    On the performance of video resolution, motion and dynamism in transmission using near-capacity transceiver for wireless communication

    This article investigates the performance of various sophisticated channel coding and transmission schemes for achieving reliable transmission of a highly compressed video stream. Novel error protection schemes including Non-Convergent Coding (NCC) scheme, Non-Convergent Coding assisted with Differential Space Time Spreading (DSTS) and Sphere Packing (SP) modulation (NCDSTS-SP) scheme and Convergent Coding assisted with DSTS and SP modulation (CDSTS-SP) are analyzed using Bit Error Ratio (BER) and Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) performance metrics. Furthermore, error reduction is achieved using sophisticated transceiver comprising SP modulation technique assisted by Differential Space Time Spreading. The performance of the iterative Soft Bit Source Decoding (SBSD) in combination with channel codes is analyzed using various error protection setups by allocating consistent overall bit-rate budget. Additionally, the iterative behavior of SBSD assisted RSC decoder is analyzed with the aid of Extrinsic Information Transfer (EXIT) Chart in order to analyze the achievable turbo cliff of the iterative decoding process. The subjective and objective video quality performance of the proposed error protection schemes is analyzed while employing H.264 advanced video coding and H.265 high efficient video coding standards, while utilizing diverse video sequences having different resolution, motion and dynamism. It was observed that in the presence of noisy channel the low resolution videos outperforms its high resolution counterparts. Furthermore, it was observed that the performance of video sequence with low motion contents and dynamism outperforms relative to video sequence with high motion contents and dynamism. More specifically, it is observed that while utilizing H.265 video coding standard, the Non-Convergent Coding assisted with DSTS and SP modulation scheme with enhanced transmission mechanism results in Eb/N0 gain of 20 dB with reference to the Non-Convergent Coding and transmission mechanism at the objective PSNR value of 42 dB. It is important to mention that both the schemes have employed identical code rate. Furthermore, the Convergent Coding assisted with DSTS and SP modulation mechanism achieved superior performance with reference to the equivalent rate Non-Convergent Coding assisted with DSTS and SP modulation counterpart mechanism, with a performance gain of 16 dB at the objective PSNR grade of 42 dB. Moreover, it is observed that the maximum achievable PSNR gain through H.265 video coding standard is 45 dB, with a PSNR gain of 3 dB with reference to the identical code rate H.264 coding scheme.Web of Science235art. no. 56

    Performance Evaluation of Multimedia Content Distribution over Multi-Homed Wireless Networks

