    Socialising Epistemic Cognition

    We draw on recent accounts of social epistemology to present a novel account of epistemic cognition that is ‘socialised’. In developing this account we foreground the: normative and pragmatic nature of knowledge claims; functional role that ‘to know’ plays when agents say they ‘know x’; the social context in which such claims occur at a macro level, including disciplinary and cultural context; and the communicative context in which such claims occur, the ways in which individuals and small groups express and construct (or co-construct) their knowledge claims. We frame prior research in terms of this new approach to provide an exemplification of its application. Practical implications for research and learning contexts are highlighted, suggesting a re-focussing of analysis on the collective level, and the ways knowledge-standards emerge from group-activity, as a communicative property of that activity

    Illegitimate Values, Confirmation Bias, and Mandevillian Cognition in Science

    In the philosophy of science, it is a common proposal that values are illegitimate in science and should be counteracted whenever they drive inquiry to the confirmation of predetermined conclusions. Drawing on recent cognitive scientific research on human reasoning and confirmation bias, I argue that this view should be rejected. Advocates of it have overlooked that values that drive inquiry to the confirmation of predetermined conclusions can contribute to the reliability of scientific inquiry at the group level even when they negatively affect an individual’s cognition. This casts doubt on the proposal that such values should always be illegitimate in science. It also suggests that advocates of that proposal assume a narrow, individualistic account of science that threatens to undermine their own project of ensuring reliable belief formation in science

    Models, Brains, and Scientific Realism

    Prediction Error Minimization theory (PEM) is one of the most promising attempts to model perception in current science of mind, and it has recently been advocated by some prominent philosophers as Andy Clark and Jakob Hohwy. Briefly, PEM maintains that “the brain is an organ that on aver-age and over time continually minimizes the error between the sensory input it predicts on the basis of its model of the world and the actual sensory input” (Hohwy 2014, p. 2). An interesting debate has arisen with regard to which is the more adequate epistemological interpretation of PEM. Indeed, Hohwy maintains that given that PEM supports an inferential view of perception and cognition, PEM has to be considered as conveying an internalist epistemological perspective. Contrary to this view, Clark maintains that it would be incorrect to interpret in such a way the indirectness of the link between the world and our inner model of it, and that PEM may well be combined with an externalist epistemological perspective. The aim of this paper is to assess those two opposite interpretations of PEM. Moreover, it will be suggested that Hohwy’s position may be considerably strengthened by adopting Carlo Cellucci’s view on knowledge (2013)

    A virtue epistemology of the Internet: Search engines, intellectual virtues and education

    This paper applies a virtue epistemology approach to using the Internet, as to improve our information-seeking behaviours. Virtue epistemology focusses on the cognitive character of agents and is less concerned with the nature of truth and epistemic justification as compared to traditional analytic epistemology. Due to this focus on cognitive character and agency, it is a fruitful but underexplored approach to using the Internet in an epistemically desirable way. Thus, the central question in this paper is: How to use the Internet in an epistemically virtuous way? Using the work of Jason Baehr, it starts by outlining nine intellectual or epistemic virtues: curiosity, intellectual autonomy, intellectual humility, attentiveness, intellectual carefulness, intellectual thoroughness, open-mindedness, intellectual courage and intellectual tenacity. It then explores how we should deploy these virtues and avoid the corresponding vices when interacting with the Internet, particularly search engines. Whilst an epistemically virtuous use of the Internet will not guarantee that one will acquire true beliefs, understanding or even knowledge, it will strongly improve one’s information-seeking behaviours. The paper ends with arguing that teaching and assessing online intellectual virtues should be part of school and university curricula, perhaps embedded in critical thinking courses, or even better, as individual units

    Epistemic Cognition During Problem Solving

    Students’ beliefs about knowledge and knowing (personal epistemologies) have been shown to in-ïŹ‚uence various aspects of learning including, self-regulated learning, metacognition, and problem solving achievement (Bromme, Pieschl, & Stahl, 2009; Muis & Franco, 2009b, 2009a). Additionally, these beliefs have been shown to be discipline and context speciïŹc (Hofer, 2006; Hofer & Pintrich, 1997; Liu, 2011; Chinn, Buckland, & Samarapungavan, 2011). Multiple studies have investigated students’ personal epis-temologies across disciplines and how these beliefs inïŹ‚uence aspects of learning; however, little work has investigated the connections between students’ personal epistemologies and the processes they utilize during problem solving. Through a three phase study, this work sought to answer the overall research question, “How do undergraduate engineering students’ epistemic beliefs and need for cognitive closure relate to their activation of components of epistemic cognition during problem solving?” This study investigated epistemic cognition in two unique problem solving contexts, the classroom and research environment. Throughout this work, engineering epistemic beliefs are deïŹned based on Hofer and Pintrich’s (1997) conceptualization and include students’ beliefs about the source, structure, and certainty of knowledge. Epistemic cognition is deïŹned based on Chinn and colleagues’ (2011; 2014) proposed framework that brings work from philosophy and psychology together. This framework suggests considering the nature of students’ aims when approaching a task to determine if they are epistemic (related to gaining knowledge or understanding), as well as the processes students use to accomplish these goals. Phase I (Chapter 2) of the study focused on assessing the reliability and validity of a survey instru-ment designed to measure students’ engineering epistemic beliefs and need for cognitive closure. During this phase, the internal consistency reliability of each construct was assessed and students’ open-ended responses to items were analyzed to further understand their beliefs. Phase II (Chapter 3) aimed to understand the connections between students’ engineering epistemic beliefs, need for cognitive closure, and activation of components of epistemic cognition when solving an open-ended homework problem using a mixed methods approach. This phase revealed similar epistemic cognitions among students in clusters based on their epis-temic beliefs and need for closure. Additionally, it revealed aspects within the classroom that inïŹ‚uence how students approach assigned problems. Phase III (Chapter 4) sought to understand students’ epistemic cogni-tions when making decisions in their undergraduate research experiences. The results of this phase revealed how students chose a research topic and the processes students use when making research decisions. The outcomes of these three phases provide a more complete understanding of students’ epistemic cognitions and beliefs related to problem solving in the classroom and research environment. Many of the ïŹndings presented in this work have direct implications for both practice and research. Future work will seek to understand how these results translate to other disciplines and students at other institutions in order to push theory and practice further

