This deliverable contains a description of the space-time coding algorithms to be simulated within the I-METRA project. Different families of algorithms have been selected and described in this document with the objective of evaluating their performance. One of the main objectives of the I-METRA project is to impact into the current standardisation efforts related to the introduction of Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) configurations into the High Speed Downlink and Uplink Packet Access concepts of UMTS (HSDPA and HSUPA). This required a review of the current specifications for these systems and the analysis of the impact of the potential incorporation of the selected MIMO schemes.Preprin

MAI Suppression with joint pre-distortion filtering and Transmit Diversity

    Get PDF
It is intended to specify a new pre-distortion (PD) filtering technique to be used with a RAKE Receiver, which can be used to combat the Multiple Access Interference (MAI), combined with two kinds of Transmit Diversity (TD), namely the Selective Transmit Diversity (STD) and the Space-Time Transmit Diversity (STTD) for high data rate transmissions over frequency selective Rayleigh fading channels. By pre-distorting the signals to be transmitted by the Base Station (BS) with a Minimum Variance (MV) algorithm, the orthogonality between the desired signal and all interfering signals can be improved. We combine the PD with STD and with STTD, allowing a reduction in the MAI and combating the fading. The increase in performance is achieved with a small increase in power processing in the BS, avoiding any need to increase complexity in the Mobile Station (MS)

Channel estimation and signal enhancement for DS-CDMA systems

This dissertation focuses on topics of Bayesian-based multiuser detection, space-time (S-T) transceiver design, and S-T channel parameter estimation for direct-sequence code-division multiple-access (DS-CDMA) systems. Using the Bayesian framework, various linear and simplified nonlinear multiuser detectors are proposed, and their performances are analyzed. The simplified non-linear Bayesian solutions can bridge the performance gap between sub-optimal linear multiuser detectors and the optimum multiuser detector. To further improve the system capacity and performance, S-T transceiver design approaches with complexity constraint are investigated. Novel S-T receivers of low-complexity that jointly use the temporal code-signature and the spatial signature are proposed. Our solutions, which lead to generalized near-far resistant S-T RAKE receivers, achieve better interference suppression than the existing S-T RAKE receivers. From transmitter side, we also proposed a transmit diversity (TD) technique in combination with differential detection for the DS-CDMA systems. It is shown that the proposed S-T TD scheme in combination with minimum variance distortionless response transceiver (STTD+MVDR) is near-far resistant and outperforms the conventional STTD and matched filter based (STTD+MF) transceiver scheme. Obtaining channel state information (CSI) is instrumental to optimum S-T transceiver design in wireless systems. Another major focus of this dissertation is to estimate the S-T channel parameters. We proposed an asymptotic, joint maximum likelihood (ML) method of estimating multipath channel parameters for DS-CDMA systems. An iterative estimator is proposed to further simplify the computation. Analytical and simulation results show that the iterative estimation scheme is near-far resistant for both time delays and DOAs. And it reaches the corresponding CRBs after a few iterations

Linear space-time modulation in multiple-antenna channels

    Get PDF
This thesis develops linear space–time modulation techniques for (multi-antenna) multi-input multi-output (MIMO) and multiple-input single-output (MISO) wireless channels. Transmission methods tailored for such channels have recently emerged in a number of current and upcoming standards, in particular in 3G and "beyond 3G" wireless systems. Here, these transmission concepts are approached primarily from a signal processing perspective. The introduction part of the thesis describes the transmit diversity concepts included in the WCDMA and cdma2000 standards or standard discussions, as well as promising new transmission methods for MIMO and MISO channels, crucial for future high data-rate systems. A number of techniques developed herein have been adopted in the 3G standards, or are currently being proposed for such standards, with the target of improving data rates, signal quality, capacity or system flexibility. The thesis adopts a model involving matrix-valued modulation alphabets, with different dimensions usually defined over space and time. The symbol matrix is formed as a linear combination of symbols, and the space-dimension is realized by using multiple transmit and receive antennas. Many of the transceiver concepts and modulation methods developed herein provide both spatial multiplexing gain and diversity gain. For example, full-diversity full-rate schemes are proposed where the symbol rate equals the number of transmit antennas. The modulation methods are developed for open-loop transmission. Moreover, the thesis proposes related closed-loop transmission methods, where space–time modulation is combined either with automatic retransmission or multiuser scheduling.reviewe

Chip level decision feedback equalizer for CDMA downlink channel

    Get PDF
In most commercial wideband code division multiple access (W-CDMA) systems, the transmitted signal in the downlink channel is spread by orthogonal codes to accommodate different users. However, frequency selective fading destroys the orthogonality and causes multiple access interference (MAI). The rake receiver has been proposed for a receiver in the downlink channel. Although providing reasonable performance due to path diversity, the rake receiver does not restore the orthogonality. As a result, the MAI is still present at the output of the rake receiver and CDMA system becomes an interference limited system. Thus, a better approach to provide MAI suppression shall be considered. The chip level linear equalizer followed by a despreader is an attractive alternative receiver to restore the orthogonality and to suppress the MAI. However, the performance of the chip level linear equalizer depends on the spectral characteristic of the channel and may not be satisfactory for some channels. To overcome this difficulty, the chip level decision feedback equalizer can be used. To improve the performance further, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels by using multiple antennas can also be employed. Recent research in information theory shows that multiple antennas can mitigate multipath fading in a wireless channel, increase the information capacity of wireless communication systems dramatically, and improve the reliability of the communications over wireless channel. In this thesis, the chip level decision feedback equalizer for CDMA downlink channel with multþle antennas is investigated. The work includes the design of the chip level decision feedback equalizer when the space time spreading scheme and the Alamouti scheme are employed at the transmitter. Theoretical and simulation results show significant performance gains compared to the rake receiver and the chip level linear equalizer.Thesis (M.Eng.Sc.) -- University of Adelaide, School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, 2004
