Implementation relations for testing through asynchronous channels
This paper concerns testing from an input output transition system (IOTS) model of a system under test that interacts with its environment through asynchronous first in first out (FIFO) channels. It explores methods for analysing an IOTS without modelling the channels. If IOTS M produces sequence then, since communications are asynchronous, output can be delayed and so a different sequence might be observed. Thus M defines a language Tr(M) of sequences that can be observed when interacting with M through FIFO channels. We define implementation relations and equivalences in terms of Tr(M): an implementation relation says how IOTS N must relate to IOTS M in order for N to be a correct implementation of M. It is important to use an appropriate implementation relation since otherwise the verdict from a test run might be incorrect and because it influences test generation. It is undecidable whether IOTS N conforms to IOTS M and so also whether there is a test case that can distinguish between two IOTSs. We also investigate the situation in which we have a finite automaton P and either wish to know whether is empty or whether Tr(M) \cap \tr(P) is empty and prove that these are undecidable. Combining centralised and distributed testing
Many systems interact with their environment at distributed interfaces (ports) and sometimes it is not possible to place synchronised local testers at the ports of the system under test (SUT). There are then two main approaches to testing: having independent local testers or a single centralised tester that interacts asynchronously with the SUT. The power of using independent testers has been captured using implementation relation \dioco. In this paper we define implementation relation \diococ for the centralised approach and prove that \dioco and \diococ are incomparable. This shows that the frameworks detect different types of faults and so we devise a hybrid framework and define an implementation relation \diocos for this. We prove that the hybrid framework is more powerful than the distributed and centralised approaches. We then prove that the Oracle problem is NP-complete for \diococ and \diocos but can be solved in polynomial time if we place an upper bound on the number of ports. Finally, we consider the problem of deciding whether there is a test case that is guaranteed to force a finite state model into a particular state or to distinguish two states, proving that both problems are undecidable for the centralised and hybrid frameworks
Timed Implementation Relations for the Distributed Test Architecture
In order to test systems that have physically distributed interfaces, called ports, we might use a distributed approach in which there is a separate tester at each port. If the testers do not synchronise during testing then we cannot always determine the relative order of events observed at different ports and this leads to new notions of correctness that have been described using corresponding implementation relations. We study the situation in which each tester has a local clock and timestamps its observations. If we know nothing about how the local clocks relate then this does not affect the implementation relation while if the local clocks agree exactly then we can reconstruct the sequence of observations made. In practice, however, we are likely to be between these extremes: the local clocks will not agree exactly but we have some information regarding how they can differ. We start by assuming that a local tester interacts synchronously with the corresponding port of the system under test and then extend this to the case where communications can be asynchronous, considering both the first-in-first-out (FIFO) case and the non-FIFO case. The new implementation relations are stronger than implementation relations for distributed testing that do not use timestamps but still reflect the distributed nature of observations. Copyright @ 2012 Elsevier B.V.In model based testing (MBT), testing is based on a model MM that typically is expressed using a state-based language such as an input output transition system (IOTS). Most approaches to MBT assume that communications between the system under test (SUT) and its environment are synchronous. However, many systems interact with their environment through asynchronous channels and the presence of such channels changes the nature of testing. In this paper we investigate the situation in which the SUT interacts with its environment through asynchronous channels and the problems of producing test cases to reach a state, execute a transition, or to distinguish two states. In addition, we investigate the Oracle Problem. All four problems are explored for both FIFO and non-FIFO channels. It is known that the Oracle Problem can be solved in polynomial time for FIFO channels but we also show that the three test case generation problems can also be solved in polynomial time in the case where the IOTS is observable but the general test generation problems are EXPTIME-hard. For non-FIFO channels we prove that all of the test case generation problems are EXPTIME-hard and the Oracle Problem in NP-hard, even if we restrict attention to deterministic IOTSs
HTTP Mailbox - Asynchronous RESTful Communication
We describe HTTP Mailbox, a mechanism to enable RESTful HTTP communication in
an asynchronous mode with a full range of HTTP methods otherwise unavailable to
standard clients and servers. HTTP Mailbox allows for broadcast and multicast
semantics via HTTP. We evaluate a reference implementation using ApacheBench (a
server stress testing tool) demonstrating high throughput (on 1,000 concurrent
requests) and a systemic error rate of 0.01%. Finally, we demonstrate our HTTP
Mailbox implementation in a human assisted web preservation application called

