But with the growing popularity of internet, security is one of the biggest concerns. It is important that the intruders are not able to sniff the packets that are transmitted over the internet through VoIP. Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is the most popular and commonly used protocol of VoIP. Now days, companies like Skype are using Peer-to-Peer SIP VoIP for faster and better performance. Through this project I am improving an already existing Peer-to-Peer SIP VoIP called SOSIMPLE P2P VoIP by adding confidentiality in the protocol with the help of public key cryptography

    A Taxonomy of Data Grids for Distributed Data Sharing, Management and Processing

    Data Grids have been adopted as the platform for scientific communities that need to share, access, transport, process and manage large data collections distributed worldwide. They combine high-end computing technologies with high-performance networking and wide-area storage management techniques. In this paper, we discuss the key concepts behind Data Grids and compare them with other data sharing and distribution paradigms such as content delivery networks, peer-to-peer networks and distributed databases. We then provide comprehensive taxonomies that cover various aspects of architecture, data transportation, data replication and resource allocation and scheduling. Finally, we map the proposed taxonomy to various Data Grid systems not only to validate the taxonomy but also to identify areas for future exploration. Through this taxonomy, we aim to categorise existing systems to better understand their goals and their methodology. This would help evaluate their applicability for solving similar problems. This taxonomy also provides a "gap analysis" of this area through which researchers can potentially identify new issues for investigation. Finally, we hope that the proposed taxonomy and mapping also helps to provide an easy way for new practitioners to understand this complex area of research.Comment: 46 pages, 16 figures, Technical Repor

    Using Dedicated and Opportunistic Networks in Synergy for a Cost-effective Distributed Stream Processing Platform

    This paper presents a case for exploiting the synergy of dedicated and opportunistic network resources in a distributed hosting platform for data stream processing applications. Our previous studies have demonstrated the benefits of combining dedicated reliable resources with opportunistic resources in case of high-throughput computing applications, where timely allocation of the processing units is the primary concern. Since distributed stream processing applications demand large volume of data transmission between the processing sites at a consistent rate, adequate control over the network resources is important here to assure a steady flow of processing. In this paper, we propose a system model for the hybrid hosting platform where stream processing servers installed at distributed sites are interconnected with a combination of dedicated links and public Internet. Decentralized algorithms have been developed for allocation of the two classes of network resources among the competing tasks with an objective towards higher task throughput and better utilization of expensive dedicated resources. Results from extensive simulation study show that with proper management, systems exploiting the synergy of dedicated and opportunistic resources yield considerably higher task throughput and thus, higher return on investment over the systems solely using expensive dedicated resources.Comment: 9 page

    Mesmerizer: A Effective Tool for a Complete Peer-to-Peer Software Development Life-cycle

    In this paper we present what are, in our experience, the best practices in Peer-To-Peer(P2P) application development and how we combined them in a middleware platform called Mesmerizer. We explain how simulation is an integral part of the development process and not just an assessment tool. We then present our component-based event-driven framework for P2P application development, which can be used to execute multiple instances of the same application in a strictly controlled manner over an emulated network layer for simulation/testing, or a single application in a concurrent environment for deployment purpose. We highlight modeling aspects that are of critical importance for designing and testing P2P applications, e.g. the emulation of Network Address Translation and bandwidth dynamics. We show how our simulator scales when emulating low-level bandwidth characteristics of thousands of concurrent peers while preserving a good degree of accuracy compared to a packet-level simulator

    Controlled Hopwise Averaging: Bandwidth/Energy-Efficient Asynchronous Distributed Averaging for Wireless Networks

    This paper addresses the problem of averaging numbers across a wireless network from an important, but largely neglected, viewpoint: bandwidth/energy efficiency. We show that existing distributed averaging schemes have several drawbacks and are inefficient, producing networked dynamical systems that evolve with wasteful communications. Motivated by this, we develop Controlled Hopwise Averaging (CHA), a distributed asynchronous algorithm that attempts to "make the most" out of each iteration by fully exploiting the broadcast nature of wireless medium and enabling control of when to initiate an iteration. We show that CHA admits a common quadratic Lyapunov function for analysis, derive bounds on its exponential convergence rate, and show that they outperform the convergence rate of Pairwise Averaging for some common graphs. We also introduce a new way to apply Lyapunov stability theory, using the Lyapunov function to perform greedy, decentralized, feedback iteration control. Finally, through extensive simulation on random geometric graphs, we show that CHA is substantially more efficient than several existing schemes, requiring far fewer transmissions to complete an averaging task.Comment: 33 pages, 4 figure

    EXPLORING THE EFFECTS OF VIDEO FORMATS ON TEACHING, SOCIAL, AND COGNITIVE PRESENCE IN ASYNCHRONOUS ONLINE DISCUSSIONS

    Since student retention in online courses is related to the students community, this dissertation explores the effect of discussion board prompt format on students sense of community of inquiry (CoI). The quasi-experimental study design examined the participation levels, sense of CoI (i.e., social, teaching, and cognitive presence), and final grade of nontraditional, fully online undergraduate students in an entry-level graphic design course in the Graphic Arts Department at a fully online college. The study involved 90 undergraduate students in the Graphic Arts Department at a fully online college. The study consisted of four groups: one control group who experienced the text-based discussion prompts and three experimental groups who experienced one of the asynchronous video discussion prompts (i.e., voice-over-presentation, picture-in-picture, or overlay mode). A one-way ANOVA was used to examine if the number of discussion posts made by students was significant different across groups. The same analysis was used to examine whether there was a significant difference in students final grade among the groups. A one-way multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) was used to determine if the format of facilitation for weekly discussion prompts in the online courses influenced online, nontraditional undergraduate students sense of Community of Inquiry (CoI) (i.e., social, teaching, and cognitive presence) while controlling for the CoI pretest. All results were non-significant.
