High Energy Cosmic Neutrinos
While the general principles of high-energy neutrino detection have been
understood for many years, the deep, remote geographical locations of suitable
detector sites have challenged the ingenuity of experimentalists, who have
confronted unusual deployment, calibration, and robustness issues. Two high
energy neutrino programs are now operating (Baikal and AMANDA), with the
expectation of ushering in an era of multi-messenger astronomy, and two
Mediterranean programs have made impressive progress. The detectors are
optimized to detect neutrinos with energies of the order of 1-10 TeV, although
they are capable of detecting neutrinos with energies of tens of MeV to greater
than PeV. This paper outlines the interdisciplinary scientific agenda, which
span the fields of astronomy, particle physics, and cosmic ray physics, and
describes ongoing worldwide experimental programs to realize these goals.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, talk presented at the Nobel Symposium on

Efficient DSP and Circuit Architectures for Massive MIMO: State-of-the-Art and Future Directions
Massive MIMO is a compelling wireless access concept that relies on the use
of an excess number of base-station antennas, relative to the number of active
terminals. This technology is a main component of 5G New Radio (NR) and
addresses all important requirements of future wireless standards: a great
capacity increase, the support of many simultaneous users, and improvement in
energy efficiency. Massive MIMO requires the simultaneous processing of signals
from many antenna chains, and computational operations on large matrices. The
complexity of the digital processing has been viewed as a fundamental obstacle
to the feasibility of Massive MIMO in the past. Recent advances on
system-algorithm-hardware co-design have led to extremely energy-efficient
implementations. These exploit opportunities in deeply-scaled silicon
technologies and perform partly distributed processing to cope with the
bottlenecks encountered in the interconnection of many signals. For example,
prototype ASIC implementations have demonstrated zero-forcing precoding in real
time at a 55 mW power consumption (20 MHz bandwidth, 128 antennas, multiplexing
of 8 terminals). Coarse and even error-prone digital processing in the antenna
paths permits a reduction of consumption with a factor of 2 to 5. This article
summarizes the fundamental technical contributions to efficient digital signal
processing for Massive MIMO. The opportunities and constraints on operating on
low-complexity RF and analog hardware chains are clarified. It illustrates how
terminals can benefit from improved energy efficiency. The status of technology
and real-life prototypes discussed. Open challenges and directions for future
research are suggested.Comment: submitted to IEEE transactions on signal processin
Multiband Spectrum Access: Great Promises for Future Cognitive Radio Networks
Cognitive radio has been widely considered as one of the prominent solutions
to tackle the spectrum scarcity. While the majority of existing research has
focused on single-band cognitive radio, multiband cognitive radio represents
great promises towards implementing efficient cognitive networks compared to
single-based networks. Multiband cognitive radio networks (MB-CRNs) are
expected to significantly enhance the network's throughput and provide better
channel maintenance by reducing handoff frequency. Nevertheless, the wideband
front-end and the multiband spectrum access impose a number of challenges yet
to overcome. This paper provides an in-depth analysis on the recent
advancements in multiband spectrum sensing techniques, their limitations, and
possible future directions to improve them. We study cooperative communications
for MB-CRNs to tackle a fundamental limit on diversity and sampling. We also
investigate several limits and tradeoffs of various design parameters for
MB-CRNs. In addition, we explore the key MB-CRNs performance metrics that
differ from the conventional metrics used for single-band based networks.Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures; published in the Proceedings of the IEEE

Monolithic Pixel Sensors in Deep-Submicron SOI Technology
Monolithic pixel sensors for charged particle detection and imaging
applications have been designed and fabricated using commercially available,
deep-submicron Silicon-On-Insulator (SOI) processes, which insulate a thin
layer of integrated full CMOS electronics from a high-resistivity substrate by
means of a buried oxide. The substrate is contacted from the electronics layer
through vias etched in the buried oxide, allowing pixel implanting and reverse
biasing. This paper summarizes the performances achieved with a first prototype
manufactured in the OKI 0.15 micrometer FD-SOI process, featuring analog and
digital pixels on a 10 micrometer pitch. The design and preliminary results on
the analog section of a second prototype manufactured in the OKI 0.20
micrometer FD-SOI process are briefly discussed.Comment: Proceedings of the PIXEL 2008 International Workshop, FNAL, Batavia,

