    Semantic multimedia modelling & interpretation for annotation

    The emergence of multimedia enabled devices, particularly the incorporation of cameras in mobile phones, and the accelerated revolutions in the low cost storage devices, boosts the multimedia data production rate drastically. Witnessing such an iniquitousness of digital images and videos, the research community has been projecting the issue of its significant utilization and management. Stored in monumental multimedia corpora, digital data need to be retrieved and organized in an intelligent way, leaning on the rich semantics involved. The utilization of these image and video collections demands proficient image and video annotation and retrieval techniques. Recently, the multimedia research community is progressively veering its emphasis to the personalization of these media. The main impediment in the image and video analysis is the semantic gap, which is the discrepancy among a user’s high-level interpretation of an image and the video and the low level computational interpretation of it. Content-based image and video annotation systems are remarkably susceptible to the semantic gap due to their reliance on low-level visual features for delineating semantically rich image and video contents. However, the fact is that the visual similarity is not semantic similarity, so there is a demand to break through this dilemma through an alternative way. The semantic gap can be narrowed by counting high-level and user-generated information in the annotation. High-level descriptions of images and or videos are more proficient of capturing the semantic meaning of multimedia content, but it is not always applicable to collect this information. It is commonly agreed that the problem of high level semantic annotation of multimedia is still far from being answered. This dissertation puts forward approaches for intelligent multimedia semantic extraction for high level annotation. This dissertation intends to bridge the gap between the visual features and semantics. It proposes a framework for annotation enhancement and refinement for the object/concept annotated images and videos datasets. The entire theme is to first purify the datasets from noisy keyword and then expand the concepts lexically and commonsensical to fill the vocabulary and lexical gap to achieve high level semantics for the corpus. This dissertation also explored a novel approach for high level semantic (HLS) propagation through the images corpora. The HLS propagation takes the advantages of the semantic intensity (SI), which is the concept dominancy factor in the image and annotation based semantic similarity of the images. As we are aware of the fact that the image is the combination of various concepts and among the list of concepts some of them are more dominant then the other, while semantic similarity of the images are based on the SI and concept semantic similarity among the pair of images. Moreover, the HLS exploits the clustering techniques to group similar images, where a single effort of the human experts to assign high level semantic to a randomly selected image and propagate to other images through clustering. The investigation has been made on the LabelMe image and LabelMe video dataset. Experiments exhibit that the proposed approaches perform a noticeable improvement towards bridging the semantic gap and reveal that our proposed system outperforms the traditional systems

    Fine-Grained Image Analysis with Deep Learning: A Survey

    Fine-grained image analysis (FGIA) is a longstanding and fundamental problem in computer vision and pattern recognition, and underpins a diverse set of real-world applications. The task of FGIA targets analyzing visual objects from subordinate categories, e.g., species of birds or models of cars. The small inter-class and large intra-class variation inherent to fine-grained image analysis makes it a challenging problem. Capitalizing on advances in deep learning, in recent years we have witnessed remarkable progress in deep learning powered FGIA. In this paper we present a systematic survey of these advances, where we attempt to re-define and broaden the field of FGIA by consolidating two fundamental fine-grained research areas -- fine-grained image recognition and fine-grained image retrieval. In addition, we also review other key issues of FGIA, such as publicly available benchmark datasets and related domain-specific applications. We conclude by highlighting several research directions and open problems which need further exploration from the community.Comment: Accepted by IEEE TPAM

    Text mining of biomedical literature: discovering new knowledge

    Biomedical literature is increasing day by day. The present scenario shows that the volume of literature regarding “coronavirus” has expanded at a high rate. In this study, text mining technique has been employed to discover something new from the published literature. The main objectives of this study are to show the growth of literature (Jan-Jun, 2020), extract document section, identify latent topics, find the most frequent word, represent the bag of words, and the hierarchical clustering. We have collected 16500 documents from PubMed. This study finds most number of documents (11499) belong to May and June. We explore “betacoronavirus” as the leading document section (3837); “covid” (29890) as the most frequent word in the abstracts; and positive-negative weights of topics. Further, we measure the term frequency (TF) of a document title in the bag of words model. Then we compute a hierarchical clustering of document titles. It reveals that the lowest distance the selected cluster (C133) is 0.30. We also have made a discussion over future prospects and mentioned that this paper can be useful to researchers and library professionals for knowledge management

