    Conventional dual active bridge topologies provide galvanic isolation and soft-switching over a reasonable operating range without dedicated resonant circuits. However, scaling the two-level dual active bridge to higher dc voltage levels is impeded by several challenges among which the high dv/dt stress on the coupling transformer insulation. Gating and thermal characteristics of series switch arrays add to the limitations. To avoid the use of standard bulky modular multilevel bridges, this paper analyzes an alternative modulation technique where staircase approximated trapezoidal voltage waveforms are produced; thus alleviating developed dv/dt stresses. Modular design is realized by the utilization of half-bridge chopper cells. Therefore, the analyzed converter is a modular multi-level converter operated in a new mode with no common-mode dc arm currents as well as reduced capacitor size, hence reduced cell footprint. Suitable switching patterns are developed and various design and operation aspects are studied. Soft switching characteristics will be shown to be comparable to those of the two-level dual active bridge. Experimental results from a scaled test rig validate the presented concept

    This paper develops a small-signal impedance model of modular multilevel converters (MMCs) using harmonic state-space (HSS) method and studies the stability in a multiple converter scenario. In order to simplify analysis on the coupling characteristics between different frequencies in MMCs, the proposed model is developed in the positive-negative-zero (PN0) sequence-frame, where the zero-sequence current in three-phase three-wire system is directly set to zero without introducing complicated method. A simple 2 by 2 admittance matrix in PN0-frame is extracted from the MMC small-signal model for ease of system stability analysis. Using the developed impedance model, the multi-infeed interaction factor (MIIF) measure is adopted to analyze the most significant interactions for multi-infeed converter systems to be prioritized. Different outer-loop controllers are adopted and compared in the analysis to illustrate the effect of different control modes on converter impedance and system stability. Analytical studies and time-domain simulation results are provided to validate the proposed model and stability analysis

    Modular Battery Systems for Electric Vehicles based on Multilevel Inverter Topologies - Opportunities and Challenges

    Modular battery systems based on multilevel inverter (MLI) topologies can possibly overcome some shortcomings of two-level inverters when used for vehicle propulsion. The results presented in this thesis aim to point out the advantages and disadvantages, as well as the technical challenges, of modular vehicle battery systems based on MLIs in comparison to a conventional, two-level IGBT inverter drivetrain. The considered key aspects for this comparative investigation are the drive cycle efficiency, the inverter cost, the fault tolerance capability of the drivetrain and the conducted electromagnetic emissions. Extensive experiments have been performed to support the results and conclusions.In this work, it is shown that the simulated drive cycle efficiency of different low-voltage-MOSFET-based, cascaded seven-level inverter types is improved in comparison to a similarly rated, two-level IGBT inverter drivetrain. For example, the simulated WLTP drive cycle efficiency of a cascaded double-H-bridge (CDHB) inverter drivetrain in comparison to a two-level IGBT inverter, when used in a small passenger car, is increased from 94.24% to 95.04%, considering the inverter and the ohmic battery losses. In contrast, the obtained efficiency of a similar rated seven-level cascaded H-bridge (CHB) drivetrain is almost equal to that of the two-level inverter drivetrain, but with the help of a hybrid modulation technique, utilizing fundamental selective harmonic elimination at lower speeds, it could be improved to 94.85%. In addition, the CDHB and CHB inverters’ cost, in comparison to the two-level inverter, is reduced from 342€ to 202€ and 121€, respectively. Furthermore, based on a simple three-level inverter with a dual battery pack, it is shown that MLIs inherently allow for a fault tolerant operation. It is explained how the drivetrain of a neutral point clamped (NPC) inverter can be operated under a fault condition, so that the vehicle can drive with a limited maximum power to the next service station, referred to as limp home mode. Especially, the detection and localization of open circuit faults has been investigated and verified through simulations and experiments.Moreover, it is explained how to measure the conducted emissions of an NPC inverter with a dual battery pack according to the governing standard, CISPR 25, because the additional neutral point connection forms a peculiar three-wire DC source. To separate the measured noise spectra into CM, line-DM and phase-DMquantities, two hardware separators based on HF transformers are developed and utilized. It is shown that the CM noise is dominant. Furthermore, the CM noise is reduced by 3dB to 6dB when operating the inverter with three-level instead of two-level modulation

    Effect of frequency coupling on stability analysis of a grid-connected modular multilevel converter system

    Due to the internal dynamics of the modular multilevel converter (MMC), the coupling between the positive and negative sequences in impedance, which is defined as frequency coupling, inherently exists in MMC. Ignoring the frequency coupling of the MMC impedance model may lead to inaccurate stability assessment, and thus the multi-input multi-output (MIMO) impedance model has been developed to consider the frequency coupling effect. However, the generalized Nyquist criterion (GNC), which is used for the stability analysis of an MIMO model, is more complicated than the stability analysis method applied on single-input-single-output (SISO) models. Meanwhile, it is not always the case that the SISO model fails in the stability assessment. Therefore, the conditions when the MIMO impedance model needs to be considered in the stability analysis of an MMC system should be analyzed. This paper quantitatively analyzes the effect of frequency coupling on the stability analysis of grid-connected MMC, and clarifies the frequency range and grid conditions that the coupling effect required to be considered in the stability analysis. Based on the quantitative relations between the frequency coupling and the stability analysis of the grid-connected MMC system, a simple and accurate stability analysis method for the grid-connected MMC system is proposed, where the MIMO impedance model is applied when the frequency coupling has a significant effect and the SISO impedance model is used if the frequency coupling is insignificant

    The transition to a more and more decentralized power generation based on renewable energy generation is accompanied by high challenges. Modular power converters play a central role in facing these challenges, not only for grid integration but also to provide flexible services, highly efficient power transmission and safe storage integration. These goals are the key elements in becoming independent from fossil and nuclear power plants in near future. Even if the costs for renewable energy power plants like wind or photovoltaic systems are already competitive to conventional solutions, more flexible operation and further reduction in costs are required for faster global transformation towards sustainable energy systems. The further optimization of modular power converters can be seen as an ideal way to achieve these ambitious goals. It is therefore chosen as the focus of this work
