    THE ROLE OF COMPUTER AIDED ENGINEERING IN DEVELOPING A COMBINED TRASH AND RECYCLING TRUCK : A CASE STUDY

    This work will illustrate how Environmental America Inc., EAI, and the Clemson University design team utilized lean manufacturing principles to revolutionize the curbside waste collection process. Through the application of lean manufacturing principles the number of non-value added steps was significantly reduced and the information gathered from the lean process tree acted as a framework to develop initial constraints and criteria for the vehicle\u27s development. The design team was asked to construct the fifth iteration of the prototype collection vehicle in an effort to minimize vehicle cost, size and weight. An extensive case study will be presented which illustrates how the design team utilized CAE to optimize the proposed prototype baling system. The investigation is conducted through the use of an \u27observer as participant\u27 form of case study. The EAI combined collection vehicle was selected as the focus of the study due to the complexity and size of the system, as it has a significantly larger scope than those presented in classic academic engineering design projects. Since previous prototypes have been developed without the use of CAE software or additional engineering tool support, a benchmark for comparison exists which will directly demonstrate the benefits and limitations of the chosen software. Currently, CAE and FEA software is often used for product validation, system optimization, and parametric studies, however, this paper will demonstrate how CAE and FEA can be utilized to verify physical experimentation. The results of this case study will show that although the use of CAE significantly reduces lead time and cost associated with product development, the software can be extremely hazardous when used inappropriately

    An Electronic Health Record (EHR) is designed to store diverse data accurately from a range of health care providers and to capture the status of a patient by a range of health care providers across time. Realising the numerous benefits of the system, EHR adoption is growing globally and many countries invest heavily in electronic health systems. In Australia, the Government invested $467 million to build key components of the Personally Controlled Electronic Health Record (PCEHR) system in July 2012. However, in the last three years, the uptake from individuals and health care providers has not been satisfactory. Unauthorised access of the PCEHR was one of the major barriers. We propose an improved access control model for the PCEHR system to resolve the unauthorised access issue. We discuss the unauthorised access issue with real examples and present a potential solution to overcome the issue to make the PCEHR system a success in Australia

    The intralogistic activities of the logistics operators are defined in the grouping of all the processes linked to the reception, storage and distribution of raw materials and final products. Therefore, the study of intralogistic processes as an activity is part of the value chain of a company and, through its management, the result of the operation and an adequate level of customer service will depend on it. The project proposes to evaluate the feasibility of the use of technologies of the industry 4.0 in the intralogistic activities that allow the integration of processes of automation and control for the continuous improvement of the decision making in the processes of storage, load and unload of the logistic operators of the department of the Atlantic - Colombia for the improvement of the enterprise efficiency.     Re-Engineering a Trash/Recycling Collection Vehicle Based on Challenging Customer Requirements

    Engineering design starts with the definition of design requirements. These requirements define the design problem and must be satisfied for a solution to be acceptable. While many design methodologies exist for defining design requirements, none presently provides a systematic approach for designers to challenge requirements. Yet, Pahl and Beitz, Hazelrigg, and Suh all argue that a designer should continually question the need for each requirement and refine them as the product evolves. Thus, there exists a need to develop a comprehensive method that enables a designer to verify, review/question, and revise requirements throughout the design process. This research uses the design of a combined trash and recycling collection vehicle for Environmental America Inc. (EAI) as a case study to illustrate the positive impact of challenging customer requirements, offer examples of why requirements should be challenged, and describe the successful process used. Two unique design concepts are compared and the catalyst for challenging requirements is created when the seemingly superior concept does not satisfy one of the design requirements. The process of challenging requirements results in the development of three guiding principles. Three concepts, physical testing, defining more customers and refining their needs, and tracing a requirement to its original design decision, form the basis for the development of a systematic design method. Ultimately, this thesis provides the foundation for the development of a formal design method to challenge requirements that can be adopted to different types of design problems and accepted by both academia and industry

    Business Case and Technology Analysis for 5G Low Latency Applications

    A large number of new consumer and industrial applications are likely to change the classic operator's business models and provide a wide range of new markets to enter. This article analyses the most relevant 5G use cases that require ultra-low latency, from both technical and business perspectives. Low latency services pose challenging requirements to the network, and to fulfill them operators need to invest in costly changes in their network. In this sense, it is not clear whether such investments are going to be amortized with these new business models. In light of this, specific applications and requirements are described and the potential market benefits for operators are analysed. Conclusions show that operators have clear opportunities to add value and position themselves strongly with the increasing number of services to be provided by 5G.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figure

    Mobile Robot Vision Image Feature Recognition Method Based on Machine Vision

    In order to improve the efficiency and accuracy of mobile robot visual image feature recognition, a mobile robot visual image feature recognition method based on machine vision is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the development of mobile robot vision is analyzed, and the specific functions of robot visual feature recognition method are designed; Then, the Fourier series method is used to collect the mobile robot visual image, and the matrix associated with the autocorrelation function is calculated according to the Harris algorithm to complete the edge feature extraction of the mobile robot visual image; SIFT feature points of mobile robot visual image are classified, and mobile robot visual image feature recognition is realized through machine vision. The experimental results show that when the number of images is 600, the accuracy of image feature recognition and the loss value of image edge feature extraction of this method are 96.98% and 6.38%, respectively, and the number of iterations is 500. The time of visual image feature recognition of this method is only 3 minutes; The method has the lowest error mean and error variance under different noise conditions. This method can effectively improve the efficiency and accuracy of image feature recognition

    Coopetitive business models in future mobile broadband with licensed shared access (LSA)

    6siopenSpectrum scarcity forces mobile network operators (MNOs) providing mobile broadband services to develop new business models that address spectrum sharing. It engages MNOs into coopetitive relationship with incumbents. Licensed Shared Access (LSA) concept complements traditional licensing and helps MNOs to access new spectrum bands on a shared basis. This paper discusses spectrum sharing with LSA from business perspective. It describes how coopetition and business model are linked conceptually, and identifies the influence of coopetition on future business models in LSA. We develop business models for dominant and challenger MNOs in traditional licensing and future with LSA. The results indicate that coopetition and business model concepts are linked via value co-creation and value co-capture. LSA offers different business opportunities to dominant and challenger MNOs.     Hybrid order picking : A simulation model of a joint manual and autonomous order picking system

    Order picking is a key process in supply chains and a determinant of business success in many industries. Order picking is still performed manually by human operators in most companies; however, there are also increasingly more technologies available to automate order picking processes or to support human order pickers. One concept that has not attracted much research attention so far is hybrid order picking where autonomous robots and human order pickers work together in warehouses within a shared workspace for a joint target. This study presents a simulation model that considers various system characteristics and parameters of hybrid order picking systems, such as picker blocking, to evaluate the performance of such systems. Our results show that hybrid order picking is generally capable of improving pure manual or automated order picking operations in terms of throughput and total costs. Based on the simulation results, promising future research potentials are discussed

    A Collaborative Commerce Framework for the Real Estate Industry

    The Internet opens up new business opportunities for the real estate industry. It provides real estate companies with new ways to collaborate with service providers, gain customer and market information, and communicate with the customer in new ways to turn the industry into a customer-centric driven modus operandi. It also makes the real-estate market more transparent, and hence more efficient. This, in turn, will create downward pressure on existing commission fees, create multiple revenue channels, and redefine the role of the agent as an intermediary. A collaborative commerce-model framework is developed and illustrated to act as an enabler for turning these opportunities into a future reality.
