Multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) systems are a key component of future wireless communication systems, because of their promising improvement in terms of performance and bandwidth efficiency. An important research topic is the study of multi-user (MU) MIMO systems. Such systems have the potential to combine the high throughput achievable with MIMO processing with the benefits of space division multiple access (SDMA). The main question from a practical standpoint is whether the initially predicted capacity gains can be obtained in more realistic scenarios and what specific gains result from adding more antennas and overhead or computational power to obtain channel state information (CSI) at the transceivers. In this thesis we introduce new linear and non-linear MU MIMO processing techniques. The approach used for the design of the precoding matrix is general and the resulting algorithms can address several optimization criteria with an arbitrary number of antennas at the user terminals (UTs). This is achieved by designing the precoding matrices in two steps. In the first step we minimize the overlap of the row spaces spanned by the effective channel matrices of different users. In the next step, we optimize the system performance with respect to the specific optimization criterion assuming a set of parallel single-user MIMO channels. As it was previously reported in the literature, minimum mean-squared-error (MMSE) processing is optimum for single-antenna UTs. However, MMSE suffers from a performance loss when users are equipped with more than one antenna. The two MU MIMO processing techniques that result from the two different MSE criteria that are proposed in this thesis are successive MMSE and regularized block diagonalization. By iterating the closed form solution with appropriate power loading we are able to extract the full diversity in the system and empirically approach the maximum sum-rate capacity in case of high multi-user interference. Joint processing of MIMO channels yields maximum diversity regardless of the level of multi-user interference. As these techniques rely on the fact that there is either instantaneous or long- term CSI available at the base station to perform precoding and decoding, it was very important to investigate the influence of the transceiver front-end imperfections and channel estimation errors on their performance. For a comprehensive assessment of multi-antenna techniques, it is mandatory to consider the performance at system level, since many effects of spatial processing are not tractable at the link level. System level investigations have shown that MU MIMO precoding techniques provide several times higher data rates than single-input single-output systems with only slightly increased pilot and control overhead

With the great developments in wireless communication technologies, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have gained attention worldwide in the past decade and are now being used in health monitoring, disaster management, defense, telecommunications, etc. Such networks are used in many industrial and consumer applications such as industrial process and environment monitoring, among others. A WSN network is a collection of specialized transducers known as sensor nodes with a communication link distributed randomly in any locations to monitor environmental parameters such as water level, and temperature. Each sensor node is equipped with a transducer, a signal processor, a power unit, and a transceiver. WSNs are now being widely used in the underground mining industry to monitor environmental parameters, including the amount of gas, water, temperature, humidity, oxygen level, dust, etc. The WSN for environment monitoring can be equivalently replaced by a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay network. Multi-hop relay networks have attracted significant research interest in recent years for their capability in increasing the coverage range. The network communication link from a source to a destination is implemented using the amplify-and-forward (AF) or decode-and-forward (DF) schemes. The AF relay receives information from the previous relay and simply amplifies the received signal and then forwards it to the next relay. On the other hand, the DF relay first decodes the received signal and then forwards it to the next relay in the second stage if it can perfectly decode the incoming signal. For analytical simplicity, in this thesis, we consider the AF relaying scheme and the results of this work can also be developed for the DF relay. The transceiver design for multi-hop MIMO relay is very challenging. This is because at the L-th relay stage, there are 2L possible channels. So, for a large scale network, it is not economical to send the signal through all possible links. Instead, we can find the best path from source-to-destination that gives the highest end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). We can minimize the mean square error (MSE) or bit error rate (BER) objective function by sending the signal using the selected path. The set of relay in the path remains active and the rest of the relays are turned off which can save power to enhance network life-time. The best path signal transmission has been carried out in the literature for 2-hop MIMO relay and for multiple relaying it becomes very complex. In the first part of this thesis, we propose an optimal best path finding algorithm at perfect channel state information (CSI). We consider a parallel multi-hop multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) AF relay system where a linear minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) receiver is used at the destination. We simplify the parallel network into equivalent series multi-hop MIMO relay link using best relaying, where the best relay ..