    TOWARDS BUILDING INTELLIGENT COLLABORATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING SYSTEMS

    Historically, Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) systems were more focused on Human Computer Interaction (HCI) issues, such as providing good experience of communication among the participants. Whereas, Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) focus both on HCI issues as well as leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques in their intelligent agents. This dissertation seeks to minimize the gap between CPS systems and ITS by adopting the methods used in ITS researches. To move towards this goal, we focus on analyzing interactions with textual inputs in online learning systems such as DeepTutor and Virtual Internships (VI) to understand their semantics and underlying intents. In order to address the problem of assessing the student generated short text, this research explores firstly data driven machine learning models coupled with expert generated as well as general text analysis features. Secondly it explores method to utilize knowledge graph embedding for assessing student answer in ITS. Finally, it also explores a method using only standard reference examples generated by human teacher. Such method is useful when a new system has been deployed and no student data were available.To handle negation in tutorial dialogue, this research explored a Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) based method. The advantage of this method is that it requires no human engineered features and performs comparably well with other models using human engineered features.Another important analysis done in this research is to find speech acts in conversation utterances of multiple players in VI. Among various models, a noise label trained neural network model performed better in categorizing the speech acts of the utterances.The learners\u27 professional skill development in VI is characterized by the distribution of SKIVE elements, the components of epistemic frames. Inferring the population distribution of these elements could help to assess the learners\u27 skill development. This research sought a Markov method to infer the population distribution of SKIVE elements, namely the stationary distribution of the elements.While studying various aspects of interactions in our targeted learning systems, we motivate our research to replace the human mentor or tutor with intelligent agent. Introducing intelligent agent in place of human helps to reduce the cost as well as scale up the system

    Diverse Data Augmentation with Diffusions for Effective Test-time Prompt Tuning

    Benefiting from prompt tuning, recent years have witnessed the promising performance of pre-trained vision-language models, e.g., CLIP, on versatile downstream tasks. In this paper, we focus on a particular setting of learning adaptive prompts on the fly for each test sample from an unseen new domain, which is known as test-time prompt tuning (TPT). Existing TPT methods typically rely on data augmentation and confidence selection. However, conventional data augmentation techniques, e.g., random resized crops, suffers from the lack of data diversity, while entropy-based confidence selection alone is not sufficient to guarantee prediction fidelity. To address these issues, we propose a novel TPT method, named DiffTPT, which leverages pre-trained diffusion models to generate diverse and informative new data. Specifically, we incorporate augmented data by both conventional method and pre-trained stable diffusion to exploit their respective merits, improving the models ability to adapt to unknown new test data. Moreover, to ensure the prediction fidelity of generated data, we introduce a cosine similarity-based filtration technique to select the generated data with higher similarity to the single test sample. Our experiments on test datasets with distribution shifts and unseen categories demonstrate that DiffTPT improves the zero-shot accuracy by an average of 5.13\% compared to the state-of-the-art TPT method.     A Review of Opportunities and Challenges of Carers’ Support on Online Social Platforms

    The purpose of this study is to investigate opportunities and challenges of carers’ support on online social platforms. We conducted a systematic literature review of 20 journal articles, and explored positive and negative aspects of online social platforms in three main categories: (i) Carer Wellbeing, (ii) Care Service, and (iii) Common Opportunities or Challenges. A Demographic analysis of publication year, country, user type, and research method have been discussed. The study uncovered that online platforms have a proportional amount of positive and negative impacts. We found that (i) the challenges guide us on how to educate carers and plan for uncertainties, and (ii) the opportunities shed a ray of hope on ways to assist the carers using online social networks. Results guide future research in mitigating challenges and strengthening opportunities for supporting and empowering carers on online social platforms
