    CHORUS Deliverable 2.2: Second report - identification of multi-disciplinary key issues for gap analysis toward EU multimedia search engines roadmap

    After addressing the state-of-the-art during the first year of Chorus and establishing the existing landscape in multimedia search engines, we have identified and analyzed gaps within European research effort during our second year. In this period we focused on three directions, notably technological issues, user-centred issues and use-cases and socio- economic and legal aspects. These were assessed by two central studies: firstly, a concerted vision of functional breakdown of generic multimedia search engine, and secondly, a representative use-cases descriptions with the related discussion on requirement for technological challenges. Both studies have been carried out in cooperation and consultation with the community at large through EC concertation meetings (multimedia search engines cluster), several meetings with our Think-Tank, presentations in international conferences, and surveys addressed to EU projects coordinators as well as National initiatives coordinators. Based on the obtained feedback we identified two types of gaps, namely core technological gaps that involve research challenges, and “enablers”, which are not necessarily technical research challenges, but have impact on innovation progress. New socio-economic trends are presented as well as emerging legal challenges

    A cost-efficient QoS-aware analytical model of future software content delivery networks

    Freelance, part-time, work-at-home, and other flexible jobs are changing the concept of workplace, and bringing information and content exchange problems to companies. Geographically spread corporations may use remote distribution of software and data to attend employees' demands, by exploiting emerging delivery technologies. In this context, cost-efficient software distribution is crucial to allow business evolution and make IT infrastructures more agile. On the other hand, container based virtualization technology is shaping the new trends of software deployment and infrastructure design. We envision current and future enterprise IT management trends evolving towards container based software delivery over Hybrid CDNs. This paper presents a novel cost-efficient QoS aware analytical model and a Hybrid CDN-P2P architecture for enterprise software distribution. The model would allow delivery cost minimization for a wide range of companies, from big multinationals to SMEs, using CDN-P2P distribution under various industrial hypothetical scenarios. Model constraints guarantee acceptable deployment times and keep interchanged content amounts below the bandwidth and storage network limits in our scenarios. Indeed, key model parameters account for network bandwidth, storage limits and rental prices, which are empirically determined from their offered values by the commercial delivery networks KeyCDN, MaxCDN, CDN77 and BunnyCDN. This preliminary study indicates that MaxCDN offers the best cost-QoS trade-off. The model is implemented in the network simulation tool PeerSim, and then applied to diverse testing scenarios by varying company types, number and profile (either, technical or administrative) of employees and the number and size of content requests. Hybrid simulation results show overall economic savings between 5\% and 20\%, compared to just hiring resources from a commercial CDN, while guaranteeing satisfactory QoS levels in terms of deployment times and number of served requests.This work was partially supported by Generalitat de Catalunya under the SGR Program (2017-SGR-962) and the RIS3CAT DRAC Project (001-P-001723).     DEEM: Enabling microservices via DEvice edge markets

    Native applications running over handheld devices have an irreplaceable role in users' daily activities. That said, recent studies show that users download on average zero new applications on monthly basis, which suggests that new apps can face discoverability issues. In this work, we aim for a web-based, download/installation-free access to native application features through microservices (ÎĽ Services)that are shared between user devices in a peer-to-peer (P2P)manner. Such a P2P approach is self-scalable and requires no investment for ÎĽ Service deployment, unlike mobile edge computing or Data Centre. We introduce DEEM, a DEvice Edge Market design that enables device-hosted ÎĽServices to end-users. In DEEM, ÎĽ Service-based markets act as rendezvous points between available ÎĽ Service instances and clients. DEEM ensures the i) assignment of instances to the users that value them the most, in terms of QoS gain, and ii) devices' income maximisation. Blockchain technology (BCT) was identified as potentially providing the mining industry with a trusted system for securely exchanging digital value. However, there is little evidence or understanding of how/where BCT can be implemented and what benefits the industry could obtain. This research study provides a fundamental understanding of what the technology is in order to identify the associated capabilities and potential application benefits for the mining industry. From a technology push perspective, blockchain capabilities are used to evaluate how the technology’s value drivers map to the mining industries core value chain processes.     Elastic Business Process Management: State of the Art and Open Challenges for BPM in the Cloud

    With the advent of cloud computing, organizations are nowadays able to react rapidly to changing demands for computational resources. Not only individual applications can be hosted on virtual cloud infrastructures, but also complete business processes. This allows the realization of so-called elastic processes, i.e., processes which are carried out using elastic cloud resources. Despite the manifold benefits of elastic processes, there is still a lack of solutions supporting them. In this paper, we identify the state of the art of elastic Business Process Management with a focus on infrastructural challenges. We conceptualize an architecture for an elastic Business Process Management System and discuss existing work on scheduling, resource allocation, monitoring, decentralized coordination, and state management for elastic processes. Furthermore, we present two representative elastic Business Process Management Systems which are intended to counter these challenges. Based on our findings, we identify open issues and outline possible research directions for the realization of elastic processes and elastic Business Process Management.Comment: Please cite as: S.     Cooperation Between Stations in Wireless Networks

    In a wireless network, mobile nodes (MNs) repeatedly perform tasks such as layer 2 (L2) handoff, layer 3 (L3) handoff and authentication. These tasks are critical, particularly for real-time applications such as VoIP. We propose a novel approach, namely Cooperative Roaming (CR), in which MNs can collaborate with each other and share useful information about the network in which they move. We show how we can achieve seamless L2 and L3 handoffs regardless of the authentication mechanism used and without any changes to either the infrastructure or the protocol. In particular, we provide a working implementation of CR and show how, with CR, MNs can achieve a total L2+L3 handoff time of less than 16 ms in an open network and of about 21 ms in an IEEE 802.11i network. We consider behaviors typical of IEEE 802.11 networks, although many of the concepts and problems addressed here apply to any kind of mobile network