Multiuser MIMO-OFDM for Next-Generation Wireless Systems

    No full text
This overview portrays the 40-year evolution of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) research. The amelioration of powerful multicarrier OFDM arrangements with multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems has numerous benefits, which are detailed in this treatise. We continue by highlighting the limitations of conventional detection and channel estimation techniques designed for multiuser MIMO OFDM systems in the so-called rank-deficient scenarios, where the number of users supported or the number of transmit antennas employed exceeds the number of receiver antennas. This is often encountered in practice, unless we limit the number of users granted access in the base station’s or radio port’s coverage area. Following a historical perspective on the associated design problems and their state-of-the-art solutions, the second half of this treatise details a range of classic multiuser detectors (MUDs) designed for MIMO-OFDM systems and characterizes their achievable performance. A further section aims for identifying novel cutting-edge genetic algorithm (GA)-aided detector solutions, which have found numerous applications in wireless communications in recent years. In an effort to stimulate the cross pollination of ideas across the machine learning, optimization, signal processing, and wireless communications research communities, we will review the broadly applicable principles of various GA-assisted optimization techniques, which were recently proposed also for employment inmultiuser MIMO OFDM. In order to stimulate new research, we demonstrate that the family of GA-aided MUDs is capable of achieving a near-optimum performance at the cost of a significantly lower computational complexity than that imposed by their optimum maximum-likelihood (ML) MUD aided counterparts. The paper is concluded by outlining a range of future research options that may find their way into next-generation wireless systems

Transmit and Receive Signal Processing for MIMO Terrestrial Broadcast Systems

[EN] Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) technology in Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) networks has the potential to increase the spectral efficiency and improve network coverage to cope with the competition of limited spectrum use (e.g., assignment of digital dividend and spectrum demands of mobile broadband), the appearance of new high data rate services (e.g., ultra-high definition TV - UHDTV), and the ubiquity of the content (e.g., fixed, portable, and mobile). It is widely recognised that MIMO can provide multiple benefits such as additional receive power due to array gain, higher resilience against signal outages due to spatial diversity, and higher data rates due to the spatial multiplexing gain of the MIMO channel. These benefits can be achieved without additional transmit power nor additional bandwidth, but normally come at the expense of a higher system complexity at the transmitter and receiver ends. The final system performance gains due to the use of MIMO directly depend on physical characteristics of the propagation environment such as spatial correlation, antenna orientation, and/or power imbalances experienced at the transmit aerials. Additionally, due to complexity constraints and finite-precision arithmetic at the receivers, it is crucial for the overall system performance to carefully design specific signal processing algorithms. This dissertation focuses on transmit and received signal processing for DTT systems using MIMO-BICM (Bit-Interleaved Coded Modulation) without feedback channel to the transmitter from the receiver terminals. At the transmitter side, this thesis presents investigations on MIMO precoding in DTT systems to overcome system degradations due to different channel conditions. At the receiver side, the focus is given on design and evaluation of practical MIMO-BICM receivers based on quantized information and its impact in both the in-chip memory size and system performance. These investigations are carried within the standardization process of DVB-NGH (Digital Video Broadcasting - Next Generation Handheld) the handheld evolution of DVB-T2 (Terrestrial - Second Generation), and ATSC 3.0 (Advanced Television Systems Committee - Third Generation), which incorporate MIMO-BICM as key technology to overcome the Shannon limit of single antenna communications. Cooperative Transmitter-Receiver Arrayed Communications

This thesis is concerned with array processing for wireless communications. In particular, cooperation between the transmitter and receiver or between systems is exploited to further improve the system performance. Based on this idea, three technical chapters are presented in this thesis. Initially in Chapter 1, an introduction including array processing, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems and the background of cognitive radio is presented. In Chapter 2, a novel approach for estimating the direction-of-departure (DOD) is proposed using the cooperative beamforming. This proposed approach is featured by its simplicity (beam rotation at the transmitter) and effectiveness (illustrated in terms of channel capacity). Chapter 3 is concerned with integration of spatio-temporal (ST) processing into an antenna array transmitter, given a joint transmitter-receiver system with ST processing at the receiver but spatial-only processing at the transmitter. The transmit ST processing further improves the system performance in convergence, mean-square error (MSE) and bit error rate (BER). In Chapter 4, a basic system structure for radio coexistence problem is proposed based on the concept of MIMO cognitive radio. Cooperation between the licensed radio and the cognitive radio is exploited. Optimisation of the sum channel capacity is considered as the criterion and it is solved using a multivariable water-filling algorithm. Finally, Chapter 5 concludes this thesis and gives suggestions for future work
