A Comprehensive Review of Bio-Inspired Optimization Algorithms Including Applications in Microelectronics and Nanophotonics

The application of artificial intelligence in everyday life is becoming all-pervasive and unavoidable. Within that vast field, a special place belongs to biomimetic/bio-inspired algorithms for multiparameter optimization, which find their use in a large number of areas. Novel methods and advances are being published at an accelerated pace. Because of that, in spite of the fact that there are a lot of surveys and reviews in the field, they quickly become dated. Thus, it is of importance to keep pace with the current developments. In this review, we first consider a possible classification of bio-inspired multiparameter optimization methods because papers dedicated to that area are relatively scarce and often contradictory. We proceed by describing in some detail some more prominent approaches, as well as those most recently published. Finally, we consider the use of biomimetic algorithms in two related wide fields, namely microelectronics (including circuit design optimization) and nanophotonics (including inverse design of structures such as photonic crystals, nanoplasmonic configurations and metamaterials). We attempted to keep this broad survey self-contained so it can be of use not only to scholars in the related fields, but also to all those interested in the latest developments in this attractive area

Energy-efficient resource allocation scheme based on enhanced flower pollination algorithm for cloud computing data center

Cloud Computing (CC) has rapidly emerged as a successful paradigm for providing ICT infrastructure. Efficient and environmental-friendly resource allocation mechanisms, responsible for allocatinpg Cloud data center resources to execute user applications in the form of requests are undoubtedly required. One of the promising Nature-Inspired techniques for addressing virtualization, consolidation and energyaware problems is the Flower Pollination Algorithm (FPA). However, FPA suffers from entrapment and its static control parameters cannot maintain a balance between local and global search which could also lead to high energy consumption and inadequate resource utilization. This research developed an enhanced FPA-based energy efficient resource allocation scheme for Cloud data center which provides efficient resource utilization and energy efficiency with less probable Service Level Agreement (SLA) violations. Firstly, an Enhanced Flower Pollination Algorithm for Energy-Efficient Virtual Machine Placement (EFPA-EEVMP) was developed. In this algorithm, a Dynamic Switching Probability (DSP) strategy was adopted to balance the local and global search space in FPA used to minimize the energy consumption and maximize resource utilization. Secondly, Multi-Objective Hybrid Flower Pollination Resource Consolidation (MOH-FPRC) algorithm was developed. In this algorithm, Local Neighborhood Search (LNS) and Pareto optimisation strategies were combined with Clustering algorithm to avoid local trapping and address Cloud service providers conflicting objectives such as energy consumption and SLA violation. Lastly, Energy-Aware Multi-Cloud Flower Pollination Optimization (EAM-FPO) scheme was developed for distributed Multi-Cloud data center environment. In this scheme, Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) and migration controller were utilised to obtain the optimal solution in a larger search space of the CC environment. The scheme was tested on MultiRecCloudSim simulator. Results of the simulation were compared with OEMACS, ACS-VMC, and EA-DP. The scheme produced outstanding performance improvement rate on the data center energy consumption by 20.5%, resource utilization by 23.9%, and SLA violation by 13.5%. The combined algorithms have reduced entrapment and maintaned balance between local and global search. Therefore, based on the findings the developed scheme has proven to be efficient in minimizing energy consumption while at the same time improving the data center resource allocation with minimum SLA violation

Mining social network data for personalisation and privacy concerns: A case study of Facebook’s Beacon

This is the post-print version of the final published paper that is available from the link below. The popular success of online social networking sites (SNS) such as Facebook is a hugely tempting resource of data mining for businesses engaged in personalised marketing. The use of personal information, willingly shared between online friends' networks intuitively appears to be a natural extension of current advertising strategies such as word-of-mouth and viral marketing. However, the use of SNS data for personalised marketing has provoked outrage amongst SNS users and radically highlighted the issue of privacy concern. This paper inverts the traditional approach to personalisation by conceptualising the limits of data mining in social networks using privacy concern as the guide. A qualitative investigation of 95 blogs containing 568 comments was collected during the failed launch of Beacon, a third party marketing initiative by Facebook. Thematic analysis resulted in the development of taxonomy of privacy concerns which offers a concrete means for online businesses to better understand SNS business landscape - especially with regard to the limits of the use and acceptance of personalised marketing in social networks

The work published in this book is related to the application of advanced signal processing in smart grids, including power quality, data management, stability and economic management in presence of renewable energy sources, energy storage systems, and electric vehicles. The distinct architecture of smart grids has prompted investigations into the use of advanced algorithms combined with signal processing methods to provide optimal results. The presented applications are focused on data management with cloud computing, power quality assessment, photovoltaic power plant control, and electrical vehicle charge stations, all supported by modern AI-based optimization methods

A Multilingual Spam Reviews Detection Based on Pre-Trained Word Embedding and Weighted Swarm Support Vector Machines

Online reviews are important information that customers seek when deciding to buy products or services. Also, organizations benefit from these reviews as essential feedback for their products or services. Such information required reliability, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic which showed a massive increase in online reviews due to quarantine and sitting at home. Not only the number of reviews was boosted but also the context and preferences during the pandemic. Therefore, spam reviewers reflect on these changes and improve their deception technique. Spam reviews usually consist of misleading, fake, or fraudulent reviews that tend to deceive customers for the purpose of making money or causing harm to other competitors. Hence, this work presents a Weighted Support Vector Machine (WSVM) and Harris Hawks Optimization (HHO) for spam review detection. The HHO works as an algorithm for optimizing hyperparameters and feature weighting. Three different language corpora have been used as datasets, namely English, Spanish, and Arabic in order to solve the multilingual problem in spam reviews. Moreover, pre-trained word embedding (BERT) has been applied alongside three-word representation methods (NGram-3, TFIDF, and One-hot encoding). Four experiments have been conducted, each focused on solving and demonstrating different aspects. In all experiments, the proposed approach showed excellent results compared with other state-ofthe- art algorithms. In other words, the WSVM-HHO achieved an accuracy of 88.163%, 71.913%, 89.565%, and 84.270%, for English, Spanish, Arabic, and Multilingual datasets, respectively. Further, a deep analysis has been conducted to investigate the context of reviews before and after the COVID-19 situation. In addition, it has been generated to create a new dataset with statistical features and merge its previous textual features for improving detection performance.Projects TED2021-129938B-I0,PID2020-113462RB-I00, PDC2022-133900-I00PID2020-115570GB-C22, granted by Ministerio Español de Ciencia e InnovaciónMCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033MCIN/AEINext GenerationEU/PRT
