Efficient Semidefinite Branch-and-Cut for MAP-MRF Inference
We propose a Branch-and-Cut (B&C) method for solving general MAP-MRF
inference problems. The core of our method is a very efficient bounding
procedure, which combines scalable semidefinite programming (SDP) and a
cutting-plane method for seeking violated constraints. In order to further
speed up the computation, several strategies have been exploited, including
model reduction, warm start and removal of inactive constraints.
We analyze the performance of the proposed method under different settings,
and demonstrate that our method either outperforms or performs on par with
state-of-the-art approaches. Especially when the connectivities are dense or
when the relative magnitudes of the unary costs are low, we achieve the best
reported results. Experiments show that the proposed algorithm achieves better
approximation than the state-of-the-art methods within a variety of time
budgets on challenging non-submodular MAP-MRF inference problems.Comment: 21 page
Sherali-Adams gaps, flow-cover inequalities and generalized configurations for capacity-constrained Facility Location
Metric facility location is a well-studied problem for which linear
programming methods have been used with great success in deriving approximation
algorithms. The capacity-constrained generalizations, such as capacitated
facility location (CFL) and lower-bounded facility location (LBFL), have proved
notorious as far as LP-based approximation is concerned: while there are
local-search-based constant-factor approximations, there is no known linear
relaxation with constant integrality gap. According to Williamson and Shmoys
devising a relaxation-based approximation for \cfl\ is among the top 10 open
problems in approximation algorithms.
This paper advances significantly the state-of-the-art on the effectiveness
of linear programming for capacity-constrained facility location through a host
of impossibility results for both CFL and LBFL. We show that the relaxations
obtained from the natural LP at levels of the Sherali-Adams
hierarchy have an unbounded gap, partially answering an open question of
\cite{LiS13, AnBS13}. Here, denotes the number of facilities in the
instance. Building on the ideas for this result, we prove that the standard CFL
relaxation enriched with the generalized flow-cover valid inequalities
\cite{AardalPW95} has also an unbounded gap. This disproves a long-standing
conjecture of \cite{LeviSS12}. We finally introduce the family of proper
relaxations which generalizes to its logical extreme the classic star
relaxation and captures general configuration-style LPs. We characterize the
behavior of proper relaxations for CFL and LBFL through a sharp threshold

Exponential Lower Bounds for Polytopes in Combinatorial Optimization
We solve a 20-year old problem posed by Yannakakis and prove that there
exists no polynomial-size linear program (LP) whose associated polytope
projects to the traveling salesman polytope, even if the LP is not required to
be symmetric. Moreover, we prove that this holds also for the cut polytope and
the stable set polytope. These results were discovered through a new connection
that we make between one-way quantum communication protocols and semidefinite

Incremental closure for systems of two variables per inequality
Subclasses of linear inequalities where each inequality has at most two vari- ables are popular in abstract interpretation and model checking, because they strike a balance between what can be described and what can be efficiently computed. This paper focuses on the TVPI class of inequalities, for which each coefficient of each two variable inequality is unrestricted. An implied TVPI in- equality can be generated from a pair of TVPI inequalities by eliminating a given common variable (echoing resolution on clauses). This operation, called result , can be applied to derive TVPI inequalities which are entailed (implied) by a given TVPI system. The key operation on TVPI is calculating closure: satisfiability can be observed from a closed system and a closed system also simplifies the calculation of other operations. A closed system can be derived by repeatedly applying the result operator. The process of adding a single TVPI inequality to an already closed input TVPI system and then finding the closure of this augmented system is called incremental closure. This too can be calcu- lated by the repeated application of the result operator. This paper studies the calculus defined by result , the structure of result derivations, and how deriva- tions can be combined and controlled. A series of lemmata on derivations are presented that, collectively, provide a pathway for synthesising an algorithm for incremental closure. The complexity of the incremental closure algorithm is analysed and found to be O (( n 2 + m 2 )lg( m )), where n is the number of variables and m the number of inequalities of the input TVPI system
Four lectures on probabilistic methods for data science
Methods of high-dimensional probability play a central role in applications
for statistics, signal processing theoretical computer science and related
fields. These lectures present a sample of particularly useful tools of
high-dimensional probability, focusing on the classical and matrix Bernstein's
inequality and the uniform matrix deviation inequality. We illustrate these
tools with applications for dimension reduction, network analysis, covariance
estimation, matrix completion and sparse signal recovery. The lectures are
geared towards beginning graduate students who have taken a rigorous course in

LP-Based Algorithms for Capacitated Facility Location
Linear programming has played a key role in the study of algorithms for
combinatorial optimization problems. In the field of approximation algorithms,
this is well illustrated by the uncapacitated facility location problem. A
variety of algorithmic methodologies, such as LP-rounding and primal-dual
method, have been applied to and evolved from algorithms for this problem.
Unfortunately, this collection of powerful algorithmic techniques had not yet
been applicable to the more general capacitated facility location problem. In
fact, all of the known algorithms with good performance guarantees were based
on a single technique, local search, and no linear programming relaxation was
known to efficiently approximate the problem.
In this paper, we present a linear programming relaxation with constant
integrality gap for capacitated facility location. We demonstrate that the
fundamental theories of multi-commodity flows and matchings provide key
insights that lead to the strong relaxation. Our algorithmic proof of
integrality gap is obtained by finally accessing the rich toolbox of LP-based
methodologies: we present a constant factor approximation algorithm based on

Transfer Function Synthesis without Quantifier Elimination
Traditionally, transfer functions have been designed manually for each
operation in a program, instruction by instruction. In such a setting, a
transfer function describes the semantics of a single instruction, detailing
how a given abstract input state is mapped to an abstract output state. The net
effect of a sequence of instructions, a basic block, can then be calculated by
composing the transfer functions of the constituent instructions. However,
precision can be improved by applying a single transfer function that captures
the semantics of the block as a whole. Since blocks are program-dependent, this
approach necessitates automation. There has thus been growing interest in
computing transfer functions automatically, most notably using techniques based
on quantifier elimination. Although conceptually elegant, quantifier
elimination inevitably induces a computational bottleneck, which limits the
applicability of these methods to small blocks. This paper contributes a method
for calculating transfer functions that finesses quantifier elimination
altogether, and can thus be seen as a response to this problem. The
practicality of the method is demonstrated by generating transfer functions for
input and output states that are described by linear template constraints,
