    Get PDF
Nowadays, there are several low cost GPS receivers able to provide both pseudorange and carrier phase measurements in the L1band, that allow to have good realtime performances in outdoor condition. The present paper describes a set of dedicated tests in order to evaluate the positioning accuracy in static conditions. The quality of the pseudorange and the carrier phase measurements let hope for interesting results. The use of such kind of receiver could be extended to a large number of professional applications, like engineering fields: survey, georeferencing, monitoring, cadastral mapping and cadastral road. In this work, the receivers performance is verified considering a single frequency solution trying to fix the phase ambiguity, when possible. Different solutions are defined: code, float and fix solutions. In order to solve the phase ambiguities different methods are considered. Each test performed is statistically analyzed, highlighting the effects of different factors on precision and accurac

Bluetooth 5.0 Suitability Assessment for Emergency Response within Fire Environments

Natural disasters, such as wildfires, can cause widespread devastation. Future-proofing infrastructure, such as buildings and bridges, through technological advancements is crucial to minimize their impact. Fires in disasters often stem from damaged fuel lines and electrical equipment, such as the 2018 California wildfire caused by a power line fault. To enhance safety, IoT applications can continuously monitor the health of emergency personnel. Using Bluetooth 5.0 and wearables in mesh networks, these apps can alert others about an individual’s location during emergencies. However, fire can disrupt wireless networks. This study assesses Bluetooth 5.0’s performance in transmitting signals in fire conditions. It examined received signal strength indicator (RSSI) values in a front open-fire chamber using both Peer-to-Peer (P2P) and mesh networks. The experiment considered three transmission heights of 0.61, 1.22, and 1.83 m and two distances of 11.13 m and 1.52 m. The study demonstrated successful signal transmission with a maximum loss of only 2 dB when transmitting through the fire. This research underscores the potential for reliable communication in fire-prone environments, improving safety during natural disasters

Smart Computing and Sensing Technologies for Animal Welfare: A Systematic Review

Animals play a profoundly important and intricate role in our lives today. Dogs have been human companions for thousands of years, but they now work closely with us to assist the disabled, and in combat and search and rescue situations. Farm animals are a critical part of the global food supply chain, and there is increasing consumer interest in organically fed and humanely raised livestock, and how it impacts our health and environmental footprint. Wild animals are threatened with extinction by human induced factors, and shrinking and compromised habitat. This review sets the goal to systematically survey the existing literature in smart computing and sensing technologies for domestic, farm and wild animal welfare. We use the notion of \emph{animal welfare} in broad terms, to review the technologies for assessing whether animals are healthy, free of pain and suffering, and also positively stimulated in their environment. Also the notion of \emph{smart computing and sensing} is used in broad terms, to refer to computing and sensing systems that are not isolated but interconnected with communication networks, and capable of remote data collection, processing, exchange and analysis. We review smart technologies for domestic animals, indoor and outdoor animal farming, as well as animals in the wild and zoos. The findings of this review are expected to motivate future research and contribute to data, information and communication management as well as policy for animal welfare

Improved Localization Algorithms in Indoor Wireless Environment

Localization has been considered as an important precondition for the location-dependent applications such as mobile tracking and navigation. To obtain specific location information, we usually make use of Global Positioning System(GPS), which is the most common plat- form to acquire localization information in outdoor environments. When targets are in indoor environment, however, the GPS signal is usually blocked, so we also consider other assisted positioning techniques in order to obtain accurate position of targets. In this thesis, three different schemes in indoor environment are proposed to minimize localization error by placing refer- ence nodes in optimum locations, combining the localization information from accelerometer sensor in smartphone with Received Signal Strength (RSS) from reference nodes, and utilizing frequency diversity in Wireless Fidelity (WiFi) environment. Deployments of reference nodes are vital for locating nearby targets since they are used to estimate the distances from them to the targets. A reference nodes’ placement scheme based on minimizing the average mean square error of localization over a certain region is proposed in this thesis first and is applied in different localization regions which are circular, square and hexagonal for illustration of the flexibility of the proposed scheme. Equipped with accelerometer sensor, smartphone provides useful information which out- puts accelerations in three different directions. Combining acceleration information from smart- phones and signal strength information from reference nodes to prevent the accumulated error from accelerometer is studied in this thesis. The combined locating error is narrowed by as- signing different weights to localization information from accelerometer and reference nodes. In indoor environment, RSS technology based localization is the most common way to imply since it require less additional hardware compared to other localization technologies. However, RSS can be affected greatly by complex circumstance as well as carrier frequency. Utilization of diverse frequencies to improve localization performance is proposed in the end of this thesis along with some experiments applied on Software Defined Platform (SDR)

Influence of Information System on Emergency Department Shift Leaders’ Mobility

Emergency departments are hospital units for patients, who need emergency and acute care. Due to the state of patients, shift leader nurses and physicians need to do important decisions concerning patients’ treatment and care, quickly and efficiently. To be able to do that, they have to get needed information easily and efficiently. That is called knowledge-based leadership. When knowledge-based leadership is successful, the organisations’ information and knowledge are processed in a way, that they may be exploited in a best possible way. Unfortunately, nowadays the situation is not ideal in emergency departments, even though a lot of money has been invested in new information systems. Staff dissatisfaction with existing information systems have been reported and can be seen on staff satisfaction. On the other hand, there is not much research on how the information systems impact on shift leader nurses’ and physicians’ work. A quasi-experimental study was done in the years 2015 – 2016 in emergency departments in three central hospitals in Finland exploring the movement patterns of the shift leader professionals before and after implementation of a new information system in on unit, called intervention unit. Data was collected with Bluetooth beacons installed in different hospital rooms and corridors and with smartphones carried by shift leader nurses and physicians. Improving the knowledge management of leaders with new information systems, it is expected, that it decreases the effort needed to seek information to support decision-making. However, the result was not so unambiguous. The movement patterns changed, but they changed also in control units. A new information system can influence on hospital leader shift personnel mobility. Unfortunately, the lack of data made it impossible to count and compare actual walked distances. There should be more data – that is – from every day, every shift and every shift leader professional around the clock. Only that way, the comparison would be reliable. The mobility data from hospitals was already collected, when this thesis was written, so collecting the data was not part of this thesis. In recent years, the UK’s emergency call and response has shown elements of great strain as of today. The strain on emergency call systems estimated by a 9 million calls (including both landline and mobile) made in 2014 alone. Coupled with an increasing population and cuts in government funding, this has resulted in lower percentages of emergency response vehicles at hand and longer response times. In this paper, we highlight the main challenges of emergency services and overview of previous solutions. In addition, we propose a new system call Smart Hospital Emergency System (SHES). The main aim of SHES is to save lives through improving communications between patient and emergency services. Utilising the latest of technologies and algorithms within SHES is aiming to increase emergency communication throughput, while reducing emergency call systems issues and making the process of emergency response more efficient. Utilising health data held within a personal smartphone, and internal tracked data (GPU, Accelerometer, Gyroscope etc.), SHES aims to process the mentioned data efficiently, and securely, through automatic communications with emergency services, ultimately reducing communication bottlenecks. Live video-streaming through real-time video communication protocols is also a focus of SHES to improve initial communications between emergency services and patients. A prototype of this system has been developed. The system has been evaluated by a preliminary usability, reliability, and communication performance study
