Enhancing E-learning platforms with social networks mining
Social Networks appeared as an Internet application that offers several tools to create a personal virtual profile, add other users as friends, and interact with them through messages. These networks quickly evolved and won particular importance in people lives. Now, everyday, people use social networks to share news, interests, and discuss topics that in some way are
important to them.
Together with social networks, e-learning platforms and related technologies have evolved in the recent years. Both platforms and technologies (social networks and e-learning) enable access to specific
information and are able to redirect specific content to an individual person.
This dissertation is motivated on social networks data mining over e-learning
platforms. It considers the following four social networks: Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, and Delicious. In order to acquire, analyze, and make a correct and precise implementation of data, two different approaches were followed: enhancement of a current e-learning platform and improvement of search engines. The first approach proposes and elaborates a recommendation tool for Web documents using, as main criterion, social information to support a custom Learning Management System (LMS). In order to create the proposed system, three distinct applications (the Crawler, the SocialRank, and the Recommender) were proposed. Such data
will be then incorporated into an LMS system, such as the Personal Learning Environment Box (PLEBOX). PLEBOX is a custom platform based on operating systems layout, and also, provides a software development kit (SDK), a
group of tools, to create and manage modules. The results of recommendation tool about ten course units are presented.
The second part presents an approach to improve a search engine based on social networks content. Subsequently, a depth analysis to justify the abovementioned procedures in order to create the SocialRank is presented.
Finally, the results are presented and validated together with a custom search engine. Then, a solution to integrate and offer an order improvement of Web contents in a search engine was proposed, created, demonstrated, and validated, and it is ready for use.
Ambas as plataformas e tecnologias (redes sociais e
A primeira abordagem propÔe e elaboração
de uma ferramenta de recomendação de documentos Web usando, como
principal critério, a informação social para apoiar um sistema de gestão de
aprendizagem (LMS). Desta forma, foram construĂdas trĂȘs aplicaçÔes
distintas, designadas por Crawler, SocialRank e Recommender. As
informaçÔes extraĂdas serĂŁo incorporadas num sistema E-learning, tendo
sido escolhida a PLEBOX (Personal Learning Environment Box). A PLEBOX Ă©
Managing evolution and change in web-based teaching and learning environments
The state of the art in information technology and educational technologies is evolving constantly.
Courses taught are subject to constant change from organisational and subject-specific reasons. Evolution
and change affect educators and developers of computer-based teaching and learning environments alike â
both often being unprepared to respond effectively. A large number of educational systems are designed
and developed without change and evolution in mind. We will present our approach to the design and
maintenance of these systems in rapidly evolving environments and illustrate the consequences of evolution
and change for these systems and for the educators and developers responsible for their implementation and
deployment. We discuss various factors of change, illustrated by a Web-based virtual course, with the
objective of raising an awareness of this issue of evolution and change in computer-supported teaching and
learning environments. This discussion leads towards the establishment of a development and management
framework for teaching and learning systems
Towards a re-engineering method for web services architectures
Recent developments in Web technologies â in particular
through the Web services framework â have greatly enhanced the flexible and interoperable implementation of service-oriented software architectures. Many older Web-based and other distributed software systems will be re-engineered to a Web services-oriented platform. Using an advanced
e-learning system as our case study, we investigate central aspects of a re-engineering approach for the Web services platform. Since our aim is to provide components of the legacy system also as services in the new platform, re-engineering to suit the new development paradigm is as important as re-engineering to suit the new architectural requirements
A conceptual architecture for interactive educational multimedia
Learning is more than knowledge acquisition; it often involves the active participation of the learner in a variety of knowledge- and skills-based learning and training activities. Interactive multimedia technology can support the variety of interaction channels and languages required to facilitate interactive learning and teaching.
A conceptual architecture for interactive educational multimedia can support the development of such multimedia systems. Such an architecture needs to embed multimedia technology into a coherent educational context. A framework based on an integrated interaction model is needed to capture learning and training activities in an online setting from an educational perspective, to describe them in the human-computer context, and to integrate them with mechanisms and principles of multimedia interaction
Project Management Learning in a Collaborative Distant Learning Context - An Actual On-going Experience
The goal of this paper is to show the results of an on-going experience on teaching project management to grade students by following a development scheme of management related competencies on an individual basis. In order to achieve that goal, the students are organized in teams that must solve a problem and manage the development of a feasible solution to satisfy the needs of a client. The innovative component advocated in this paper is the formal introduction of negotiating and virtual team management aspects, as different teams from different universities at different locations and comprising students with different backgrounds must collaborate and compete amongst them. The different learning aspects are identified and the improvement levels are reflected in a rubric that has been designed ad hoc for this experience. Finally, the effort frameworks for the student and instructor have been established according to the requirements of the Bologna paradigms. This experience is developed through a software-based support system allowing blended learning for the theoretical and individual?s work aspects, blogs, wikis, etc., as well as project management tools based on WWW that allow the monitoring of not only the expected deliverables and the achievement of the goals but also the progress made on learning as established in the defined rubri
MELEES - e-support or mayhem?
This paper reports on progress in developing a web-based environment to support non-specialist mathematics students taking University level Mathematics as a compulsory subject in their first and second years. The scale and diversity of the service teaching provision at Nottingham invites the use of a technology-based framework in order to make available the âgood practiceâ features developed both locally and elsewhere. Initially the two year development is focusing on: âą establishing a supportive environment; âą providing feedback to students, their lecturers and importantly to their home Schools; âą identifying and supporting e-learning strategies; âą improving student motivation. Current activities have been primarily directed to the first three bullet points
