Improved targeting through collaborative decision-making and brain computer interfaces
This paper reports a first step toward a brain-computer interface (BCI) for collaborative targeting. Specifically, we explore, from a broad perspective, how the collaboration of a group of people can increase the performance on a simple target identification task. To this end, we requested a group of people to identify the location and color of a sequence of targets appearing on the screen, and measured the time and the accuracy of the response. The individual results are compared to a collective identification result determined by simple majority voting, with random choice in case of drawn. The results are promising, as the identification becomes significantly more reliable even with this simple voting, and with a small number of people (either odd or even) involved in the decision. In addition, the paper briefly analyzes the role of brain-computer interfaces in collaborative targeting, extending the targeting task by using a BCI instead of a mechanical response
The benefits of in silico modeling to identify possible small-molecule drugs and their off-target interactions
Accepted for publication in a future issue of Future Medicinal Chemistry.The research into the use of small molecules as drugs continues to be a key driver in the development of molecular databases, computer-aided drug design software and collaborative platforms. The evolution of computational approaches is driven by the essential criteria that a drug molecule has to fulfill, from the affinity to targets to minimal side effects while having adequate absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME) properties. A combination of ligand- and structure-based drug development approaches is already used to obtain consensus predictions of small molecule activities and their off-target interactions. Further integration of these methods into easy-to-use workflows informed by systems biology could realize the full potential of available data in the drug discovery and reduce the attrition of drug candidates.Peer reviewe
Analyzing recommender systems for health promotion using a multidisciplinary taxonomy: A scoping review
Background: Recommender systems are information retrieval systems that provide users with relevant items
(e.g., through messages). Despite their extensive use in the e-commerce and leisure domains, their application in
healthcare is still in its infancy. These systems may be used to create tailored health interventions, thus reducing
the cost of healthcare and fostering a healthier lifestyle in the population.
Objective: This paper identifies, categorizes, and analyzes the existing knowledge in terms of the literature
published over the past 10 years on the use of health recommender systems for patient interventions. The aim of
this study is to understand the scientific evidence generated about health recommender systems, to identify any
gaps in this field to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG3) (namely, “Ensure healthy
lives and promote well-being for all at all ages”), and to suggest possible reasons for these gaps as well as to
propose some solutions.
Methods: We conducted a scoping review, which consisted of a keyword search of the literature related to health
recommender systems for patients in the following databases: ScienceDirect, PsycInfo, Association for Computing
Machinery, IEEExplore, and Pubmed. Further, we limited our search to consider only English-lan-guage journal
articles published in the last 10 years. The reviewing process comprised three researchers who filtered the results
simultaneously. The quantitative synthesis was conducted in parallel by two researchers, who classified each
paper in terms of four aspects—the domain, the methodological and procedural aspects, the health promotion
theoretical factors and behavior change theories, and the technical aspects—using a new multidisciplinary
taxonomy.
Results: Nineteen papers met the inclusion criteria and were included in the data analysis, for which thirty-three
features were assessed. The nine features associated with the health promotion theoretical factors and behavior
change theories were not observed in any of the selected studies, did not use principles of tailoring, and did not
assess (cost)-effectiveness.
Discussion: Health recommender systems may be further improved by using relevant behavior change strategies
and by implementing essential characteristics of tailored interventions. In addition, many of the features required
to assess each of the domain aspects, the methodological and procedural aspects, and technical aspects
were not reported in the studies.
Conclusions: The studies analyzed presented few evidence in support of the positive effects of using health recommender
systems in terms of cost-effectiveness and patient health outcomes. This is why future studies should
ensure that all the proposed features are covered in our multidisciplinary taxonomy, including integration with
electronic health records and the incorporation of health promotion theoretical factors and behavior change
theories. This will render those studies more useful for policymakers since they will cover all aspects needed to

Double elevation: Autonomous weapons and the search for an irreducible law of war
What should be the role of law in response to the spread of artificial intelligence in war? Fuelled by both public and private investment, military technology is accelerating towards increasingly autonomous weapons, as well as the merging of humans and machines. Contrary to much of the contemporary debate, this is not a paradigm change; it is the intensification of a central feature in the relationship between technology and war: Double elevation, above one's enemy and above oneself. Elevation above one's enemy aspires to spatial, moral, and civilizational distance. Elevation above oneself reflects a belief in rational improvement that sees humanity as the cause of inhumanity and de-humanization as our best chance for humanization. The distance of double elevation is served by the mechanization of judgement. To the extent that judgement is seen as reducible to algorithm, law becomes the handmaiden of mechanization. In response, neither a focus on questions of compatibility nor a call for a 'ban on killer robots' help in articulating a meaningful role for law. Instead, I argue that we should turn to a long-standing philosophical critique of artificial intelligence, which highlights not the threat of omniscience, but that of impoverished intelligence. Therefore, if there is to be a meaningful role for law in resisting double elevation, it should be law encompassing subjectivity, emotion and imagination, law irreducible to algorithm, a law of war that appreciates situated judgement in the wielding of violence for the collective
Factors shaping the evolution of electronic documentation systems
The main goal is to prepare the space station technical and managerial structure for likely changes in the creation, capture, transfer, and utilization of knowledge. By anticipating advances, the design of Space Station Project (SSP) information systems can be tailored to facilitate a progression of increasingly sophisticated strategies as the space station evolves. Future generations of advanced information systems will use increases in power to deliver environmentally meaningful, contextually targeted, interconnected data (knowledge). The concept of a Knowledge Base Management System is emerging when the problem is focused on how information systems can perform such a conversion of raw data. Such a system would include traditional management functions for large space databases. Added artificial intelligence features might encompass co-existing knowledge representation schemes; effective control structures for deductive, plausible, and inductive reasoning; means for knowledge acquisition, refinement, and validation; explanation facilities; and dynamic human intervention. The major areas covered include: alternative knowledge representation approaches; advanced user interface capabilities; computer-supported cooperative work; the evolution of information system hardware; standardization, compatibility, and connectivity; and organizational impacts of information intensive environments

Brain data:Scanning, scraping and sculpting the plastic learning brain through neurotechnology
Neurotechnology is an advancing field of research and development with significant implications for education. As 'postdigital' hybrids of biological and informational codes, novel neurotechnologies combine neuroscience insights into the human brain with advanced technical development in brain imaging, brain-computer interfaces, neurofeedback platforms, brain stimulation and other neuroenhancement applications. Merging neurobiological knowledge about human life with computational technologies, neurotechnology exemplifies how postdigital science will play a significant role in societies and education in decades to come. As neurotechnology developments are being extended to education, they present potential for businesses and governments to enact new techniques of 'neurogovernance' by 'scanning' the brain, 'scraping' it for data and then 'sculpting' the brain toward particular capacities. The aim of this article is to critically review neurotechnology developments and implications for education. It examines the purposes to which neurotechnology development is being put in education, interrogating the commercial and governmental objectives associated with it and the neuroscientific concepts and expertise that underpin it. Finally, the article raises significant ethical and governance issues related to neurotechnology development and postdigital science that require concerted attention from education researchers