Advanced Algorithms for Satellite Communication Signal Processing
Dizertační práce je zaměřena na softwarově definované přijímače určené k úzkopásmové družicové komunikaci. Komunikační kanály družicových spojů zahrnujících komunikaci s hlubokým vesmírem jsou zatíženy vysokými úrovněmi šumu, typicky modelovaného AWGN, a silným Dopplerovým posuvem signálu způsobeným mimořádnou rychlostí pohybu objektu. Dizertační práce představuje možné postupy řešení výpočetně efektivní digitální downkonverze úzkopásmových signálů a systému odhadu kmitočtu nosné úzkopásmových signálů zatížených Dopplerovým posuvem v řádu násobků šířky pásma signálu. The dissertation is focused on software defined receivers intended for narrowband satellite communication. The satellite communication channel including deep space communication suffers from a high level of noise, typically modeled by AWGN, and from a strong Doppler shift of a signal caused by the unprecedented speed of an object in motion. The dissertation shows possible approaches to the issues of computationally efficient digital downconversion of narrowband signals and the carrier frequency estimation of narrowband signals distorted by the Doppler shift in the order of multiples of the signal bandwidth. The description of the proposed algorithms includes an analytical approach of its development and, if possible, the analytical performance assessment. The algorithms are modeled in MATLAB Simulink and the models are used for validating the performance by the simulation. The models were also used for experimental tests on the real signal received from the PSAT satellite at the laboratory of experimental satellites at the department of radio electronics.
Time-efficient fault detection and diagnosis system for analog circuits
Time-efficient fault analysis and diagnosis of analog circuits are the most important prerequisites to achieve online health monitoring of electronic equipments, which are involving continuing challenges of ultra-large-scale integration, component tolerance, limited test points but multiple faults. This work reports an FPGA (field programmable gate array)-based analog fault diagnostic system by applying two-dimensional information fusion, two-port network analysis and interval math theory. The proposed system has three advantages over traditional ones. First, it possesses high processing speed and smart circuit size as the embedded algorithms execute parallel on FPGA. Second, the hardware structure has a good compatibility with other diagnostic algorithms. Third, the equipped Ethernet interface enhances its flexibility for remote monitoring and controlling. The experimental results obtained from two realistic example circuits indicate that the proposed methodology had yielded competitive performance in both diagnosis accuracy and time-effectiveness, with about 96% accuracy while within 60 ms computational time.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio
Cooperative wideband spectrum sensing with multi-bit hard decision in cognitive radio
Cognitive radio offers an increasingly attractive solution to overcome the underutilization problem. A sensor network based cooperative wideband spectrum sensing is proposed in this paper. The purpose of the sensor network is to determine the frequencies of the sources and reduced the total sensing time using a multi-resolution sensing technique. The final result is computed by data fusion of multi-bit decisions made by each cooperating secondary user. Simulation results show improved performance in energy efficiency
Xampling: Signal Acquisition and Processing in Union of Subspaces
We introduce Xampling, a unified framework for signal acquisition and
processing of signals in a union of subspaces. The main functions of this
framework are two. Analog compression that narrows down the input bandwidth
prior to sampling with commercial devices. A nonlinear algorithm then detects
the input subspace prior to conventional signal processing. A representative
union model of spectrally-sparse signals serves as a test-case to study these
Xampling functions. We adopt three metrics for the choice of analog
compression: robustness to model mismatch, required hardware accuracy and
software complexities. We conduct a comprehensive comparison between two
sub-Nyquist acquisition strategies for spectrally-sparse signals, the random
demodulator and the modulated wideband converter (MWC), in terms of these
metrics and draw operative conclusions regarding the choice of analog
compression. We then address lowrate signal processing and develop an algorithm
for that purpose that enables convenient signal processing at sub-Nyquist rates
from samples obtained by the MWC. We conclude by showing that a variety of
other sampling approaches for different union classes fit nicely into our
framework.Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, submitted to IEEE for possible publicatio