Prototyping the Semantics of a DSL using ASF+SDF: Link to Formal Verification of DSL Models
A formal definition of the semantics of a domain-specific language (DSL) is a
key prerequisite for the verification of the correctness of models specified
using such a DSL and of transformations applied to these models. For this
reason, we implemented a prototype of the semantics of a DSL for the
specification of systems consisting of concurrent, communicating objects. Using
this prototype, models specified in the DSL can be transformed to labeled
transition systems (LTS). This approach of transforming models to LTSs allows
us to apply existing tools for visualization and verification to models with
little or no further effort. The prototype is implemented using the ASF+SDF
Meta-Environment, an IDE for the algebraic specification language ASF+SDF,
which offers efficient execution of the transformation as well as the ability

Acute: high-level programming language design for distributed computation
Existing languages provide good support for typeful programming of standalone programs. In a distributed system, however, there may be interaction between multiple instances of many distinct programs, sharing some (but not necessarily all) of their module structure, and with some instances rebuilt with new versions of certain modules as time goes on. In this paper we discuss programming language support for such systems, focussing on their typing and naming issues. We describe an experimental language, Acute, which extends an ML core to support distributed development, deployment, and execution, allowing type-safe interaction between separately-built programs. The main features are: (1) type-safe marshalling of arbitrary values; (2) type names that are generated (freshly and by hashing) to ensure that type equality tests suffice to protect the invariants of abstract types, across the entire distributed system; (3) expression-level names generated to ensure that name equality tests suffice for type-safety of associated values, e.g. values carried on named channels; (4) controlled dynamic rebinding of marshalled values to local resources; and (5) thunkification of threads and mutexes to support computation mobility. These features are a large part of what is needed for typeful distributed programming. They are a relatively lightweight extension of ML, should be efficiently implementable, and are expressive enough to enable a wide variety of distributed infrastructure layers to be written as simple library code above the byte-string network and persistent store APIs. This disentangles the language runtime from communication intricacies. This paper highlights the main design choices in Acute. It is supported by a full language definition (of typing, compilation, and operational semantics), by a prototype implementation, and by example distribution libraries
Reusing Test-Cases on Different Levels of Abstraction in a Model Based Development Tool
Seamless model based development aims to use models during all phases of the
development process of a system. During the development process in a
component-based approach, components of a system are described at qualitatively
differing abstraction levels: during requirements engineering component models
are rather abstract high-level and underspecified, while during implementation
the component models are rather concrete and fully specified in order to enable
code generation. An important issue that arises is assuring that the concrete
models correspond to abstract models. In this paper, we propose a method to
assure that concrete models for system components refine more abstract models
for the same components. In particular we advocate a framework for reusing
testcases at different abstraction levels. Our approach, even if it cannot
completely prove the refinement, can be used to ensure confidence in the
development process. In particular we are targeting the refinement of
requirements which are represented as very abstract models. Besides a formal
model of our approach, we discuss our experiences with the development of an
Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) system in a model driven development process.
This uses extensions which we implemented for our model-based development tool

Overcoming controllability problems in distributed testing from an input output transition system

We place a tester at each port and the tester at port p observes events at p only. This can lead to controllability problems, where the observations made by the tester at a port p are not sufficient for it to be able to know when to send an input. It is known that there are test objectives, such as executing a particular transition, that cannot be achieved if we restrict attention to test cases that have no controllability problems. This has led to interest in schemes where the testers at the individual ports send coordination messages to one another through an external communications network in order to overcome controllability problems. However, such approaches have largely been studied in the context of testing from a deterministic finite state machine. This paper investigates the use of coordination messages to overcome controllability problems when testing from an input output transition system and gives an algorithm for introducing sufficient messages. It also proves that the problem of minimising the number of coordination messages used is NP-hard
