    Sierra Leone fish value chain analysis with special emphasis on Tonkolili District

    The USAID-funded Sierra Leone Feed the Future (FtF) Agriculture Project implemented by WorldFish has completed its initial pilot phase (July 2015 to September 2016). During this phase, the project identified and tested interventions to develop integrated agriculture-aquaculture (IAA) farming systems and associated value chains to enhance food, nutrition and livelihood outcomes for rural households in Tonkolili District. This project emphasizes rehabilitation and improvement of fish and rice farming systems combined with nutritious vegetable crops. The assessment of existing fish and rice value chains in Sierra Leone was a key component of this initial phase to improve understanding of current farming systems and identify opportunities for interventions to increase productivity and income and improve nutrition among rural households in Tonkolili District. This report presents the key findings of the fish value chain assessment, with an emphasis on the development of the aquaculture sector and recommendations for potential value chain interventions in marine and freshwater fisheries and aquaculture sectors

    Mercury speciation, transformation, and transportation in soils, atmospheric flux, and implications for risk management : a critical review

    Mercury (Hg) is a potentially harmful trace element in the environment and one of the World Health Organization's foremost chemicals of concern. The threat posed by Hg contaminated soils to humans is pervasive, with an estimated 86 Gg of anthropogenic Hg pollution accumulated in surface soils worldwide. This review critically examines both recent advances and remaining knowledge gaps with respect to cycling of mercury in the soil environment, to aid the assessment and management of risks caused by Hg contamination. Included in this review are factors affecting Hg release from soil to the atmosphere, including how rainfall events drive gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) flux from soils of low Hg content, and how ambient conditions such as atmospheric O3 concentration play a significant role. Mercury contaminated soils constitute complex systems where many interdependent factors, including the amount and composition of soil organic matter and clays, oxidized minerals (e.g. Fe oxides), reduced elements (e.g. S2−), as well as soil pH and redox conditions affect Hg forms and transformation. Speciation influences the extent and rate of Hg subsurface transportation, which has often been assumed insignificant. Nano-sized Hg particles as well as soluble Hg complexes play important roles in soil Hg mobility, availability, and methylation. Finally, implications for human health and suggested research directions are put forward, where there is significant potential to improve remedial actions by accounting for Hg speciation and transportation factors

    Trade in Northeast Asia: Why do Trade Costs Matter?

    Trade costs are often cited as an important determinant of the volume of trade. This paper provides enough evidences to ascertain that today’s trade issues in Northeast Asia go beyond the traditional mechanisms of tariffs, and include “behind-the-border” issues. By estimating a modified gravity equation, controlling for endogeneity and remoteness, we find that variations in transaction costs along with trade infrastructure facilities have significant influence on regional trade flows in Northeast Asia. On average, 10 percent saving in transaction costs increases imports by about 5 percent in Northeast Asia. This paper concludes that when tariffs tend to become low in Northeast Asia, the economies in this region could potentially benefit substantially from higher trade provided trade costs are well controlled.trade costs, transaction costs, infrastructure, regional trade, tariff

    Sustainable development imperatives drive industrial selection in the field of product development. Indeed, automotive productiveness plays a key-role in the worldwide trend for the transition towards a more environmentally friendly, economically affordable and socially sustainable balance. In the last few years automotive industry has been rapidly changed due to the increasingly concerned about resource depletion and GHG emissions generation. In this framework, actions addressed to reduce automotive impact has increased. To meet environmental improvement expectation a new design mind-set formula is necessary to integrate environmental attribution to component characteristic: the life cycle thinking approach. In this way, the selection of design for environment strategy is based on a balance between technological, manufacturing and sustainability aspect without shifting environmental consequences beyond company area. Magneti Marelli© Spa as a part of automotive sector has started to be committed on sustainability programs in order to reduce the impact caused by its product on the environment. The Company adopted a methodology, modeled on proposals made by scientific institutes, for the creation of its own system, devoted to obtain results, which could be measurable, understandable and implementable to their strategic plan. The well-recognized Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment methodology, was used and adapted to the company’s context for R&D applications and purposes. This effort was accomplished with the collaboration of company members at different levels (R&D, purchase, logistics, innovation) and with the stakeholders’ collaboration (suppliers of materials and semi-products, EoL management companies and vehicle users) and resulted in over fourteen projects which introduced a wide array of innovative materials, processes and technological applications.
