Space-time processing for wireless mobile communications
Intersymbol interference (ISI) and co-channel interference (CCI) are two major
obstacles to high speed data transmission in wireless cellular communications
systems. Unlike thermal noise, their effects cannot be removed by
increasing the signal power and are time-varying due to the relative motion
between the transmitters and receivers. Space-time processing offers a signal
processing framework to optimally integrate the spatial and temporal properties
of the signal for maximal signal reception and at the same time, mitigate
the ISI and CCI impairments. In this thesis, we focus on the development of
this emerging technology to combat the undesirable effects of ISI and CCL
We first develop a convenient mathematical model to parameterize the
space-time multipath channel based on signal path power, directions and
times of arrival. Starting from the continuous time-domain, we derive compact
expressions of the vector space-time channel model that lead to the
notion of block space-time manifold, Under certain identifiability conditions,
the noiseless vector-channel outputs will lie on a subspace constructed from
a set. of basis belonging to the block space-time manifold. This is an important
observation as many high resolution array processing algorithms Can be
applied directly to estimate the multi path channel parameters.
Next we focus on the development of semi-blind channel identification
and equalization algorithms for fast time-varying multi path channels. Specifically.
we develop space-time processing algorithms for wireless TDMA networks that use short burst data formats with extremely short training data.
sequences. Due to the latter, the estimated channel parameters are extremely
unreliable for equalization with conventional adaptive methods. We approach
the channel acquisition, tracking and equalization problems jointly, and exploit
the richness of the inherent structural relationship between the channel
parameters and the data sequence by repeated use of available data through a forward- backward optimization procedure. This enables the fuller exploitation
of the available data. Our simulation studies show that significant performance
gains are achieved over conventional methods.
In the final part of this thesis, we address the problem identifying and
equalizing multi path communication channels in the presence of strong CCl.
By considering CCI as stochasic processes, we find that temporal diversity
can be gained by observing the channel outputs from a tapped delay line. Together with the assertion that the finite alphabet property of the information
sequences can offer additional information about the channel parameters and
the noise-plus-covariance matrix, we develop a spatial temporal algorithm,
iterative reweighting alternating minimization, to estimate the channel parameters
and information sequence in a weighted least squares framework.
The proposed algorithm is robust as it does not require knowledge of the
number of CCI nor their structural information. Simulation studies demonstrate
its efficacy over many reported methods
Forest structure from terrestrial laser scanning – in support of remote sensing calibration/validation and operational inventory
Forests are an important part of the natural ecosystem, providing resources such as timber and fuel, performing services such as energy exchange and carbon storage, and presenting risks, such as fire damage and invasive species impacts. Improved characterization of forest structural attributes is desirable, as it could improve our understanding and management of these natural resources.
However, the traditional, systematic collection of forest information – dubbed “forest inventory” – is time-consuming, expensive, and coarse when compared to novel 3-D measurement technologies. Remote sensing estimates, on the other hand, provide synoptic coverage, but often fail to capture the fine- scale structural variation of the forest environment. Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) has demonstrated a potential to address these limitations, but its operational use has remained limited due to unsatisfactory performance characteristics vs. budgetary constraints of many end-users.
To address this gap, my dissertation advanced affordable mobile laser scanning capabilities for operational forest structure assessment. We developed geometric reconstruction of forest structure from rapid-scan, low-resolution point cloud data, providing for automatic extraction of standard forest inventory metrics. To augment these results over larger areas, we designed a view-invariant feature descriptor to enable marker-free registration of TLS data pairs, without knowledge of the initial sensor pose. Finally, a graph-theory framework was integrated to perform multi-view registration between a network of disconnected scans, which provided improved assessment of forest inventory variables.
This work addresses a major limitation related to the inability of TLS to assess forest structure at an operational scale, and may facilitate improved understanding of the phenomenology of airborne sensing systems, by providing fine-scale reference data with which to interpret the active or passive electromagnetic radiation interactions with forest structure. Outputs are being utilized to provide antecedent science data for NASA’s HyspIRI mission and to support the National Ecological Observatory Network’s (NEON) long-term environmental monitoring initiatives
Advanced DSP Techniques for High-Capacity and Energy-Efficient Optical Fiber Communications
The rapid proliferation of the Internet has been driving communication networks closer and closer to their limits, while available bandwidth is disappearing due to an ever-increasing network load. Over the past decade, optical fiber communication technology has increased per fiber data rate from 10 Tb/s to exceeding 10 Pb/s. The major explosion came after the maturity of coherent detection and advanced digital signal processing (DSP). DSP has played a critical role in accommodating channel impairments mitigation, enabling advanced modulation formats for spectral efficiency transmission and realizing flexible bandwidth. This book aims to explore novel, advanced DSP techniques to enable multi-Tb/s/channel optical transmission to address pressing bandwidth and power-efficiency demands. It provides state-of-the-art advances and future perspectives of DSP as well
Sparseness-controlled adaptive algorithms for supervised and unsupervised system identification
In single-channel hands-free telephony, the acoustic coupling between the loudspeaker and
the microphone can be strong and this generates echoes that can degrade user experience.
