Efficient Time of Arrival Calculation for Acoustic Source Localization Using Wireless Sensor Networks
Acoustic source localization is a very useful tool in surveillance and tracking applications. Potential exists for ubiquitous presence of acoustic source localization systems. However, due to several significant challenges they are currently limited in their applications. Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) offer a feasible solution that can allow for large, ever present acoustic localization systems. Some fundamental challenges remain. This thesis presents some ideas for helping solve the challenging problems faced by networked acoustic localization systems. We make use of a low-power WSN designed specifically for distributed acoustic source localization. Our ideas are based on three important observations. First, sounds emanating from a source will be free of reflections at the beginning of the sound. We make use of this observation by selectively processing only the initial parts of a sound to be localized. Second, the significant features of a sound are more robust to various interference sources. We perform key feature recognition such as the locations of significant zero crossings and local peaks. Third, these features which are compressed descriptors, can also be used for distributed pattern matching. For this we perform basic pattern analysis by comparing sampled signals from various nodes in order to determine better Time Of Arrivals (TOA). Our implementation tests these ideas in a predictable test environment. A complete system for general sounds is left for future wor

Environmental Application with Multi Sensor Network
This paper aimed to monitor temperature, humidity, and CO gas level using environmental application with multi sensor network (MSN). This system was applied in real life and real time, to be able to obtain data and information through mobile devices and other on internet network. In this research, environmental application is monitored remotely using displays on the web and sensors as device. This research obtained data in outdoor and indoor parking area also with obstacles and without obstacles, so it obtained the results from each of the different environmental conditions.
Intrusion Detection In Wireless Sensor Networks
There are several applications that use sensor motes and researchers continue to explore additional applications. For this particular application of detecting the movement of humans through the sensor field, a set of Berkley mica2 motes on TinyOS operating system is used. Different sensors such as pressure, light, and so on can be used to identify the presence of an intruder in the field. In our case, the light sensor is chosen for the detection. When an intruder crosses the monitored environment, the system detects the changes of the light values, and any significant change meaning that a change greater than a pre-defined threshold. This indicates the presence of an intruder. An integrated web cam is used to take snapshot of the intruder and transmit the picture through the network to a remote station. The basic motivation of this thesis is that a sensor web system can be used to monitor and detect any intruder in a specific area from a remote location
Surveying Position Based Routing Protocols for Wireless Sensor and Ad-hoc Networks
A focus of the scientific community is to design network oriented position-based routing protocols and this has resulted in a very high number of algorithms, different in approach and performance and each suited only to particular applications. However, though numerous, very few position-based algorithms have actually been adopted for commercial purposes. This article is a survey of almost 50 position-based routing protocols and it comes as an aid in the implementation of this type of routing in various applications which may need to consider the advantages and pitfalls of position-based routing. An emphasis is made on geographic routing, whose notion is clarified as a more restrictive and more efficient type of position-based routing. The protocols are therefore divided into geographic and non-geographic routing protocols and each is characterized according to a number of network design issues and presented in a comparative manner from multiple points of view. The main requirements of current general applications are also studied and, depending on these, the survey proposes a number of protocols for use in particular application areas. This aims to help both researchers and potential users assess and choose the protocol best suited to their interest
Cooperative strategies for the detection and localization of odorants with robots and artificial noses
This research work addresses the design of a robotic platform oriented towards
the implementation of bio-inspired cooperative search strategies. In particular, the
design processes of both the electronics and hardware have been focused towards
the real-world validation of algorithms that are capable of tackling search problems
that have uncertainty, such as the search of odor sources that have spatio-temporal
variability. These kind of problems can be solved more efficiently with the use of
swarms formed by a considerable amount of robots, and thus the proposed platform
makes use of low cost components. This has been possible with the combination
of standardized elements -as the Arduino controller board and other integrated
sensors- with custom parts that can be manufactured with a 3D printer attending
to the open-source hardware philosophy.
Among the design requirements is the energy efficiency -in order to maximize
the working range of the robots-, their positioning capability within the search environment,
and multiple sensor integration -with the incorporation of an artificial
nose, luminosity, distance, humidity and temperature sensors, as well as an electronic
compass-. Another subject that is tackled is the use of an efficient wireless
communication strategy based on ZigBee. The developed system, named GNBot,
has also been validated in the aspects of energy efficiency and for its combined capabilities
for autonomous spatial positioning and detection of ethanol-based odor
sources.
The presented platform -formed by the GNBot, the GNBoard electronics and
the abstraction layer built in Python- will thus simplify the processes of implementation
and evaluation of various strategies for the detection, search and monitoring
of odorants with conveniently standardized robot swarms provided with artificial
noses and other multimodal sensors
An overview of local positioning system: technologies, techniques and applications
Positioning system like global position system (GPS) and Local position system (LPS) have become very important in a large number of applications such as monitoring and tracking, etc. Because of the limitations of GPS in indoor environments due to the lack of line of sight (LoS), the use of LPS has become a true necessary to estimate user’s or object position with a good accuracy. In order to choose the best LPS system, a compromise between accuracy, precision, power consumption, coverage and cost should be taken into account. This paper introduces an overview of LPS performance parameters, current technologies, techniques and methods used by LPS. On the other hand, the comparison between LPS technologies and techniques used based on those technologies are also discussed. Furthermore, the LPS’s applications that have been done by previous researches such as human tracking, object tracking, animal tracking and automatic guide vehicle (AGV) tracking will be discussed. We believe this paper would catalyze further investigation by the researcher which is interested on the LPS field
Location-Enabled IoT (LE-IoT): A Survey of Positioning Techniques, Error Sources, and Mitigation
The Internet of Things (IoT) has started to empower the future of many
industrial and mass-market applications. Localization techniques are becoming
key to add location context to IoT data without human perception and
intervention. Meanwhile, the newly-emerged Low-Power Wide-Area Network (LPWAN)
technologies have advantages such as long-range, low power consumption, low
cost, massive connections, and the capability for communication in both indoor
and outdoor areas. These features make LPWAN signals strong candidates for
mass-market localization applications. However, there are various error sources
that have limited localization performance by using such IoT signals. This
paper reviews the IoT localization system through the following sequence: IoT
localization system review -- localization data sources -- localization
algorithms -- localization error sources and mitigation -- localization
performance evaluation. Compared to the related surveys, this paper has a more
comprehensive and state-of-the-art review on IoT localization methods, an
original review on IoT localization error sources and mitigation, an original
review on IoT localization performance evaluation, and a more comprehensive
review of IoT localization applications, opportunities, and challenges. Thus,
this survey provides comprehensive guidance for peers who are interested in
enabling localization ability in the existing IoT systems, using IoT systems
for localization, or integrating IoT signals with the existing localization
sensors