    Collective Implicit Attitudes: A Stakeholder Conception of Implicit Bias

    Psychologists and philosophers have not yet resolved what they take implicit attitudes to be; and, some, concerned about limitations in the psychometric evidence, have even challenged the predictive and theoretical value of positing implicit attitudes in explanations for social behavior. In the midst of this debate, prominent stakeholders in science have called for scientific communities to recognize and countenance implicit bias in STEM fields. In this paper, I stake out a stakeholder conception of implicit bias that responds to these challenges in ways that are responsive to the psychometric evidence, while also being resilient to the sorts of disagreements and scientific progress that would not undermine the soundness of this call. Along the way, my account advocates for attributing collective (group-level) implicit attitudes rather than individual-level implicit attitudes. This position raises new puzzles for future research on the relationship (metaphysical, epistemic, and ethical) between collective implicit attitudes and individual-level attitudes

    How to entrain your evil demon

    The notion that the brain is a prediction error minimizer entails, via the notion of Markov blankets and self-evidencing, a form of global scepticism — an inability to rule out evil demon scenarios. This type of scepticism is viewed by some as a sign of a fatally flawed conception of mind and cognition. Here I discuss whether this scepticism is ameliorated by acknowledging the role of action in the most ambitious approach to prediction error minimization, namely under the free energy principle. I argue that the scepticism remains but that the role of action in the free energy principle constrains the demon’s work. This yields new insights about the free energy principle, epistemology, and the place of mind in nature

    Skepticism Motivated: On the Skeptical Import of Motivated Reasoning

    Empirical work on motivated reasoning suggests that our judgments are influenced to a surprising extent by our wants, desires and preferences (Kahan 2016; Lord, Ross, and Lepper 1979; Molden and Higgins 2012; Taber and Lodge 2006). How should we evaluate the epistemic status of beliefs formed through motivated reasoning? For example, are such beliefs epistemically justified? Are they candidates for knowledge? In liberal democracies, these questions are increasingly controversial as well as politically timely (Beebe et al. 2018; Lynch forthcoming, 2018; Slothuus and de Vreese 2010). And yet, the epistemological significance of motivated reasoning has been almost entirely ignored by those working in mainstream epistemology. We aim to rectify this oversight. Using politically motivated reasoning as a case study, we show how motivated reasoning gives rise to three distinct kinds of skeptical challenges. We conclude by showing how the skeptical import of motivated reasoning has some important ramifications for how we should think about the demands of intellectual humility

    Philosophical expertise under the microscope

    Recent experimental studies indicate that epistemically irrelevant factors can skew our intuitions, and that some degree of scepticism about appealing to intuition in philosophy is warranted. In response, some have claimed that philosophers are experts in such a way as to vindicate their reliance on intuitions—this has become known as the ‘expertise defence’. This paper explores the viability of the expertise defence, and suggests that it can be partially vindicated. Arguing that extant discussion is problematically imprecise, we will finesse the notion of ‘philosophical expertise’ in order to better reflect the complex reality of the different practices involved in philosophical inquiry. On this basis, we offer a new version of the expertise defence that allows for distinct types of philosophical expertise. The upshot of our approach is that wholesale vindications or rejections of the expertise defence are shown to be unwarranted; we must instead turn to local, piecemeal investigations of philosophical expertise. Lastly, in the spirit of taking our own advice, we exemplify how recent developments from experimental philosophy lend themselves to this approach, and can empirically support one instance of a successful expertise defence

    Mens rea ascription, expertise and outcome effects: Professional judges surveyed

    A coherent practice of mens rea (‘guilty mind’) ascription in criminal law presupposes a concept of mens rea which is insensitive to the moral valence of an action’s outcome. For instance, an assessment of whether an agent harmed another person intentionally should be unaffected by the severity of harm done. Ascriptions of intentionality made by laypeople, however, are subject to a strong outcome bias. As demonstrated by the Knobe effect, a knowingly incurred negative side effect is standardly judged intentional, whereas a positive side effect is not. We report the first empirical investigation into intentionality ascriptions made by professional judges, which finds (i) that professionals are sensitive to the moral valence of outcome type, and (ii) that the worse the outcome, the higher the propensity to ascribe intentionality. The data shows the intentionality ascriptions of professional judges to be inconsistent with the concept of mens rea supposedly at the foundation of criminal law
