Biophotonic Tools in Cell and Tissue Diagnostics.
In order to maintain the rapid advance of biophotonics in the U.S. and enhance our competitiveness worldwide, key measurement tools must be in place. As part of a wide-reaching effort to improve the U.S. technology base, the National Institute of Standards and Technology sponsored a workshop titled "Biophotonic tools for cell and tissue diagnostics." The workshop focused on diagnostic techniques involving the interaction between biological systems and photons. Through invited presentations by industry representatives and panel discussion, near- and far-term measurement needs were evaluated. As a result of this workshop, this document has been prepared on the measurement tools needed for biophotonic cell and tissue diagnostics. This will become a part of the larger measurement road-mapping effort to be presented to the Nation as an assessment of the U.S. Measurement System. The information will be used to highlight measurement needs to the community and to facilitate solutions

Combination of high-resolution cone beam computed tomography and metal artefact reduction software: a new image fusion technique for evaluating intracranial stent apposition after aneurysm treatment.
We introduce a new imaging technique to improve visualisation of stent apposition after endovascular treatment of brain aneurysms employing high-resolution cone beam CT and three-dimensional digital subtraction angiography. After performing a stent-assisted coil embolisation of brain aneurysm, the image datasets were processed with a metal artefact reduction software followed by the automated image fusion programmes. Two patients who underwent aneurysm coiling using a Neuroform stent were evaluated. The reconstructed 3D images showed a detailed structure of the stent struts and identified malappositions of the deployed stents. Case 1 showed good apposition on the outer curvature side of the carotid siphon, while the inner curvature side showed prominent malapposition. Case 2, with multiple aneurysms, showed good apposition on both outer and inner curvature sides, although inward prolapse of the struts was observed. This new imaging technique may help evaluate stent apposition after the endovascular aneurysm treatment
Prospects for Theranostics in Neurosurgical Imaging: Empowering Confocal Laser Endomicroscopy Diagnostics via Deep Learning
Confocal laser endomicroscopy (CLE) is an advanced optical fluorescence
imaging technology that has the potential to increase intraoperative precision,
extend resection, and tailor surgery for malignant invasive brain tumors
because of its subcellular dimension resolution. Despite its promising
diagnostic potential, interpreting the gray tone fluorescence images can be
difficult for untrained users. In this review, we provide a detailed
description of bioinformatical analysis methodology of CLE images that begins
to assist the neurosurgeon and pathologist to rapidly connect on-the-fly
intraoperative imaging, pathology, and surgical observation into a
conclusionary system within the concept of theranostics. We present an overview
and discuss deep learning models for automatic detection of the diagnostic CLE
images and discuss various training regimes and ensemble modeling effect on the
power of deep learning predictive models. Two major approaches reviewed in this
paper include the models that can automatically classify CLE images into
diagnostic/nondiagnostic, glioma/nonglioma, tumor/injury/normal categories and
models that can localize histological features on the CLE images using weakly
supervised methods. We also briefly review advances in the deep learning
approaches used for CLE image analysis in other organs. Significant advances in
speed and precision of automated diagnostic frame selection would augment the
diagnostic potential of CLE, improve operative workflow and integration into
brain tumor surgery. Such technology and bioinformatics analytics lend
themselves to improved precision, personalization, and theranostics in brain
tumor treatment.Comment: See the final version published in Frontiers in Oncology here:

Statistical Uncertainties in Temperature Diagnostics for Hot Coronal Plasma Using the ASCA SIS
Statistical uncertainties in determining the temperatures of hot (0.5 keV to
10 keV) coronal plasmas are investigated. The statistical precision of various
spectral temperature diagnostics is established by analyzing synthetic ASCA
Solid-state Imaging Spectrometer (SIS) CCD spectra. The diagnostics considered
are the ratio of hydrogen-like to helium-like line complexes of
elements, line-free portions of the continuum, and the entire spectrum. While
fits to the entire spectrum yield the highest statistical precision, it is
argued that fits to the line-free continuum are less susceptible to atomic data
uncertainties but lead to a modest increase in statistical uncertainty over
full spectral fits. Temperatures deduced from line ratios can have similar
accuracy but only over a narrow range of temperatures. Convenient estimates of
statistical accuracies for the various temperature diagnostics are provided
which may be used in planning ASCA SIS observations.Comment: postscript file of 8 pages+3 figures; 4 files tarred, compressed and

Rethinking Responsibility for Patient Injury: Accelerated-Compensation Events, a Malpractice and Quality Reform Ripe for a Test
The accelerated-compensation events (ACE) approach in medical malpractice reform was studied. Reforms based on ACE best address the twin goals of making compensation more equitable and avoiding bad outcomes in medical care

Diagnostics for magnetically confined high-temperature plasmas
During the last 20 years, magnetically confined laboratory plasmas of steadily increasing temperatures and densities have been obtained, most notably in tokamak configurations, and now approach the conditions necessary to sustain a fusion reaction. Even more important to the goal of understanding the physics of such systems, remarkable advances in plasma diagnostics, the techniques for determining the properties of such plasmas, have accompanied these developments. More parameters can be determined with greater accuracy and finer spatial and temporal resolution. The magnetic configuration, the primary local thermodynamic quantities (density, temperature, and drift velocity), and other necessary quantities can now be measured with sufficient accuracy to determine particle and energy fluxes within the plasma and to characterize the basic transport processes. These plasmas are far from thermodynamic equilibrium. This deviation manifests itself in a variety of instabilities on several spatial and temporal scales, many of which are aptly described as turbulence. Many aspects of the turbulence can also be characterized. This article reviews the current state of diagnostics from an epistemoiogical perspective: the capabilities and limitations for measuring each important physical quantity are presented.Physic
An assessment of NASA master directory/catalog interoperability for interdisciplinary study of the global water cycle
The most important issue facing science is understanding global change; the causes, the processes involved and their consequences. The key to success in this massive Earth science research effort will depend on efficient identification and access to the most data available across the atmospheric, oceanographic, and land sciences. Current mechanisms used by earth scientists for accessing these data fall far short of meeting this need. Scientists must as a result frequently rely on a priori knowledge and informal person to person networks to find relevant data. The Master Directory/Catalog Interoperability Program (MC/CI) undertaken by NASA is an important step in overcoming these problems. The stated goal of the MD project is to enable researchers to efficiently identify, locate, and obtain access to space and Earth science data
