    SYNTHESIZING DYSARTHRIC SPEECH USING MULTI-SPEAKER TTS FOR DSYARTHRIC SPEECH RECOGNITION

    Dysarthria is a motor speech disorder often characterized by reduced speech intelligibility through slow, uncoordinated control of speech production muscles. Automatic Speech recognition (ASR) systems may help dysarthric talkers communicate more effectively. However, robust dysarthria-specific ASR requires a significant amount of training speech is required, which is not readily available for dysarthric talkers. In this dissertation, we investigate dysarthric speech augmentation and synthesis methods. To better understand differences in prosodic and acoustic characteristics of dysarthric spontaneous speech at varying severity levels, a comparative study between typical and dysarthric speech was conducted. These characteristics are important components for dysarthric speech modeling, synthesis, and augmentation. For augmentation, prosodic transformation and time-feature masking have been proposed. For dysarthric speech synthesis, this dissertation has introduced a modified neural multi-talker TTS by adding a dysarthria severity level coefficient and a pause insertion model to synthesize dysarthric speech for varying severity levels. In addition, we have extended this work by using a label propagation technique to create more meaningful control variables such as a continuous Respiration, Laryngeal and Tongue (RLT) parameter, even for datasets that only provide discrete dysarthria severity level information. This approach increases the controllability of the system, so we are able to generate more dysarthric speech with a broader range. To evaluate their effectiveness for synthesis of training data, dysarthria-specific speech recognition was used. Results show that a DNN-HMM model trained on additional synthetic dysarthric speech achieves WER improvement of 12.2% compared to the baseline, and that the addition of the severity level and pause insertion controls decrease WER by 6.5%, showing the effectiveness of adding these parameters. Overall results on the TORGO database demonstrate that using dysarthric synthetic speech to increase the amount of dysarthric-patterned speech for training has a significant impact on the dysarthric ASR systems

    Weakly-supervised forced alignment of disfluent speech using phoneme-level modeling

    The study of speech disorders can benefit greatly from time-aligned data. However, audio-text mismatches in disfluent speech cause rapid performance degradation for modern speech aligners, hindering the use of automatic approaches. In this work, we propose a simple and effective modification of alignment graph construction of CTC-based models using Weighted Finite State Transducers. The proposed weakly-supervised approach alleviates the need for verbatim transcription of speech disfluencies for forced alignment. During the graph construction, we allow the modeling of common speech disfluencies, i.e. repetitions and omissions. Further, we show that by assessing the degree of audio-text mismatch through the use of Oracle Error Rate, our method can be effectively used in the wild. Our evaluation on a corrupted version of the TIMIT test set and the UCLASS dataset shows significant improvements, particularly for recall, achieving a 23-25% relative improvement over our baselines.Comment: Interspeech 202

    Acoustic-phonetic decoding for speech intelligibility evaluation in the context of Head and Neck Cancers

    International audienceIn addition to health problems, Head and Neck Cancers (HNC) can cause serious speech disorders that can lead to partial or complete loss of speech intel-ligibility in some patients. The clinician's evaluation of the intelligibility level before or after surgical treatment and / or during the rehabilitation phase is an important part of the clinical assessment. Perceptive assessment is the most widely used method in clinical practice to assess the level of intelligibility of a patient despite the limitations associated with it such as subjectivity and moderate reproducibility. In this paper, we propose to overcome these limitations by associating a specific task of speech production based on pseudo-words with an automatic speech processing system, both oriented towards acoustic-phonetic decoding. Compared to human perception, the automatic system reaches very high correlation rates and promising results when applied to a French speech corpus including 41 healthy speakers and 85 patients suffering from HNC

    A computational model of the relationship between speech intelligibility and speech acoustics

    abstract: Speech intelligibility measures how much a speaker can be understood by a listener. Traditional measures of intelligibility, such as word accuracy, are not sufficient to reveal the reasons of intelligibility degradation. This dissertation investigates the underlying sources of intelligibility degradations from both perspectives of the speaker and the listener. Segmental phoneme errors and suprasegmental lexical boundary errors are developed to reveal the perceptual strategies of the listener. A comprehensive set of automated acoustic measures are developed to quantify variations in the acoustic signal from three perceptual aspects, including articulation, prosody, and vocal quality. The developed measures have been validated on a dysarthric speech dataset with various severity degrees. Multiple regression analysis is employed to show the developed measures could predict perceptual ratings reliably. The relationship between the acoustic measures and the listening errors is investigated to show the interaction between speech production and perception. The hypothesize is that the segmental phoneme errors are mainly caused by the imprecise articulation, while the sprasegmental lexical boundary errors are due to the unreliable phonemic information as well as the abnormal rhythm and prosody patterns. To test the hypothesis, within-speaker variations are simulated in different speaking modes. Significant changes have been detected in both the acoustic signals and the listening errors. Results of the regression analysis support the hypothesis by showing that changes in the articulation-related acoustic features are important in predicting changes in listening phoneme errors, while changes in both of the articulation- and prosody-related features are important in predicting changes in lexical boundary errors. Moreover, significant correlation has been achieved in the cross-validation experiment, which indicates that it is possible to predict intelligibility variations from acoustic signal.Dissertation/ThesisDoctoral Dissertation Speech and Hearing Science 201