Therefore, effective acoustic echo cancellation (AEC) is necessary to maintain a stable
system and hence improve the perceived voice quality of a call. Traditionally, adaptive
filters have been deployed in acoustic echo cancellers to estimate the acoustic impulse
responses (AIRs) using adaptive algorithms. The performances of a range of well-known
algorithms are studied in the context of both AEC and network echo cancellation (NEC).
It presents insights into their tracking performances under both time-invariant and time-varying
system conditions.
In the context of AEC, the level of sparseness in AIRs can vary greatly in a mobile
environment. When the response is strongly sparse, convergence of conventional
approaches is poor. Drawing on techniques originally developed for NEC, a class of time-domain
and a frequency-domain AEC algorithms are proposed that can not only work
well in both sparse and dispersive circumstances, but also adapt dynamically to the level
of sparseness using a new sparseness-controlled approach.
As it will be shown later that the early part of the acoustic echo path is sparse
while the late reverberant part of the acoustic path is dispersive, a novel approach to
an adaptive filter structure that consists of two time-domain partition blocks is proposed
such that different adaptive algorithms can be used for each part. By properly controlling
the mixing parameter for the partitioned blocks separately, where the block lengths are
controlled adaptively, the proposed partitioned block algorithm works well in both sparse
and dispersive time-varying circumstances.
A new insight into an analysis on the tracking performance of improved proportionate
NLMS (IPNLMS) is presented by deriving the expression for the mean-square error.
By employing the framework for both sparse and dispersive time-varying echo paths, this
work validates the analytic results in practical simulations for AEC.
The time-domain second-order statistic based blind SIMO identification algorithms,
which exploit the cross relation method, are investigated and then a technique with proportionate
step-size control for both sparse and dispersive system identification is also
developed
Pixel-level Image Fusion Algorithms for Multi-camera Imaging System
This thesis work is motivated by the potential and promise of image fusion technologies in the multi sensor image fusion system and applications. With specific focus on pixel level image fusion, the process after the image registration is processed, we develop graphic user interface for multi-sensor image fusion software using Microsoft visual studio and Microsoft Foundation Class library. In this thesis, we proposed and presented some image fusion algorithms with low computational cost, based upon spatial mixture analysis. The segment weighted average image fusion combines several low spatial resolution data source from different sensors to create high resolution and large size of fused image. This research includes developing a segment-based step, based upon stepwise divide and combine process. In the second stage of the process, the linear interpolation optimization is used to sharpen the image resolution. Implementation of these image fusion algorithms are completed based on the graphic user interface we developed. Multiple sensor image fusion is easily accommodated by the algorithm, and the results are demonstrated at multiple scales. By using quantitative estimation such as mutual information, we obtain the experiment quantifiable results. We also use the image morphing technique to generate fused image sequence, to simulate the results of image fusion. While deploying our pixel level image fusion algorithm approaches, we observe several challenges from the popular image fusion methods. While high computational cost and complex processing steps of image fusion algorithms provide accurate fused results, they also makes it hard to become deployed in system and applications that require real-time feedback, high flexibility and low computation abilit
Trajectory generation for lane-change maneuver of autonomous vehicles
Lane-change maneuver is one of the most thoroughly investigated automatic driving operations that can be used by an autonomous self-driving vehicle as a primitive for performing more complex operations like merging, entering/exiting highways or overtaking another vehicle. This thesis focuses on two coherent problems that are associated with the trajectory generation for lane-change maneuvers of autonomous vehicles in a highway scenario: (i) an effective velocity estimation of neighboring vehicles under different road scenarios involving linear and curvilinear motion of the vehicles, and (ii) trajectory generation based on the estimated velocities of neighboring vehicles for safe operation of self-driving cars during lane-change maneuvers. ^ We first propose a two-stage, interactive-multiple-model-based estimator to perform multi-target tracking of neighboring vehicles in a lane-changing scenario. The first stage deals with an adaptive window based turn-rate estimation for tracking maneuvering target vehicles using Kalman filter. In the second stage, variable-structure models with updated estimated turn-rate are utilized to perform data association followed by velocity estimation. Based on the estimated velocities of neighboring vehicles, piecewise Bezier-curve-based methods that minimize the safety/collision risk involved and maximize the comfort ride have been developed for the generation of desired trajectory for lane-change maneuvers. The proposed velocity-estimation and trajectory-generation algorithms have been validated experimentally using Pioneer3- DX mobile robots in a simulated lane-change environment as well as validated by computer simulations
