    Proceedings of SIRM 2023 - The 15th European Conference on Rotordynamics

    It was our great honor and pleasure to host the SIRM Conference after 2003 and 2011 for the third time in Darmstadt. Rotordynamics covers a huge variety of different applications and challenges which are all in the scope of this conference. The conference was opened with a keynote lecture given by Rainer Nordmann, one of the three founders of SIRM “Schwingungen in rotierenden Maschinen”. In total 53 papers passed our strict review process and were presented. This impressively shows that rotordynamics is relevant as ever. These contributions cover a very wide spectrum of session topics: fluid bearings and seals; air foil bearings; magnetic bearings; rotor blade interaction; rotor fluid interactions; unbalance and balancing; vibrations in turbomachines; vibration control; instability; electrical machines; monitoring, identification and diagnosis; advanced numerical tools and nonlinearities as well as general rotordynamics. The international character of the conference has been significantly enhanced by the Scientific Board since the 14th SIRM resulting on one hand in an expanded Scientific Committee which meanwhile consists of 31 members from 13 different European countries and on the other hand in the new name “European Conference on Rotordynamics”. This new international profile has also been emphasized by participants of the 15th SIRM coming from 17 different countries out of three continents. We experienced a vital discussion and dialogue between industry and academia at the conference where roughly one third of the papers were presented by industry and two thirds by academia being an excellent basis to follow a bidirectional transfer what we call xchange at Technical University of Darmstadt. At this point we also want to give our special thanks to the eleven industry sponsors for their great support of the conference.     Machine learning for the sustainable energy transition: a data-driven perspective along the value chain from manufacturing to energy conversion

