    Augmenting Group Performance in Target-Face Recognition via Collaborative Brain-Computer Interfaces for Surveillance Applications

    This paper presents a hybrid collaborative brain- computer interface (cBCI) to improve group-based recognition of target faces in crowded scenes recorded from surveillance cameras. The cBCI uses a combination of neural features extracted from EEG and response times to estimate the decision confidence of the users. Group decisions are then obtained by weighing individual responses according to these confidence estimates. Results obtained with 10 participants indicate that the proposed cBCI improves decision errors by up to 7% over traditional group decisions based on majority. Moreover, the confidence estimates obtained by the cBCI are more accurate and robust than the confidence reported by the participants after each decision. These results show that cBCIs can be an effective means of human augmentation in realistic scenarios

    User-centered visual analysis using a hybrid reasoning architecture for intensive care units

    One problem pertaining to Intensive Care Unit information systems is that, in some cases, a very dense display of data can result. To ensure the overview and readability of the increasing volumes of data, some special features are required (e.g., data prioritization, clustering, and selection mechanisms) with the application of analytical methods (e.g., temporal data abstraction, principal component analysis, and detection of events). This paper addresses the problem of improving the integration of the visual and analytical methods applied to medical monitoring systems. We present a knowledge- and machine learning-based approach to support the knowledge discovery process with appropriate analytical and visual methods. Its potential benefit to the development of user interfaces for intelligent monitors that can assist with the detection and explanation of new, potentially threatening medical events. The proposed hybrid reasoning architecture provides an interactive graphical user interface to adjust the parameters of the analytical methods based on the users' task at hand. The action sequences performed on the graphical user interface by the user are consolidated in a dynamic knowledge base with specific hybrid reasoning that integrates symbolic and connectionist approaches. These sequences of expert knowledge acquisition can be very efficient for making easier knowledge emergence during a similar experience and positively impact the monitoring of critical situations.     Towards the automated localisation of targets in rapid image-sifting by collaborative brain-computer interfaces

    The N2pc is a lateralised Event-Related Potential (ERP) that signals a shift of attention towards the location of a potential object of interest. We propose a single-trial target-localisation collaborative Brain-Computer Interface (cBCI) that exploits this ERP to automatically approximate the horizontal position of targets in aerial images. Images were presented by means of the rapid serial visual presentation technique at rates of 5, 6 and 10 Hz. We created three different cBCIs and tested a participant selection method in which groups are formed according to the similarity of participants’ performance. The N2pc that is elicited in our experiments contains information about the position of the target along the horizontal axis. Moreover, combining information from multiple participants provides absolute median improvements in the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of up to 21% (for groups of size 3) with respect to single-user BCIs. These improvements are bigger when groups are formed by participants with similar individual performance, and much of this effect can be explained using simple theoretical models. Our results suggest that BCIs for automated triaging can be improved by integrating two classification systems: one devoted to target detection and another to detect the attentional shifts associated with lateral targets

    Collaborative Brain-Computer Interface for Human Interest Detection in Complex and Dynamic Settings

    Humans can fluidly adapt their interest in complex environments in ways that machines cannot. Here, we lay the groundwork for a real-world system that passively monitors and merges neural correlates of visual interest across team members via Collaborative Brain Computer Interface (cBCI). When group interest is detected and co-registered in time and space, it can be used to model the task relevance of items in a dynamic, natural environment. Previous work in cBCIs focuses on static stimuli, stimulus- or response- locked analyses, and often within-subject and experiment model training. The contributions of this work are twofold. First, we test the utility of cBCI on a scenario that more closely resembles natural conditions, where subjects visually scanned a video for target items in a virtual environment. Second, we use an experiment-agnostic deep learning model to account for the real-world use case where no training set exists that exactly matches the end-users task and circumstances. With our approach we show improved performance as the number of subjects in the cBCI ensemble grows, and the potential to reconstruct ground-truth target occurrence in an otherwise noisy and complex environment.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure

    What does touch tell us about emotions in touchscreen-based gameplay?

This phenomenon raises a very interesting question: does touch behaviour reflect the player’s emotional state? If possible, this would not only be a valuable evaluation indicator for game designers, but also for real-time personalization of the game experience. Psychology studies on acted touch behaviour show the existence of discriminative affective profiles. In this paper, finger-stroke features during gameplay on an iPod were extracted and their discriminative power analysed. Based on touch-behaviour, machine learning algorithms were used to build systems for automatically discriminating between four emotional states (Excited, Relaxed, Frustrated, Bored), two levels of arousal and two levels of valence. The results were very interesting reaching between 69% and 77% of correct discrimination between the four emotional states. Higher results (~89%) were obtained for discriminating between two levels of arousal and two levels of valence

    E-infrastructures fostering multi-centre collaborative research into the intensive care management of patients with brain injury

    Clinical research is becoming ever more collaborative with multi-centre trials now a common practice. With this in mind, never has it been more important to have secure access to data and, in so doing, tackle the challenges of inter-organisational data access and usage. This is especially the case for research conducted within the brain injury domain due to the complicated multi-trauma nature of the disease with its associated complex collation of time-series data of varying resolution and quality. It is now widely accepted that advances in treatment within this group of patients will only be delivered if the technical infrastructures underpinning the collection and validation of multi-centre research data for clinical trials is improved. In recognition of this need, IT-based multi-centre e-Infrastructures such as the Brain Monitoring with Information Technology group (BrainIT - www.brainit.org) and Cooperative Study on Brain Injury Depolarisations (COSBID - www.cosbid.de) have been formed. A serious impediment to the effective implementation of these networks is access to the know-how and experience needed to install, deploy and manage security-oriented middleware systems that provide secure access to distributed hospital based datasets and especially the linkage of these data sets across sites. The recently funded EU framework VII ICT project Advanced Arterial Hypotension Adverse Event prediction through a Novel Bayesian Neural Network (AVERT-IT) is focused upon tackling these challenges. This chapter describes the problems inherent to data collection within the brain injury medical domain, the current IT-based solutions designed to address these problems and how they perform in practice. We outline how the authors have collaborated towards developing Grid solutions to address the major technical issues. Towards this end we describe a prototype solution which ultimately formed the basis for the AVERT-IT project. We describe the design of the underlying Grid infrastructure for AVERT-IT and how it will be used to produce novel approaches to data collection, data validation and clinical trial design is also presented
