From Data Topology to a Modular Classifier
This article describes an approach to designing a distributed and modular
neural classifier. This approach introduces a new hierarchical clustering that
enables one to determine reliable regions in the representation space by
exploiting supervised information. A multilayer perceptron is then associated
with each of these detected clusters and charged with recognizing elements of
the associated cluster while rejecting all others. The obtained global
classifier is comprised of a set of cooperating neural networks and completed
by a K-nearest neighbor classifier charged with treating elements rejected by
all the neural networks. Experimental results for the handwritten digit
recognition problem and comparison with neural and statistical nonmodular
classifiers are given
Use of Modular Neural Network for Heart Disease
The medical field is very versatile field and one of the interested research areas for the scientist. It deals with many medical disease problems starting with the diagnosis of the disease, preventing from the disease and treatment for the disease. There are various types of medical disease and accordingly various types of treatment methods. In this paper we mostly concern about the diagnosis of the heart disease. Mainly two types of the diagnosis method are used one is manual and other is automatic diagnosis which consists of diagnosis of disease with the help of intelligent expert system. In this paper the modular neural network is used to diagnosis the heart disease. The attributes are divided and given to the two neural network models Backpropagation Neural Network (BPNN) and Radial Basis Function Neural Network (RBFNN) for training and testing. The two integration techniques are used two integrate the results and provide the final training accuracy and testing accuracy. The modular neural network with probabilistic product method gave an accuracy of 87.02% over training data and 85.88% over testing accuracy and with probabilistic product method gave an accuracy of 89.72% over training data and 84.70% over testing accuracy, which was experimentally determined to be better than monolithic neural networks
Limited Evaluation Cooperative Co-evolutionary Differential Evolution for Large-scale Neuroevolution
Many real-world control and classification tasks involve a large number of
features. When artificial neural networks (ANNs) are used for modeling these
tasks, the network architectures tend to be large. Neuroevolution is an
effective approach for optimizing ANNs; however, there are two bottlenecks that
make their application challenging in case of high-dimensional networks using
direct encoding. First, classic evolutionary algorithms tend not to scale well
for searching large parameter spaces; second, the network evaluation over a
large number of training instances is in general time-consuming. In this work,
we propose an approach called the Limited Evaluation Cooperative
Co-evolutionary Differential Evolution algorithm (LECCDE) to optimize
high-dimensional ANNs.
The proposed method aims to optimize the pre-synaptic weights of each
post-synaptic neuron in different subpopulations using a Cooperative
Co-evolutionary Differential Evolution algorithm, and employs a limited
evaluation scheme where fitness evaluation is performed on a relatively small
number of training instances based on fitness inheritance. We test LECCDE on
three datasets with various sizes, and our results show that cooperative
co-evolution significantly improves the test error comparing to standard
Differential Evolution, while the limited evaluation scheme facilitates a
significant reduction in computing time

Brain-inspired self-organization with cellular neuromorphic computing for multimodal unsupervised learning
Cortical plasticity is one of the main features that enable our ability to
learn and adapt in our environment. Indeed, the cerebral cortex self-organizes
itself through structural and synaptic plasticity mechanisms that are very
likely at the basis of an extremely interesting characteristic of the human
brain development: the multimodal association. In spite of the diversity of the
sensory modalities, like sight, sound and touch, the brain arrives at the same
concepts (convergence). Moreover, biological observations show that one
modality can activate the internal representation of another modality when both
are correlated (divergence). In this work, we propose the Reentrant
Self-Organizing Map (ReSOM), a brain-inspired neural system based on the
reentry theory using Self-Organizing Maps and Hebbian-like learning. We propose
and compare different computational methods for unsupervised learning and
inference, then quantify the gain of the ReSOM in a multimodal classification
task. The divergence mechanism is used to label one modality based on the
other, while the convergence mechanism is used to improve the overall accuracy
of the system. We perform our experiments on a constructed written/spoken
digits database and a DVS/EMG hand gestures database. The proposed model is
implemented on a cellular neuromorphic architecture that enables distributed
computing with local connectivity. We show the gain of the so-called hardware
plasticity induced by the ReSOM, where the system's topology is not fixed by
the user but learned along the system's experience through self-organization.Comment: Preprin
Integrating passive ubiquitous surfaces into human-computer interaction
Mobile technologies enable people to interact with computers ubiquitously. This dissertation investigates how ordinary, ubiquitous surfaces can be integrated into human-computer interaction to extend the interaction space beyond the edge of the display. It turns out that acoustic and tactile features generated during an interaction can be combined to identify input events, the user, and the surface. In addition, it is shown that a heterogeneous distribution of different surfaces is particularly suitable for realizing versatile interaction modalities. However, privacy concerns must be considered when selecting sensors, and context can be crucial in determining whether and what interaction to perform.Mobile Technologien ermöglichen den Menschen eine allgegenwärtige Interaktion mit Computern. Es stellt sich heraus, dass akustische und taktile Merkmale, die während einer Interaktion erzeugt werden, kombiniert werden können, um Eingabeereignisse, den Benutzer und die Oberfläche zu identifizieren. Darüber hinaus wird gezeigt, dass eine heterogene Verteilung verschiedener Oberflächen besonders geeignet ist, um vielfältige Interaktionsmodalitäten zu realisieren.