    According to the special report Global Warming of 1.5 °C of the IPCC, climate action is not only necessary but more than ever urgent. The world is witnessing rising sea levels, heat waves, events of flooding, droughts, and desertification resulting in the loss of lives and damage to livelihoods, especially in countries of the Global South. To mitigate climate change and commit to the Paris agreement, it is of the uttermost importance to reduce greenhouse gas emissions coming from the most emitting sector, namely the energy sector. To this end, large-scale penetration of renewable energy systems into the energy market is crucial for the energy transition toward a sustainable future by replacing fossil fuels and improving access to energy with socio-economic benefits. With the advent of Industry 4.0, Internet of Things technologies have been increasingly applied to the energy sector introducing the concept of smart grid or, more in general, Internet of Energy. These paradigms are steering the energy sector towards more efficient, reliable, flexible, resilient, safe, and sustainable solutions with huge environmental and social potential benefits. To realize these concepts, new information technologies are required, and among the most promising possibilities are Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning which in many countries have already revolutionized the energy industry. This thesis presents different Machine Learning algorithms and methods for the implementation of new strategies to make renewable energy systems more efficient and reliable. It presents various learning algorithms, highlighting their advantages and limits, and evaluating their application for different tasks in the energy context. In addition, different techniques are presented for the preprocessing and cleaning of time series, nowadays collected by sensor networks mounted on every renewable energy system. With the possibility to install large numbers of sensors that collect vast amounts of time series, it is vital to detect and remove irrelevant, redundant, or noisy features, and alleviate the curse of dimensionality, thus improving the interpretability of predictive models, speeding up their learning process, and enhancing their generalization properties. Therefore, this thesis discussed the importance of dimensionality reduction in sensor networks mounted on renewable energy systems and, to this end, presents two novel unsupervised algorithms. The first approach maps time series in the network domain through visibility graphs and uses a community detection algorithm to identify clusters of similar time series and select representative parameters. This method can group both homogeneous and heterogeneous physical parameters, even when related to different functional areas of a system. The second approach proposes the Combined Predictive Power Score, a method for feature selection with a multivariate formulation that explores multiple sub-sets of expanding variables and identifies the combination of features with the highest predictive power over specified target variables. This method proposes a selection algorithm for the optimal combination of variables that converges to the smallest set of predictors with the highest predictive power. Once the combination of variables is identified, the most relevant parameters in a sensor network can be selected to perform dimensionality reduction. Data-driven methods open the possibility to support strategic decision-making, resulting in a reduction of Operation & Maintenance costs, machine faults, repair stops, and spare parts inventory size. Therefore, this thesis presents two approaches in the context of predictive maintenance to improve the lifetime and efficiency of the equipment, based on anomaly detection algorithms. The first approach proposes an anomaly detection model based on Principal Component Analysis that is robust to false alarms, can isolate anomalous conditions, and can anticipate equipment failures. The second approach has at its core a neural architecture, namely a Graph Convolutional Autoencoder, which models the sensor network as a dynamical functional graph by simultaneously considering the information content of individual sensor measurements (graph node features) and the nonlinear correlations existing between all pairs of sensors (graph edges). The proposed neural architecture can capture hidden anomalies even when the turbine continues to deliver the power requested by the grid and can anticipate equipment failures. Since the model is unsupervised and completely data-driven, this approach can be applied to any wind turbine equipped with a SCADA system. When it comes to renewable energies, the unschedulable uncertainty due to their intermittent nature represents an obstacle to the reliability and stability of energy grids, especially when dealing with large-scale integration. Nevertheless, these challenges can be alleviated if the natural sources or the power output of renewable energy systems can be forecasted accurately, allowing power system operators to plan optimal power management strategies to balance the dispatch between intermittent power generations and the load demand. To this end, this thesis proposes a multi-modal spatio-temporal neural network for multi-horizon wind power forecasting. In particular, the model combines high-resolution Numerical Weather Prediction forecast maps with turbine-level SCADA data and explores how meteorological variables on different spatial scales together with the turbines' internal operating conditions impact wind power forecasts. The world is undergoing a third energy transition with the main goal to tackle global climate change through decarbonization of the energy supply and consumption patterns. This is not only possible thanks to global cooperation and agreements between parties, power generation systems advancements, and Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence technologies but also necessary to prevent the severe and irreversible consequences of climate change that are threatening life on the planet as we know it. This thesis is intended as a reference for researchers that want to contribute to the sustainable energy transition and are approaching the field of Artificial Intelligence in the context of renewable energy systems

    A Tale of Two Approaches: Comparing Top-Down and Bottom-Up Strategies for Analyzing and Visualizing High-Dimensional Data

    The proliferation of high-throughput and sensory technologies in various fields has led to a considerable increase in data volume, complexity, and diversity. Traditional data storage, analysis, and visualization methods are struggling to keep pace with the growth of modern data sets, necessitating innovative approaches to overcome the challenges of managing, analyzing, and visualizing data across various disciplines. One such approach is utilizing novel storage media, such as deoxyribonucleic acid~(DNA), which presents efficient, stable, compact, and energy-saving storage option. Researchers are exploring the potential use of DNA as a storage medium for long-term storage of significant cultural and scientific materials. In addition to novel storage media, scientists are also focussing on developing new techniques that can integrate multiple data modalities and leverage machine learning algorithms to identify complex relationships and patterns in vast data sets. These newly-developed data management and analysis approaches have the potential to unlock previously unknown insights into various phenomena and to facilitate more effective translation of basic research findings to practical and clinical applications. Addressing these challenges necessitates different problem-solving approaches. Researchers are developing novel tools and techniques that require different viewpoints. Top-down and bottom-up approaches are essential techniques that offer valuable perspectives for managing, analyzing, and visualizing complex high-dimensional multi-modal data sets. This cumulative dissertation explores the challenges associated with handling such data and highlights top-down, bottom-up, and integrated approaches that are being developed to manage, analyze, and visualize this data. The work is conceptualized in two parts, each reflecting the two problem-solving approaches and their uses in published studies. The proposed work showcases the importance of understanding both approaches, the steps of reasoning about the problem within them, and their concretization and application in various domains

