    Development of Pre-flight Simulator to Improve The 3D Modeling Efficiency using UAV

    Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is used in a variety of fields because there are no people on board. In particular, technologies for 3D modeling using UAV are being researched and developed. In 3D modeling using such an UAV, in order to save time and cost and improve the quality of output, a flight plan must be established in advance with the characteristics of the object to be model. However, it is difficult to find a simulator that can check the flight path and the product in advance with the characteristics of object. Therefore, in this study, a pre-flight simulator was developed to improve the efficiency of 3D modeling by applying point cloud data and LOD. In addition, to verify the performance of the simulator, the estimated product of the simulator and the actual product were compared

    Discrete spatial datasets known as point clouds often lay the groundwork for decision-making applications. E.g., we can use such data as a reference for autonomous cars and robot’s navigation, as a layer for floor-plan’s creation and building’s construction, as a digital asset for environment modelling and incident prediction... Applications are numerous, and potentially increasing if we consider point clouds as digital reality assets. Yet, this expansion faces technical limitations mainly from the lack of semantic information within point ensembles. Connecting knowledge sources is still a very manual and time-consuming process suffering from error-prone human interpretation. This highlights a strong need for domain-related data analysis to create a coherent and structured information. The thesis clearly tries to solve automation problematics in point cloud processing to create intelligent environments, i.e. virtual copies that can be used/integrated in fully autonomous reasoning services. We tackle point cloud questions associated with knowledge extraction – particularly segmentation and classification – structuration, visualisation and interaction with cognitive decision systems. We propose to connect both point cloud properties and formalized knowledge to rapidly extract pertinent information using domain-centered graphs. The dissertation delivers the concept of a Smart Point Cloud (SPC) Infrastructure which serves as an interoperable and modular architecture for a unified processing. It permits an easy integration to existing workflows and a multi-domain specialization through device knowledge, analytic knowledge or domain knowledge. Concepts, algorithms, code and materials are given to replicate findings and extend current applications.Les ensembles discrets de données spatiales, appelés nuages de points, forment souvent le support principal pour des scénarios d’aide à la décision. Par exemple, nous pouvons utiliser ces données comme référence pour les voitures autonomes et la navigation des robots, comme couche pour la création de plans et la construction de bâtiments, comme actif numérique pour la modélisation de l'environnement et la prédiction d’incidents... Les applications sont nombreuses et potentiellement croissantes si l'on considère les nuages de points comme des actifs de réalité numérique. Cependant, cette expansion se heurte à des limites techniques dues principalement au manque d'information sémantique au sein des ensembles de points. La création de liens avec des sources de connaissances est encore un processus très manuel, chronophage et lié à une interprétation humaine sujette à l'erreur. Cela met en évidence la nécessité d'une analyse automatisée des données relatives au domaine étudié afin de créer une information cohérente et structurée. La thèse tente clairement de résoudre les problèmes d'automatisation dans le traitement des nuages de points pour créer des environnements intelligents, c'est-àdire des copies virtuelles qui peuvent être utilisées/intégrées dans des services de raisonnement totalement autonomes. Nous abordons plusieurs problématiques liées aux nuages de points et associées à l'extraction des connaissances - en particulier la segmentation et la classification - la structuration, la visualisation et l'interaction avec les systèmes cognitifs de décision. Nous proposons de relier à la fois les propriétés des nuages de points et les connaissances formalisées pour extraire rapidement les informations pertinentes à l'aide de graphes centrés sur le domaine. La dissertation propose le concept d'une infrastructure SPC (Smart Point Cloud) qui sert d'architecture interopérable et modulaire pour un traitement unifié. Elle permet une intégration facile aux flux de travail existants et une spécialisation multidomaine grâce aux connaissances liée aux capteurs, aux connaissances analytiques ou aux connaissances de domaine. Plusieurs concepts, algorithmes, codes et supports sont fournis pour reproduire les résultats et étendre les applications actuelles.Diskrete räumliche Datensätze, so genannte Punktwolken, bilden oft die Grundlage für Entscheidungsanwendungen. Beispielsweise können wir solche Daten als Referenz für autonome Autos und Roboternavigation, als Ebene für die Erstellung von Grundrissen und Gebäudekonstruktionen, als digitales Gut für die Umgebungsmodellierung und Ereignisprognose verwenden... Die Anwendungen sind zahlreich und nehmen potenziell zu, wenn wir Punktwolken als Digital Reality Assets betrachten. Allerdings stößt diese Erweiterung vor allem durch den Mangel an semantischen Informationen innerhalb von Punkt-Ensembles auf technische Grenzen. Die Verbindung von Wissensquellen ist immer noch ein sehr manueller und zeitaufwendiger Prozess, der unter fehleranfälliger menschlicher Interpretation leidet. Dies verdeutlicht den starken Bedarf an domänenbezogenen Datenanalysen, um eine kohärente und strukturierte Information zu schaffen. Die Arbeit versucht eindeutig, Automatisierungsprobleme in der Punktwolkenverarbeitung zu lösen, um intelligente Umgebungen zu schaffen, d.h. virtuelle Kopien, die in vollständig autonome Argumentationsdienste verwendet/integriert werden können. Wir befassen uns mit Punktwolkenfragen im Zusammenhang mit der Wissensextraktion - insbesondere Segmentierung und Klassifizierung - Strukturierung, Visualisierung und Interaktion mit kognitiven Entscheidungssystemen. Wir schlagen vor, sowohl Punktwolkeneigenschaften als auch formalisiertes Wissen zu verbinden, um schnell relevante Informationen mithilfe von domänenzentrierten Grafiken zu extrahieren. Die Dissertation liefert das Konzept einer Smart Point Cloud (SPC) Infrastruktur, die als interoperable und modulare Architektur für eine einheitliche Verarbeitung dient. Es ermöglicht eine einfache Integration in bestehende Workflows und eine multidimensionale Spezialisierung durch Gerätewissen, analytisches Wissen oder Domänenwissen.     A Web GIS-based Integration of 3D Digital Models with Linked Open Data for Cultural Heritage Exploration

