    Universal Guard Problems

    We provide a spectrum of results for the Universal Guard Problem, in which one is to obtain a small set of points ("guards") that are "universal" in their ability to guard any of a set of possible polygonal domains in the plane. We give upper and lower bounds on the number of universal guards that are always sufficient to guard all polygons having a given set of n vertices, or to guard all polygons in a given set of k polygons on an n-point vertex set. Our upper bound proofs include algorithms to construct universal guard sets of the respective cardinalities

    Finding Small Hitting Sets in Infinite Range Spaces of Bounded VC-Dimension

    We consider the problem of finding a small hitting set in an infinite range space F=(Q,R) of bounded VC-dimension. We show that, under reasonably general assumptions, the infinite-dimensional convex relaxation can be solved (approximately) efficiently by multiplicative weight updates. As a consequence, we get an algorithm that finds, for any delta>0, a set of size O(s_F(z^*_F)) that hits (1-delta)-fraction of R (with respect to a given measure) in time proportional to log(1/delta), where s_F(1/epsilon) is the size of the smallest epsilon-net the range space admits, and z^*_F is the value of the fractional optimal solution. This exponentially improves upon previous results which achieve the same approximation guarantees with running time proportional to poly(1/delta). Our assumptions hold, for instance, in the case when the range space represents the visibility regions of a polygon in the plane, giving thus a deterministic polynomial-time O(log z^*_F)-approximation algorithm for guarding (1-delta)-fraction of the area of any given simple polygon, with running time proportional to polylog(1/delta)

    The Complexity of Guarding Monotone Polygons

    Abstract A polygon P is x-monotone if any line orthogonal to the x-axis has a simply connected intersection with P . A set G of points inside P or on the boundary of P is said to guard the polygon if every point inside P or on the boundary of P is seen by a point in G. An interior guard can lie anywhere inside or on the boundary of the polygon. Using a reduction from Monotone 3SAT, we prove that interior guarding a monotone polygon is NP-hard. Because interior guards can be placed anywhere inside the polygon, a clever gadget is introduced that forces interior guards to be placed at very specific locations