    A Computational Framework for Efficient Reliability Analysis of Complex Networks

    With the growing scale and complexity of modern infrastructure networks comes the challenge of developing efficient and dependable methods for analysing their reliability. Special attention must be given to potential network interdependencies as disregarding these can lead to catastrophic failures. Furthermore, it is of paramount importance to properly treat all uncertainties. The survival signature is a recent development built to effectively analyse complex networks that far exceeds standard techniques in several important areas. Its most distinguishing feature is the complete separation of system structure from probabilistic information. Because of this, it is possible to take into account a variety of component failure phenomena such as dependencies, common causes of failure, and imprecise probabilities without reevaluating the network structure. This cumulative dissertation presents several key improvements to the survival signature ecosystem focused on the structural evaluation of the system as well as the modelling of component failures. A new method is presented in which (inter)-dependencies between components and networks are modelled using vine copulas. Furthermore, aleatory and epistemic uncertainties are included by applying probability boxes and imprecise copulas. By leveraging the large number of available copula families it is possible to account for varying dependent effects. The graph-based design of vine copulas synergizes well with the typical descriptions of network topologies. The proposed method is tested on a challenging scenario using the IEEE reliability test system, demonstrating its usefulness and emphasizing the ability to represent complicated scenarios with a range of dependent failure modes. The numerical effort required to analytically compute the survival signature is prohibitive for large complex systems. This work presents two methods for the approximation of the survival signature. In the first approach system configurations of low interest are excluded using percolation theory, while the remaining parts of the signature are estimated by Monte Carlo simulation. The method is able to accurately approximate the survival signature with very small errors while drastically reducing computational demand. Several simple test systems, as well as two real-world situations, are used to show the accuracy and performance. However, with increasing network size and complexity this technique also reaches its limits. A second method is presented where the numerical demand is further reduced. Here, instead of approximating the whole survival signature only a few strategically selected values are computed using Monte Carlo simulation and used to build a surrogate model based on normalized radial basis functions. The uncertainty resulting from the approximation of the data points is then propagated through an interval predictor model which estimates bounds for the remaining survival signature values. This imprecise model provides bounds on the survival signature and therefore the network reliability. Because a few data points are sufficient to build the interval predictor model it allows for even larger systems to be analysed. With the rising complexity of not just the system but also the individual components themselves comes the need for the components to be modelled as subsystems in a system-of-systems approach. A study is presented, where a previously developed framework for resilience decision-making is adapted to multidimensional scenarios in which the subsystems are represented as survival signatures. The survival signature of the subsystems can be computed ahead of the resilience analysis due to the inherent separation of structural information. This enables efficient analysis in which the failure rates of subsystems for various resilience-enhancing endowments are calculated directly from the survival function without reevaluating the system structure. In addition to the advancements in the field of survival signature, this work also presents a new framework for uncertainty quantification developed as a package in the Julia programming language called UncertaintyQuantification.jl. Julia is a modern high-level dynamic programming language that is ideal for applications such as data analysis and scientific computing. UncertaintyQuantification.jl was built from the ground up to be generalised and versatile while remaining simple to use. The framework is in constant development and its goal is to become a toolbox encompassing state-of-the-art algorithms from all fields of uncertainty quantification and to serve as a valuable tool for both research and industry. UncertaintyQuantification.jl currently includes simulation-based reliability analysis utilising a wide range of sampling schemes, local and global sensitivity analysis, and surrogate modelling methodologies

    A Survey on Explainable Anomaly Detection

    In the past two decades, most research on anomaly detection has focused on improving the accuracy of the detection, while largely ignoring the explainability of the corresponding methods and thus leaving the explanation of outcomes to practitioners. As anomaly detection algorithms are increasingly used in safety-critical domains, providing explanations for the high-stakes decisions made in those domains has become an ethical and regulatory requirement. Therefore, this work provides a comprehensive and structured survey on state-of-the-art explainable anomaly detection techniques.     K-Means and Alternative Clustering Methods in Modern Power Systems

