    Model Updating for Large-Scale Railway Bridge Using Grey Wolf Algorithm and Genetic Alghorithms

    This paper proposes a novel hybrid algorithm to deal with an inverse problem of a large-scale truss bridge. Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO) Algorithm is a well-known and widely applied metaheuristic algorithm. Nevertheless, GWO has two major drawbacks. First, this algorithm depends crucially on the positions of the leading Wolf. If the position of the leaderis far from the best solution, the obtained results are poor. On the other hand, GWO does not own capacities to improve the quality of new generations if elements are trapped into local minima. To remedy the shortcomings of GWO, we propose a hybrid algorithm combining GWO with Genetic Algorithm (GA), termed HGWO-GA. This proposed method contains two key features (1) based on crossover and mutation capacities, GA is first utilized to generate the high-quality elements (2) after that, the optimization capacity of GWO is employed to seek the optimal solutions. To assess the effectiveness of the proposed approach, a large-scale truss bridge is employed for model updating. The obtained results show that HGWO-GA not only provides a good agreement between numerical and experimental results but also outperforms traditional GWO in terms of accuracy

    Boundary Strategy for Optimization-based Structural Damage Detection Problem using Metaheuristic Algorithms

    The present paper proposes a new strategy namely Boundary Strategy (BS) in the process of optimization-based damage detection using metaheuristic algorithms. This strategy gradually neutralizes the effects of structural elements that are healthy in the optimization process. BS causes the optimization method to find the optimum solution better than conventional methods that do not use the proposed BS. This technique improves both aspects of the accuracy and convergence speed of the algorithms in identifying and quantifying the damage. To evaluate the performance of the developed strategy, a new damage-sensitive cost function, which is defined based on vibration data of the structure, is optimized utilizing the Shuffled Shepherd Optimization Algorithm (SSOA). Different examples including truss, beam, and frame are investigated numerically in order to indicate the applicability of the proposed technique. The proposed approach is also applied to other well-known optimization algorithms including TLBO, GWO, and MFO. The obtained results illustrate that the proposed method improves the performance of the utilized algorithms in identifying and quantifying of the damaged elements, even for noise-contaminated data

    The Application of PSO in Structural Damage Detection: An Analysis of the Previously Released Publications (2005–2020)

    The structural health monitoring (SHM) approach plays a key role not only in structural engineering but also in other various engineering disciplines by evaluating the safety and performance monitoring of the structures. The structural damage detection methods could be regarded as the core of SHM strategies. That is because the early detection of the damages and measures to be taken to repair and replace the damaged members with healthy ones could lead to economic advantages and would prevent human disasters. The optimization-based methods are one of the most popular techniques for damage detection. Using these methods, an objective function is minimized by an optimization algorithm during an iterative procedure. The performance of optimization algorithms has a significant impact on the accuracy of damage identification methodology. Hence, a wide variety of algorithms are employed to address optimization-based damage detection problems. Among different algorithms, the particle swarm optimization (PSO) approach has been of the most popular ones. PSO was initially proposed by Kennedy and Eberhart in 1995, and different variants were developed to improve its performance. This work investigates the objectives, methodologies, and results obtained by over 50 studies (2005-2020) in the context of the structural damage detection using PSO and its variants. Then, several important open research questions are highlighted. The paper also provides insights on the frequently used methodologies based on PSO, the computational time, and the accuracy of the existing methodologies

    A New Optimization Algorithm Based on Search and Rescue Operations

    [EN] In this paper, a new optimization algorithm called the search and rescue optimization algorithm (SAR) is proposed for solving single-objective continuous optimization problems. SAR is inspired by the explorations carried out by humans during search and rescue operations. The performance of SAR was evaluated on fifty-five optimization functions including a set of classic benchmark functions and a set of modern CEC 2013 benchmark functions from the literature. The obtained results were compared with twelve optimization algorithms including well-known optimization algorithms, recent variants of GA, DE, CMA-ES, and PSO, and recent metaheuristic algorithms. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used for some of the comparisons, and the convergence behavior of SAR was investigated. The statistical results indicated SAR is highly competitive with the compared algorithms. Also, in order to evaluate the application of SAR on real-world optimization problems, it was applied to three engineering design problems, and the results revealed that SAR is able to find more accurate solutions with fewer function evaluations in comparison with the other existing algorithms.     Damage Detection Using a Graph-based Adaptive Threshold for Modal Strain Energy and Improved Water Strider Algorithm