    This PhD project explores how geospatial semantic web concepts, 3D web-based visualisation, digital interactive map, and cloud computing concepts could be integrated to enhance digital cultural heritage exploration; to offer long-term archiving and dissemination of 3D digital cultural heritage models; to better interlink heterogeneous and sparse cultural heritage data. The research findings were disseminated via four peer-reviewed journal articles and a conference article presented at GISTAM 2020 conference (which received the ‘Best Student Paper Award’)

    ULTRA CLOSE-RANGE DIGITAL PHOTOGRAMMETRY AS A TOOL TO PRESERVE, STUDY, AND SHARE SKELETAL REMAINS

    Skeletal collections around the world hold valuable and intriguing knowledge about humanity. Their potential value could be fully exploited by overcoming current limitations in documenting and sharing them. Virtual anthropology provides effective ways to study and value skeletal collections using three-dimensional (3D) data, e.g. allowing powerful comparative and evolutionary studies, along with specimen preservation and dissemination. CT- and laser scanning are the most used techniques for three-dimensional reconstruction. However, they are resource-intensive and, therefore, difficult to be applied to large samples or skeletal collections. Ultra close-range digital photogrammetry (UCR-DP) enables photorealistic 3D reconstructions from simple photographs of the specimen. However, it is the least used method in skeletal anthropology and the lack of appropriate protocols often limit the quality of its outcomes. This Ph.D. thesis explored UCR-DP application in skeletal anthropology. The state-of-the-art of this technique was studied, and a new approach based on cloud computing was proposed and validated against current gold standards. This approach relies on the processing capabilities of remote servers and a free-for-academic use software environment; it proved to produce measurements equivalent to those of osteometry and, in many cases, they were more precise than those of CT-scanning. Cloud-based UCR-DP allowed the processing of multiple 3D models at once, leading to a low-cost, quick, and effective 3D production. The technique was successfully used to digitally preserve an initial sample of 534 crania from the skeletal collections of the Museo Sardo di Antropologia ed Etnografia (MuSAE, Università degli Studi di Cagliari). Best practices in using the technique for skeletal collection dissemination were studied and several applications were developed including MuSAE online virtual tours, virtual physical anthropology labs and distance learning, durable online dissemination, and values-led participatorily designed interactive and immersive exhibitions at the MuSAE. The sample will be used in a future population study of Sardinian skeletal characteristics from the Neolithic to modern times. In conclusion, cloud-based UCR-DP offers many significant advantages over other 3D scanning techniques: greater versatility in terms of application range and technical implementation, scalability, photorealistic restitution, reduced requirements relating to hardware, labour, time, and cost, and is, therefore, the best choice to document and value effectively large skeletal samples and collections

    Management of spatial data for visualization on mobile devices

    Vector-based mapping is emerging as a preferred format in Location-based Services(LBS), because it can deliver an up-to-date and interactive map visualization. The Progressive Transmission(PT) technique has been developed to enable the ecient transmission of vector data over the internet by delivering various incremental levels of detail(LoD). However, it is still challenging to apply this technique in a mobile context due to many inherent limitations of mobile devices, such as small screen size, slow processors and limited memory. Taking account of these limitations, PT has been extended by developing a framework of ecient data management for the visualization of spatial data on mobile devices. A data generalization framework is proposed and implemented in a software application. This application can signicantly reduce the volume of data for transmission and enable quick access to a simplied version of data while preserving appropriate visualization quality. Using volunteered geographic information as a case-study, the framework shows exibility in delivering up-to-date spatial information from dynamic data sources. Three models of PT are designed and implemented to transmit the additional LoD renements: a full scale PT as an inverse of generalisation, a viewdependent PT, and a heuristic optimised view-dependent PT. These models are evaluated with user trials and application examples. The heuristic optimised view-dependent PT has shown a signicant enhancement over the traditional PT in terms of bandwidth-saving and smoothness of transitions. A parallel data management strategy associated with three corresponding algorithms has been developed to handle LoD spatial data on mobile clients. This strategy enables the map rendering to be performed in parallel with a process which retrieves the data for the next map location the user will require. A viewdependent approach has been integrated to monitor the volume of each LoD for visible area. The demonstration of a exible rendering style shows its potential use in visualizing dynamic geoprocessed data. Future work may extend this to integrate topological constraints and semantic constraints for enhancing the vector map visualization