    As power systems evolve by integrating renewable energy sources, distributed generation, and electric vehicles, the complexity of managing these systems increases. With the increase in data accessibility and advancements in computational capabilities, clustering algorithms, including K-means, are becoming essential tools for researchers in analyzing, optimizing, and modernizing power systems. This paper presents a comprehensive review of over 440 articles published through 2022, emphasizing the application of K-means clustering, a widely recognized and frequently used algorithm, along with its alternative clustering methods within modern power systems. The main contributions of this study include a bibliometric analysis to understand the historical development and wide-ranging applications of K-means clustering in power systems. This research also thoroughly examines K-means, its various variants, potential limitations, and advantages. Furthermore, the study explores alternative clustering algorithms that can complete or substitute K-means. Some prominent examples include K-medoids, Time-series K-means, BIRCH, Bayesian clustering, HDBSCAN, CLIQUE, SPECTRAL, SOMs, TICC, and swarm-based methods, broadening the understanding and applications of clustering methodologies in modern power systems. The paper highlights the wide-ranging applications of these techniques, from load forecasting and fault detection to power quality analysis and system security assessment. Throughout the examination, it has been observed that the number of publications employing clustering algorithms within modern power systems is following an exponential upward trend. This emphasizes the necessity for professionals to understand various clustering methods, including their benefits and potential challenges, to incorporate the most suitable ones into their studies

The present book, “Modeling and Simulation in Engineering I, 2022”, contains 14 papers accepted after peer review by recognized specialists in the field. The papers address different topics occurring in engineering, such as ferrofluid transport in magnetic fields, non-fractal signal analysis, fractional derivatives, applications of swarm algorithms and evolutionary algorithms (genetic algorithms), inverse methods for inverse problems, numerical analysis of heat and mass transfer, numerical solutions for fractional differential equations, Kriging modelling, theory of the modelling methodology, and artificial neural networks for fault diagnosis in electric circuits.     Neural networks in control engineering