    Damage detection through an inverse optimization problem has been investigated by many researchers. Recently, Modal Strain Energy (MSE) has been utilized as an index (MSEBI) for damage localization that serves to guide the optimization. This guided approach considerably reduces the computational cost and increases the accuracy of optimization. Although this index mostly exhibits an acceptable performance, it fails to find some damaged elements' locations in some cases. The aim of this paper is twofold. Firstly, a Graph-based Adaptive Threshold (GAT) is proposed to identify some of those elements that are not detected by basic MSEBI. GAT relies on the concepts from graph theory and MSE working as a simple anomaly detection technique. Secondly, an Improved version of the Water Strider Algorithm (IWSA) is introduced, applied to the damage detection problems with incomplete modal data and noise-contaminated inputs. Several optimization algorithms, including the newly-established Water Strider Algorithm (WSA), are utilized to test the proposed method. The investigations on several damage detection problems demonstrate the GAT and IWSA's satisfactory performance compared to the previous methods

    Optimal Design of Steel Curved Roof Frames by Enhanced Vibrating Particles System Algorithm

    The paper presents an optimal design of steel curved roof frames with its roof being part of a circular arc. The elements of frames are tapered I-section members. In the objective function for optimization, two factors affecting the weight of frames are considered simultaneously. First, the roof slope angle as an effective variable on the values of the structural loading and second, the cross-section of members that are considered as continuous and discrete variables, respectively. In the range of 3 to 70 degrees, the optimum range of roof slope angles for steel curved roof frames, as well as precise value of the best roof slope angle, will be reported. Enhanced Vibrating Particles System (EVPS) algorithm is utilized for the optimal design of steel curved roof frames with tapered members. The performance and efficiency of the EVPS algorithm is compared with six other recently developed optimization algorithms including VPS, GWO, HS, SSA, ECBO and GOA algorithms. The effectiveness and performance of EVPS algorithm is proven. Frames design are performed using ANSI/AISC 360-05 specifications which strength, displacement and stability constraints are imposed on the frames

    Ensemble of four metaheuristic using a weighted sum technique for aircraft wing design

    Recently, metaheuristics (MHs) have become increasingly popular in real-world engineering applications such as in the design of airframes structures and aeroelastic designs owing to its simple, flexible, and efficient nature. In this study, a novel hybrid algorithm is termed as Ensemble of Genetic algorithm, Grey wolf optimizer, Water cycle algorithm and Population base increment learningusing Weighted sum (E-GGWP-W), based on the successive archive methodology of the weighted population has been proposed to solve the aircraft composite wing design problem. Four distinguished algorithms viz. a Genetic algorithm (GA), a Grey wolf optimizer (GWO), a Water cycle algorithm (WCA), and Population base increment learning (PBIL) were used as ingredients of the proposed algorithm. The considered wing design problem is posed for overall weight minimization subject to several aeroelastic and structural constraints along with multiple discrete design variables to ascertain its viability for real-world applications. The algorithms are validated through the standard test functions of the CEC-RW-2020 test suite and composite Goland wing aeroelastic optimization. To check the performance, the proposed algorithm is contrasted with eight well established and newly developed MHs. Finally, a statistical analysis is done by performing Friedman’s rank test and allocating respective ranks to the algorithms. Based on the outcome, ithas been observed that the suggested algorithm outperforms the others

    A New Enhanced Hybrid Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO) Combined with Elephant Herding Optimization (EHO) Algorithm for Engineering Optimization

    Although the exploitation of GWO advances sharply, it has limitations for continuous implementing exploration. On the other hand, the EHO algorithm easily has shown its capability to prevent local optima. For hybridization and by considering the advantages of GWO and the abilities of EHO, it would be impressive to combine these two algorithms. In this respect, the exploitation and exploration performances and the convergence speed of the GWO algorithm are improved by combining it with the EHO algorithm. Therefore, this paper proposes a new hybrid Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO) combined with Elephant Herding Optimization (EHO) algorithm. Twenty-three benchmark mathematical optimization challenges and six constrained engineering challenges are used to validate the performance of the suggested GWOEHO compared to both the original GWO and EHO algorithms and some other well-known optimization algorithms. Wilcoxon's rank-sum test outcomes revealed that GWOEHO outperforms others in most function minimization. The results also proved that the convergence speed of GWOEHO is faster than the original algorithms
