Towards Vision-Based Smart Hospitals: A System for Tracking and Monitoring Hand Hygiene Compliance
One in twenty-five patients admitted to a hospital will suffer from a
hospital acquired infection. If we can intelligently track healthcare staff,
patients, and visitors, we can better understand the sources of such
infections. We envision a smart hospital capable of increasing operational
efficiency and improving patient care with less spending. In this paper, we
propose a non-intrusive vision-based system for tracking people's activity in
hospitals. We evaluate our method for the problem of measuring hand hygiene
compliance. Empirically, our method outperforms existing solutions such as
proximity-based techniques and covert in-person observational studies. We
present intuitive, qualitative results that analyze human movement patterns and
conduct spatial analytics which convey our method's interpretability. This work
is a step towards a computer-vision based smart hospital and demonstrates
promising results for reducing hospital acquired infections.Comment: Machine Learning for Healthcare Conference (MLHC
DeepSignals: Predicting Intent of Drivers Through Visual Signals
Detecting the intention of drivers is an essential task in self-driving,
necessary to anticipate sudden events like lane changes and stops. Turn signals
and emergency flashers communicate such intentions, providing seconds of
potentially critical reaction time. In this paper, we propose to detect these
signals in video sequences by using a deep neural network that reasons about
both spatial and temporal information. Our experiments on more than a million
frames show high per-frame accuracy in very challenging scenarios.Comment: To be presented at the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and

Forward Vehicle Collision Warning Based on Quick Camera Calibration
Forward Vehicle Collision Warning (FCW) is one of the most important
functions for autonomous vehicles. In this procedure, vehicle detection and
distance measurement are core components, requiring accurate localization and
estimation. In this paper, we propose a simple but efficient forward vehicle
collision warning framework by aggregating monocular distance measurement and
precise vehicle detection. In order to obtain forward vehicle distance, a quick
camera calibration method which only needs three physical points to calibrate
related camera parameters is utilized. As for the forward vehicle detection, a
multi-scale detection algorithm that regards the result of calibration as
distance priori is proposed to improve the precision. Intensive experiments are
conducted in our established real scene dataset and the results have
demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed framework
The DRIVE-SAFE project: signal processing and advanced information technologies for improving driving prudence and accidents
In this paper, we will talk about the Drivesafe project whose aim is creating conditions for prudent driving on highways and roadways with the purposes of reducing accidents caused by driver behavior. To achieve these primary goals, critical data is being collected from multimodal sensors (such as cameras, microphones, and other sensors) to build a unique databank on driver behavior. We are developing system and technologies for analyzing the data and automatically determining potentially dangerous situations (such as driver fatigue, distraction, etc.). Based on the findings from these studies, we will propose systems for warning the drivers and taking other precautionary measures to avoid accidents once a dangerous situation is detected. In order to address these issues a national consortium has been formed including Automotive Research Center (OTAM), Koç University, Istanbul Technical University, Sabancı University, Ford A.S., Renault A.S., and Fiat A.