    The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the viability of integrating neural networks into control structures. These networks are an attempt to create artificial intelligent systems with the ability to learn and remember. They mathematically model the biological structure of the brain and consist of a large number of simple interconnected processing units emulating brain cells. Due to the highly parallel and consequently computationally expensive nature of these networks, intensive research in this field has only become feasible due to the availability of powerful personal computers in recent years. Consequently, attempts at exploiting the attractive learning and nonlinear optimization characteristics of neural networks have been made in most fields of science and engineering, including process control. The control structures suggested in the literature for the inclusion of neural networks in control applications can be divided into four major classes. The first class includes approaches in which the network forms part of an adaptive mechanism which modulates the structure or parameters of the controller. In the second class the network forms part of the control loop and replaces the conventional control block, thus leading to a pure neural network control law. The third class consists of topologies in which neural networks are used to produce models of the system which are then utilized in the control structure, whilst the fourth category includes suggestions which are specific to the problem or system structure and not suitable for a generic neural network-based-approach to control problems. Although several of these approaches show promising results, only model based structures are evaluated in this thesis. This is due to the fact that many of the topologies in other classes require system estimation to produce the desired network output during training, whereas the training data for network models is obtained directly by sampling the system input(s) and output(s). Furthermore, many suggested structures lack the mathematical motivation to consider them for a general structure, whilst the neural network model topologies form natural extensions of their linear model based origins. Since it is impractical and often impossible to collect sufficient training data prior to implementing the neural network based control structure, the network models have to be suited to on-line training during operation. This limits the choice of network topologies for models to those that can be trained on a sample by sample basis (pattern learning) and furthermore are capable of learning even when the variation in training data is relatively slow as is the case for most controlled dynamic systems. A study of feedforward topologies (one of the main classes of networks) shows that the multilayer perceptron network with its backpropagation training is well suited to model nonlinear mappings but fails to learn and generalize when subjected to slow varying training data. This is due to the global input interpretation of this structure, in which any input affects all hidden nodes such that no effective partitioning of the input space can be achieved. This problem is overcome in a less flexible feedforward structure, known as regular Gaussian network. In this network, the response of each hidden node is limited to a -sphere around its center and these centers are fixed in a uniform distribution over the entire input space. Each input to such a network is therefore interpreted locally and only effects nodes with their centers in close proximity. A deficiency common to all feedforward networks, when considered as models for dynamic systems, is their inability to conserve previous outputs and states for future predictions. Since this absence of dynamic capability requires the user to identify the order of the system prior to training and is therefore not entirely self-learning, more advanced network topologies are investigated. The most versatile of these structures, known as a fully recurrent network, re-uses the previous state of each of its nodes for subsequent outputs. However, despite its superior modelling capability, the tests performed using the Williams and Zipser training algorithm show that such structures often fail to converge and require excessive computing power and time, when increased in size. Despite its rigid structure and lack of dynamic capability, the regular Gaussian network produces the most reliable and robust models and was therefore selected for the evaluations in this study. To overcome the network initialization problem, found when using a pure neural network model, a combination structure· _in which the network operates in parallel with a mathematical model is suggested. This approach allows the controller to be implemented without any prior network training and initially relies purely on the mathematical model, much like conventional approaches. The network portion is then trained during on-line operation in order to improve the model. Once trained, the enhanced model can be used to improve the system response, since model exactness plays an important role in the control action achievable with model based structures. The applicability of control structures based on neural network models is evaluated by comparing the performance of two network approaches to that of a linear structure, using a simulation of a nonlinear tank system. The first network controller is developed from the internal model control (IMC) structure, which includes a forward and inverse model of the system to be controlled. Both models can be replaced by a combination of mathematical and neural topologies, the network portion of which is trained on-line to compensate for the discrepancies between the linear model _ and nonlinear system. Since the network has no dynamic ·capacity, .former system outputs are used as inputs to the forward and inverse model. Due to this direct feedback, the trained structure can be tuned to perform within limits not achievable using a conventional linear system. As mentioned previously the IMC structure uses both forward and inverse models. Since the control law requires that these models are exact inverses, an iterative inversion algorithm has to be used to improve the values produced by the inverse combination model. Due to deadtimes and right-half-plane zeroes, many systems are furthermore not directly invertible. Whilst such unstable elements can be removed from mathematical models, the inverse network is trained directly from the forward model and can not be compensated. These problems could be overcome by a control structure for which only a forward model is required. The neural predictive controller (NPC) presents such a topology. Based on the optimal control philosophy, this structure uses a model to predict several future outputs. The errors between these and the desired output are then collected to form the cost function, which may also include other factors such as the magnitude of the change in input. The input value that optimally fulfils all the objectives used to formulate the cost function, can then be found by locating its minimum. Since the model in this structure includes a neural network, the optimization can not be formulated in a closed mathematical form and has to be performed using a numerical method. For the NPC topology, as for the neural network IMC structure, former system outputs are fed back to the model and again the trained network approach produces results not achievable with a linear model. Due to the single network approach, the NPC topology furthermore overcomes the limitations described for the neural network IMC structure and can be extended to include multivariable systems. This study shows that the nonlinear modelling capability of neural networks can be exploited to produce learning control structures with improved responses for nonlinear systems. Many of the difficulties described are due to the computational burden of these networks and associated algorithms. These are likely to become less significant due to the rapid development in computer technology and advances in neural network hardware. Although neural network based control structures are unlikely to replace the well understood linear topologies, which are adequate for the majority of applications, they might present a practical alternative where (due to nonlinearity or modelling errors) the conventional controller can not achieve the required control action
