    Parallel Algorithms for Depth-First Search

    In this paper we examine parallel algorithms for performing a depth-first search (DFS) of a directed or undirected graph in sub-linear time. this subject is interesting in part because DFS seemed at first to be an inherently sequential process, and for a long time many researchers believed that no such algorithms existed. We survey three seminal papers on the subject. The first one proves that a special case of DFS is (in all likelihood) inherently sequential; the second shows that DFS for planar undirected graphs is in NC; and the third shows that DFS for general undirected graphs is in RNC. We also discuss randomnized algorithms, P-completeness and matching, three topics that are essential for understanding and appreciating the results in these papers

    A taxonomy of problems with fast parallel algorithms

    The class NC consists of problems solvable very fast (in time polynomial in log n) in parallel with a feasible (polynomial) number of processors. Many natural problems in NC are known; in this paper an attempt is made to identify important subclasses of NC and give interesting examples in each subclass. The notion of NC1-reducibility is introduced and used throughout (problem R is NC1-reducible to problem S if R can be solved with uniform log-depth circuits using oracles for S). Problems complete with respect to this reducibility are given for many of the subclasses of NC. A general technique, the “parallel greedy algorithm,” is identified and used to show that finding a minimum spanning forest of a graph is reducible to the graph accessibility problem and hence is in NC2 (solvable by uniform Boolean circuits of depth O(log2 n) and polynomial size). The class LOGCFL is given a new characterization in terms of circuit families. The class DET of problems reducible to integer determinants is defined and many examples given. A new problem complete for deterministic polynomial time is given, namely, finding the lexicographically first maximal clique in a graph. This paper is a revised version of S. A.     Parallel Algorithmic Techniques for Combinatorial Computation

    Parallel computation offers the promise of great improvements in the solution of problems that, if we were restricted to sequential computation, would take so much time that solution would be impractical. There is a drawback to the use of parallel computers, however, and that is that they seem to be harder to program. For this reason, parallel algorithms in practice are often restricted to simple problems such as matrix multiplication. Certainly this is useful, and in fact we shall see later some non-obvious uses of matrix manipulation, but many of the large problems requiring solution are of a more complex nature. In particular, an instance of a problem may be structured as an arbitrary graph or tree, rather than in the regular order of a matrix. In this paper we describe a number of algorithmic techniques that have been developed for solving such combinatorial problems. The intent of the paper is to show how the algorithmic tools we present can be used as building blocks for higher level algorithms, and to present pointers to the literature for the reader to look up the specifics of these algorithms. We make no claim to completeness; a number of techniques have been omitted for brevity or because their chief application is not combinatorial in nature. In particular we give very little attention to parallel sorting, although sorting is used as a subroutine in a number of the algorithms we describe. We also only describe algorithms, and not lower bounds, for solving problems in parallel

    Complexity of parallel matrix computations

    AbstractWe estimate parallel complexity of several matrix computations under both Boolean and arithmetic machine models using deterministic and probabilistic approaches. Those computations include the evaluation of the inverse, the determinant, and the characteristic polynomial of a matrix. Recently, processor efficiency of the previous parallel algorithms for numerical matrix inversion has been substantially improved in (Pan and Reif, 1987), reaching optimum estimates up to within a logarithmic factor; that work, however, applies neither to the evaluation of the determinant and the characteristic polynomial nor to exact matrix inversion nor to the numerical inversion of ill-conditioned matrices. We present four new approaches to the solution of those latter problems (having several applications to combinatorial computations) in order to extend the suboptimum time and processor bounds of (Pan and Reif, 1987) to the case of computing the inverse, determinant, and characteristic polynomial of an arbitrary integer input matrix. In addition, processor efficient algorithms using polylogarithmic parallel time are devised for some other matrix computations, such as triangular and QR-factorizations of a matrix and its reduction to Hessenberg form

    qTorch: The Quantum Tensor Contraction Handler

    Classical simulation of quantum computation is necessary for studying the numerical behavior of quantum algorithms, as there does not yet exist a large viable quantum computer on which to perform numerical tests. Tensor network (TN) contraction is an algorithmic method that can efficiently simulate some quantum circuits, often greatly reducing the computational cost over methods that simulate the full Hilbert space. In this study we implement a tensor network contraction program for simulating quantum circuits using multi-core compute nodes. We show simulation results for the Max-Cut problem on 3- through 7-regular graphs using the quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA), successfully simulating up to 100 qubits. We test two different methods for generating the ordering of tensor index contractions: one is based on the tree decomposition of the line graph, while the other generates ordering using a straight-forward stochastic scheme. Through studying instances of QAOA circuits, we show the expected result that as the treewidth of the quantum circuit's line graph decreases, TN contraction becomes significantly more efficient than simulating the whole Hilbert space. The results in this work suggest that tensor contraction methods are superior only when simulating Max-Cut/QAOA with graphs of regularities approximately five and below. Insight into this point of equal computational cost helps one determine which simulation method will be more efficient for a given quantum circuit. The stochastic contraction method outperforms the line graph based method only when the time to calculate a reasonable tree decomposition is prohibitively expensive. Finally, we release our software package, qTorch (Quantum TensOR Contraction Handler), intended for general quantum circuit simulation.Comment: 21 pages, 8 figure

    NC Algorithms for Weighted Planar Perfect Matching and Related Problems

    Consider a planar graph G=(V,E) with polynomially bounded edge weight function w:E -> [0, poly(n)]. The main results of this paper are NC algorithms for finding minimum weight perfect matching in G. In order to solve this problems we develop a new relatively simple but versatile framework that is combinatorial in spirit. It handles the combinatorial structure of matchings directly and needs to only know weights of appropriately defined matchings from algebraic subroutines. Moreover, using novel planarity preserving reductions, we show how to find: maximum weight matching in G when G is bipartite; maximum multiple-source multiple-sink flow in G where c:E -> [1, poly(n)] is a polynomially bounded edge capacity function; minimum weight f-factor in G where f:V -> [1, poly(n)]; min-cost flow in G where c:E -> [1, poly(n)] is a polynomially bounded edge capacity function and b:V -> [1, poly(n)] is a polynomially bounded vertex demand function. There have been no known NC algorithms for these problems previously
