    Enhanced Inter-Cell Interference Coordination Challenges in Heterogeneous Networks

    3GPP LTE-Advanced has started a new study item to investigate Heterogeneous Network (HetNet) deployments as a cost effective way to deal with the unrelenting traffic demand. HetNets consist of a mix of macrocells, remote radio heads, and low-power nodes such as picocells, femtocells, and relays. Leveraging network topology, increasing the proximity between the access network and the end-users, has the potential to provide the next significant performance leap in wireless networks, improving spatial spectrum reuse and enhancing indoor coverage. Nevertheless, deployment of a large number of small cells overlaying the macrocells is not without new technical challenges. In this article, we present the concept of heterogeneous networks and also describe the major technical challenges associated with such network architecture. We focus in particular on the standardization activities within the 3GPP related to enhanced inter-cell interference coordination.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, 2 table

    WiFi-based PCL for monitoring private airfields

    In this article, the potential exploitation of WiFi-based PCL systems is investigated with reference to a real-world civil application in which these sensors are expected to nicely complement the existing technologies adopted for monitoring purposes, especially when operating against noncooperative targets. In particular, we consider the monitoring application of small private airstrips or airfields. With this terminology, we refer to open areas designated for the takeoff and landing of small aircrafts that, unlike an airport, have generally short and possibly unpaved runways (e.g., grass, dirt, sand, or gravel surfaces) and do not necessarily have terminals. More important, such areas usually are devoid of conventional technologies, equipment, or procedures adopted to guarantee safety and security in large aerodromes.There exist a huge number of small, privately owned, and unlicensed airfields around the world. Private aircraft owners mainly use these “airports” for recreational, single-person, or private flights for small groups and training flight purposes. In addition, residential airparks have proliferated in recent years, especially inthe United States, Canada, and South Africa. A residential airpark, or “fly-in community,” features common airstrips where homes with attached hangars allow owners to taxi from their hangar to a shared runway. In many cases, roads are dual use for both cars and planes.In such scenarios, the possibility to employ low-cost, compact, nonintrusive, and nontransmitting sensors as a way to improve safety and security with limited impact on the airstrips' users would be of great potential interest. To this purpose, WiFi-based passive radar sensors appear to be good candidates [23]. Therefore, we investigate their application against typical operative conditions experienced in the scenarios described earlier.     D2D-based Cooperative Positioning Paradigm for Future Wireless Systems: A Survey

    Emerging communication network applications require a location accuracy of less than 1m in more than 95% of the service area. For this purpose, 5G New Radio (NR) technology is designed to facilitate high-accuracy continuous localization. In 5G systems, the existence of high-density small cells and the possibility of the device-to-device (D2D) communication between mobile terminals paves the way for cooperative positioning applications. From the standardization perspective, D2D technology is already under consideration (5G NR Release 16) for ultra-dense networks enabling cooperative positioning and is expected to achieve the ubiquitous positioning of below one-meter accuracy, thereby fulfilling the 5G requirements. In this survey, the strengths and weaknesses of D2D as an enabling technology for cooperative cellular positioning are analyzed (including two D2D approaches to perform cooperative positioning); lessons learned and open issues are highlighted to serve as guidelines for future research
