially Private Matrix Factorization
Differentially private collaborative filtering is a challenging task, both in
terms of accuracy and speed. We present a simple algorithm that is provably
differentially private, while offering good performance, using a novel
connection of differential privacy to Bayesian posterior sampling via
Stochastic Gradient Langevin Dynamics. Due to its simplicity the algorithm
lends itself to efficient implementation. By careful systems design and by
exploiting the power law behavior of the data to maximize CPU cache bandwidth
we are able to generate 1024 dimensional models at a rate of 8.5 million
recommendations per second on a single PC
Latent Relational Metric Learning via Memory-based Attention for Collaborative Ranking
This paper proposes a new neural architecture for collaborative ranking with
implicit feedback. Our model, LRML (\textit{Latent Relational Metric Learning})
is a novel metric learning approach for recommendation. More specifically,
instead of simple push-pull mechanisms between user and item pairs, we propose
to learn latent relations that describe each user item interaction. This helps
to alleviate the potential geometric inflexibility of existing metric learing
approaches. This enables not only better performance but also a greater extent
of modeling capability, allowing our model to scale to a larger number of
interactions. In order to do so, we employ a augmented memory module and learn
to attend over these memory blocks to construct latent relations. The
memory-based attention module is controlled by the user-item interaction,
making the learned relation vector specific to each user-item pair. Hence, this
can be interpreted as learning an exclusive and optimal relational translation
for each user-item interaction. The proposed architecture demonstrates the
state-of-the-art performance across multiple recommendation benchmarks. LRML
outperforms other metric learning models by in terms of Hits@10 and
nDCG@10 on large datasets such as Netflix and MovieLens20M. Moreover,
qualitative studies also demonstrate evidence that our proposed model is able
to infer and encode explicit sentiment, temporal and attribute information
despite being only trained on implicit feedback. As such, this ascertains the
ability of LRML to uncover hidden relational structure within implicit

Personalized Video Recommendation Using Rich Contents from Videos
Video recommendation has become an essential way of helping people explore
the massive videos and discover the ones that may be of interest to them. In
the existing video recommender systems, the models make the recommendations
based on the user-video interactions and single specific content features. When
the specific content features are unavailable, the performance of the existing
models will seriously deteriorate. Inspired by the fact that rich contents
(e.g., text, audio, motion, and so on) exist in videos, in this paper, we
explore how to use these rich contents to overcome the limitations caused by
the unavailability of the specific ones. Specifically, we propose a novel
general framework that incorporates arbitrary single content feature with
user-video interactions, named as collaborative embedding regression (CER)
model, to make effective video recommendation in both in-matrix and
out-of-matrix scenarios. Our extensive experiments on two real-world
large-scale datasets show that CER beats the existing recommender models with
any single content feature and is more time efficient. In addition, we propose
a priority-based late fusion (PRI) method to gain the benefit brought by the
integrating the multiple content features. The corresponding experiment shows
that PRI brings real performance improvement to the baseline and outperforms
the existing fusion methods
