Software Measurement Activities in Small and Medium Enterprises: an Empirical Assessment

    Get PDF
An empirical study for evaluating the proper implementation of measurement/metric programs in software companies in one area of Turkey is presented. The research questions are discussed and validated with the help of senior software managers (more than 15 years’ experience) and then used for interviewing a variety of medium and small scale software companies in Ankara. Observations show that there is a common reluctance/lack of interest in utilizing measurements/metrics despite the fact that they are well known in the industry. A side product of this research is that internationally recognized standards such as ISO and CMMI are pursued if they are a part of project/job requirements; without these requirements, introducing those standards to the companies remains as a long-term target to increase quality

Performance and Power Analysis of HPC Workloads on Heterogenous Multi-Node Clusters

Performance analysis tools allow application developers to identify and characterize the inefficiencies that cause performance degradation in their codes, allowing for application optimizations. Due to the increasing interest in the High Performance Computing (HPC) community towards energy-efficiency issues, it is of paramount importance to be able to correlate performance and power figures within the same profiling and analysis tools. For this reason, we present a performance and energy-efficiency study aimed at demonstrating how a single tool can be used to collect most of the relevant metrics. In particular, we show how the same analysis techniques can be applicable on different architectures, analyzing the same HPC application on a high-end and a low-power cluster. The former cluster embeds Intel Haswell CPUs and NVIDIA K80 GPUs, while the latter is made up of NVIDIA Jetson TX1 boards, each hosting an Arm Cortex-A57 CPU and an NVIDIA Tegra X1 Maxwell GPU.The research leading to these results has received funding from the European Community’s Seventh Framework Programme [FP7/2007-2013] and Horizon 2020 under the Mont-Blanc projects [17], grant agreements n. 288777, 610402 and 671697. E.C. was partially founded by “Contributo 5 per mille assegnato all’Università degli Studi di Ferrara-dichiarazione dei redditi dell’anno 2014”. We thank the University of Ferrara and INFN Ferrara for the access to the COKA Cluster. We warmly thank the BSC tools group, supporting us for the smooth integration and test of our setup within Extrae and Paraver.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

A DISCUSSION ON ASSURING SOFTWARE QUALITY IN SMALL AND MEDIUM SOFTWARE ENTERPRISES: AN EMPIRICAL INVESTIGATION

    Get PDF
Under the studies of general core activities including software inspection, review and testing to achieve quality objectives in small-medium size enterprises (SMEs), the paper presents a contemporary view of such companies against quality measures. The results from a local empirical investigation of quality standards in the Turkish software industry are reported.Around 150 software companies have been approached from which 17 detailed feedback inform that in order to ensure software quality, standards including internationally recognized International Standards Organization (ISO) and Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) are given credit. However the substantial workload and resources required to obtain them are also reported as serious; downscaled frameworks of such large models proposed in the literature are not well known by the SMEs either. The paper also discusses "work around" that bypasses such standards to ease delivery of products while keeping certificates as labels just to acquire new jobs for the business

Quality pressure is one of the factors affecting processes for software development in its various stages. DevOps is one of the proposed solutions to such pressure. The primary focus of DevOps is to increase the deployment speed, frequency and quality. DevOps is a mixture of different developments and operations to its multitudinous ramifications in software development industries, DevOps have attracted the interest of many researchers. There are considerable literature surveys on this critical innovation in software development, yet, little attention has been given to DevOps impact on software quality. This research is aimed at analyzing the implications of DevOps features on software quality. DevOps can also be referred to a change in organization cultures aimed at removal of gaps between the development and operations of an organization. The adoption of DevOps in an organization provides many benefits including quality but also brings challenges to an organization. This study presents systematic mapping of the impact of DevOps on software quality. The results of this study provide a better understanding of DevOps on software quality for both professionals and researchers working in this area. The study shows research was mainly focused in automation, culture, continuous delivery, fast feedback of DevOps. There is need of further research in many areas of DevOps (for instance: measurement, development of metrics of different stages to assess its performance, culture, practices toward ensuring quality assurance, and quality factors such as usability, efficiency, software maintainability and portability). Validation of an Innovation Mining Framework

    Get PDF
The driving hypothesis of this thesis is that a quantitative approach linking business objectives of an organization with technological limitations of the physical product would enable industry to create more innovative products. The main goal of this research is to validate the applicability and reliability of the innovation mining framework developed by Peyyeti (2016) to identify innovation opportunities and components worth innovating in a product. In this work, the innovation mining framework is applied with minor modifications to a mechanical pencil, innovation scenarios were then compared to existing innovations in mechanical pencils. Based on the success of the feasibility trial, the innovation mining framework was applied to a Dirt-Devil vacuum and compared to innovations implemented in the Dyson-V6 vacuum to improve a set of chosen value-metrics. Based on this study, the following insights were developed: (1) The model sufficiently identified several innovation opportunities to improve each value-metric (2) Varying weighting schemes do not have significant effects on filtered data (3) The top-half of the dendrogram contains the most relevant clusters that present viable innovation opportunities (4) The relevant clusters must be viewed from a systems thinking perspective as a single chain that must be innovated for the most benefit (5) Implementing this model provokes systems thinking approach in the user. This gives a substantial advantage over intuitive and qualitative approaches by providing insights on hidden relationships and identifying innovation opportunities in a system that may otherwise be ignored or unexplored. Opportunities for future-work include developing a transfer-function system representing true relationships, performing SVD at every level of the coupling matrices to gain insights into the nature of transformation and cluster formation, comparing clusters obtained to failure-modes associated with the corresponding value-metric for systematic prioritization and comparing dendrogram clusters with function-structure map to get detailed insights on clusters and their interactions

Software product quality metrics : a systematic mapping study

    Get PDF
In the current competitive world, producing quality products has become a prominent factor to succeed in business. In this respect, defining and following the software product quality metrics (SPQM) to detect the current quality situation and continuous improvement of systems have gained tremendous importance. Therefore, it is necessary to review the present studies in this area to allow for the analysis of the situation at hand, as well as to enable us to make predictions regarding the future research areas. The present research aims to analyze the active research areas and trends on this topic appearing in the literature during the last decade. A Systematic Mapping (SM) study was carried out on 70 articles and conference papers published between 2009 and 2019 on SPQM as indicated in their titles and abstract. The result is presented through graphics, explanations, and the mind mapping method. The outputs include the trend map between the years 2009 and 2019, knowledge about this area and measurement tools, issues determined to be open to development in this area, and conformity between conference papers, articles and internationally valid quality models. This study may serve as a foundation for future studies that aim to contribute to the development in this crucial field. Future SM studies might focus on this subject for measuring the quality of network performance and new technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of things (IoT), Cloud of Things (CoT), Machine Learning, and Robotics.publishedVersio

    Get PDF
Abstract. Embedded operating systems for Internet of Things are responsible for managing hardware and software in these systems. From the vast number of IoT operating system projects available, some projects are backed by large companies or institutes and some are developed completely by the open source community. IoT operating system testing focuses on the key features of IoT such as networking and limited resources. In this thesis, problems in Mbed OS operating system testing methods are identified and a unit testing solution is implemented. The implemented unit testing framework allows developers to write and run unit tests. The framework is also integrated into Mbed OS continuous integration to increase test coverage. This thesis shows how functional testing and unit testing are the most common types of testing in open source embedded operating system projects. Mbed OS unit testing framework results shows how running tests on PC platforms is faster than running tests on IoT devices. This framework also enables developers to write unit tests more freely and improve Mbed OS development process. The implemented unit testing framework solved issues in Mbed OS testing but more in depth research is needed to improve testing methods further.