    Dysarthric Speech Recognition and Offline Handwriting Recognition using Deep Neural Networks

    Millions of people around the world are diagnosed with neurological disorders like Parkinson’s, Cerebral Palsy or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Due to the neurological damage as the disease progresses, the person suffering from the disease loses control of muscles, along with speech deterioration. Speech deterioration is due to neuro motor condition that limits manipulation of the articulators of the vocal tract, the condition collectively called as dysarthria. Even though dysarthric speech is grammatically and syntactically correct, it is difficult for humans to understand and for Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems to decipher. With the emergence of deep learning, speech recognition systems have improved a lot compared to traditional speech recognition systems, which use sophisticated preprocessing techniques to extract speech features. In this digital era there are still many documents that are handwritten many of which need to be digitized. Offline handwriting recognition involves recognizing handwritten characters from images of handwritten text (i.e. scanned documents). This is an interesting task as it involves sequence learning with computer vision. The task is more difficult than Optical Character Recognition (OCR), because handwritten letters can be written in virtually infinite different styles. This thesis proposes exploiting deep learning techniques like Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN) for offline handwriting recognition. For speech recognition, we compare traditional methods for speech recognition with recent deep learning methods. Also, we apply speaker adaptation methods both at feature level and at parameter level to improve recognition of dysarthric speech

    Towards Automatic Speech-Language Assessment for Aphasia Rehabilitation

    Speech-based technology has the potential to reinforce traditional aphasia therapy through the development of automatic speech-language assessment systems. Such systems can provide clinicians with supplementary information to assist with progress monitoring and treatment planning, and can provide support for on-demand auxiliary treatment. However, current technology cannot support this type of application due to the difficulties associated with aphasic speech processing. The focus of this dissertation is on the development of computational methods that can accurately assess aphasic speech across a range of clinically-relevant dimensions. The first part of the dissertation focuses on novel techniques for assessing aphasic speech intelligibility in constrained contexts. The second part investigates acoustic modeling methods that lead to significant improvement in aphasic speech recognition and allow the system to work with unconstrained speech samples. The final part demonstrates the efficacy of speech recognition-based analysis in automatic paraphasia detection, extraction of clinically-motivated quantitative measures, and estimation of aphasia severity. The methods and results presented in this work will enable robust technologies for accurately recognizing and assessing aphasic speech, and will provide insights into the link between computational methods and clinical understanding of aphasia.PHDComputer Science & EngineeringUniversity of Michigan, Horace H.     Confusion modelling for lip-reading

    Lip-reading is mostly used as a means of communication by people with hearing di�fficulties. Recent work has explored the automation of this process, with the aim of building a speech recognition system entirely driven by lip movements. However, this work has so far produced poor results because of factors such as high variability of speaker features, diffi�culties in mapping from visual features to speech sounds, and high co-articulation of visual features. The motivation for the work in this thesis is inspired by previous work in dysarthric speech recognition [Morales, 2009]. Dysathric speakers have poor control over their articulators, often leading to a reduced phonemic repertoire. The premise of this thesis is that recognition of the visual speech signal is a similar problem to recog- nition of dysarthric speech, in that some information about the speech signal has been lost in both cases, and this brings about a systematic pattern of errors in the decoded output. This work attempts to exploit the systematic nature of these errors by modelling them in the framework of a weighted finite-state transducer cascade. Results indicate that the technique can achieve slightly lower error rates than the conventional approach. In addition, it explores some interesting more general questions for automated lip-reading

    A cross-lingual adaptation approach for rapid development of speech recognizers for learning disabled users

    Building a voice-operated system for learning disabled users is a difficult task that requires a considerable amount of time and effort. Due to the wide spectrum of disabilities and their different related phonopathies, most approaches available are targeted to a specific pathology. This may improve their accuracy for some users, but makes them unsuitable for others. In this paper, we present a cross-lingual approach to adapt a general-purpose modular speech recognizer for learning disabled people. The main advantage of this approach is that it allows rapid and cost-effective development by taking the already built speech recognition engine and its modules, and utilizing existing resources for standard speech in different languages for the recognition of the users’ atypical voices.     Automatic transcription and phonetic labelling of dyslexic children's reading in Bahasa Melayu

    Automatic speech recognition (ASR) is potentially helpful for children who suffer from dyslexia. Highly phonetically similar errors of dyslexic children‟s reading affect the accuracy of ASR. Thus, this study aims to evaluate acceptable accuracy of ASR using automatic transcription and phonetic labelling of dyslexic children‟s reading in BM. For that, three objectives have been set: first to produce manual transcription and phonetic labelling; second to construct automatic transcription and phonetic labelling using forced alignment; and third to compare between accuracy using automatic transcription and phonetic labelling and manual transcription and phonetic labelling. Therefore, to accomplish these goals methods have been used including manual speech labelling and segmentation, forced alignment, Hidden Markov Model (HMM) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) for training, and for measure accuracy of ASR, Word Error Rate (WER) and False Alarm Rate (FAR) were used. A number of 585 speech files are used for manual transcription, forced alignment and training experiment. The recognition ASR engine using automatic transcription and phonetic labelling obtained optimum results is 76.04% with WER as low as 23.96% and FAR is 17.9%. These results are almost similar with ASR engine using manual transcription namely 76.26%, WER as low as 23.97% and FAR a 17.9%.