    ABSTRACT-The growing availability of IP based heterogeneous wireless access technologies coupled with the increasing capabilities of mobile devices is creating opportunities for multimedia distribution. Through its multi-homing feature, the ability to support multiple network connections in a single end to end association, the transport layer Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) can enable seamless and transparent communication sessions over multiple heterogeneous networks. This paper analyzes the performance of multimedia distribution when making use of two multihomingSCTPbasedapproaches: Single Path Transfer and Concurrent Multi-path Transfer, in which a single or all paths within an association are used simultaneously for data transmission. In this investigation various retransmission policies and different parameter sets are used in turn and recommendations are made for achieving best results during video delivery. In order to perform this study a novel realistic evaluation tool-set was proposed and is described, which can simulate video delivery over SCTP. Our simulation results and analysis show how to optimize the transmission of multimedia content over SCTP associations in both single and multipath scenarios.     This dissertation describes the instruments available for image quality evaluation, develops new methods for subjective image quality evaluation and provides image and video databases for the assessment and development of image quality assessment (IQA) algorithms. The contributions of the thesis are based on six original publications. The first publication introduced the VQone toolbox for subjective image quality evaluation. It created a platform for free-form experimentation with standardized image quality methods and was the foundation for later studies. The second publication focused on the dilemma of reference in subjective experiments by proposing a new method for image quality evaluation: the absolute category rating with dynamic reference (ACR-DR). The third publication presented a database (CID2013) in which 480 images were evaluated by 188 observers using the ACR-DR method proposed in the prior publication. Providing databases of image files along with their quality ratings is essential in the field of IQA algorithm development. The fourth publication introduced a video database (CVD2014) based on having 210 observers rate 234 video clips. The temporal aspect of the stimuli creates peculiar artifacts and degradations, as well as challenges to experimental design and video quality assessment (VQA) algorithms. When the CID2013 and CVD2014 databases were published, most state-of-the-art I/VQAs had been trained on and tested against databases created by degrading an original image or video with a single distortion at a time. The novel aspect of CID2013 and CVD2014 was that they consisted of multiple concurrent distortions. To facilitate communication and understanding among professionals in various fields of image quality as well as among non-professionals, an attribute lexicon of image quality, the image quality wheel, was presented in the fifth publication of this thesis. Reference wheels and terminology lexicons have a long tradition in sensory evaluation contexts, such as taste experience studies, where they are used to facilitate communication among interested stakeholders; however, such an approach has not been common in visual experience domains, especially in studies on image quality. The sixth publication examined how the free descriptions given by the observers influenced the ratings of the images. Understanding how various elements, such as perceived sharpness and naturalness, affect subjective image quality can help to understand the decision-making processes behind image quality evaluation. Knowing the impact of each preferential attribute can then be used for I/VQA algorithm development; certain I/VQA algorithms already incorporate low-level human visual system (HVS) models in their algorithms.Väitöskirja tarkastelee ja kehittää uusia kuvanlaadun arvioinnin menetelmiä, sekä tarjoaa kuva- ja videotietokantoja kuvanlaadun arviointialgoritmien (IQA) testaamiseen ja kehittämiseen. Se, mikä koetaan kauniina ja miellyttävänä, on psykologisesti kiinnostava kysymys. Työllä on myös merkitystä teollisuuteen kameroiden kuvanlaadun kehittämisessä. Väitöskirja sisältää kuusi julkaisua, joissa tarkastellaan aihetta eri näkökulmista. I. julkaisussa kehitettiin sovellus keräämään ihmisten antamia arvioita esitetyistä kuvista tutkijoiden vapaaseen käyttöön. Se antoi mahdollisuuden testata standardoituja kuvanlaadun arviointiin kehitettyjä menetelmiä ja kehittää niiden pohjalta myös uusia menetelmiä luoden perustan myöhemmille tutkimuksille. II. julkaisussa kehitettiin uusi kuvanlaadun arviointimenetelmä. Menetelmä hyödyntää sarjallista kuvien esitystapaa, jolla muodostettiin henkilöille mielikuva kuvien laatuvaihtelusta ennen varsinaista arviointia. Tämän todettiin vähentävän tulosten hajontaa ja erottelevan pienempiä kuvanlaatueroja. III. julkaisussa kuvaillaan tietokanta, jossa on 188 henkilön 480 kuvasta antamat laatuarviot ja niihin liittyvät kuvatiedostot. Tietokannat ovat arvokas työkalu pyrittäessä kehittämään algoritmeja kuvanlaadun automaattiseen arvosteluun. Niitä tarvitaan mm. opetusmateriaalina tekoälyyn pohjautuvien algoritmien kehityksessä sekä vertailtaessa eri algoritmien suorituskykyä toisiinsa. Mitä paremmin algoritmin tuottama ennuste korreloi ihmisten antamiin laatuarvioihin, sen parempi suorituskyky sillä voidaan sanoa olevan. IV. julkaisussa esitellään tietokanta, jossa on 210 henkilön 234 videoleikkeestä tekemät laatuarviot ja niihin liittyvät videotiedostot. Ajallisen ulottuvuuden vuoksi videoärsykkeiden virheet ovat erilaisia kuin kuvissa, mikä tuo omat haasteensa videoiden laatua arvioiville algoritmeille (VQA). Aikaisempien tietokantojen ärsykkeet on muodostettu esimerkiksi sumentamalla yksittäistä kuvaa asteittain, jolloin ne sisältävät vain yksiulotteisia vääristymiä. Nyt esitetyt tietokannat poikkeavat aikaisemmista ja sisältävät useita samanaikaisia vääristymistä, joiden interaktio kuvanlaadulle voi olla merkittävää. V. julkaisussa esitellään kuvanlaatuympyrä (image quality wheel). Se on kuvanlaadun käsitteiden sanasto, joka on kerätty analysoimalla 146 henkilön tuottamat 39 415 kuvanlaadun sanallista kuvausta. Sanastoilla on pitkät perinteet aistinvaraisen arvioinnin tutkimusperinteessä, mutta niitä ei ole aikaisemmin kehitetty kuvanlaadulle.     Soft computing applied to optimization, computer vision and medicine

    Artificial intelligence has permeated almost every area of life in modern society, and its significance continues to grow. As a result, in recent years, Soft Computing has emerged as a powerful set of methodologies that propose innovative and robust solutions to a variety of complex problems. Soft Computing methods, because of their broad range of application, have the potential to significantly improve human living conditions. The motivation for the present research emerged from this background and possibility. This research aims to accomplish two main objectives: On the one hand, it endeavors to bridge the gap between Soft Computing techniques and their application to intricate problems. On the other hand, it explores the hypothetical benefits of Soft Computing methodologies as novel effective tools for such problems. This thesis synthesizes the results of extensive research on Soft Computing methods and their applications to optimization, Computer Vision, and medicine. This work is composed of several individual projects, which employ classical and new optimization algorithms. The manuscript presented here intends to provide an overview of the different aspects of Soft Computing methods in order to enable the reader to reach a global understanding of the field. Therefore, this document is assembled as a monograph that summarizes the outcomes of these projects across 12 chapters. The chapters are structured so that they can be read independently. The key focus of this work is the application and design of Soft Computing approaches for solving problems in the following: Block Matching, Pattern Detection, Thresholding, Corner Detection, Template Matching, Circle Detection, Color Segmentation, Leukocyte Detection, and Breast Thermogram Analysis. One of the outcomes presented in this thesis involves the development of two evolutionary approaches for global optimization. These were tested over complex benchmark datasets and showed promising results, thus opening the debate for future applications. Moreover, the applications for Computer Vision and medicine presented in this work have highlighted the utility of different Soft Computing methodologies in the solution of problems in such subjects. A milestone in this area is the translation of the Computer Vision and medical issues into optimization problems. Additionally, this work also strives to provide tools for combating public health issues by expanding the concepts to automated detection and diagnosis aid for pathologies such as Leukemia and breast cancer. The application of Soft Computing techniques in this field has attracted great interest worldwide due to the exponential growth of these diseases. Lastly, the use of Fuzzy Logic, Artificial Neural Networks, and Expert Systems in many everyday domestic appliances, such as washing machines, cookers, and refrigerators is now a reality. Many other industrial and commercial applications of Soft Computing have also been integrated into everyday use, and this is expected to increase within the next decade. Therefore, the research conducted here contributes an important piece for expanding these developments.     Embracing Visual Experience and Data Knowledge: Efficient Embedded Memory Design for Big Videos and Deep Learning

    Energy efficient memory designs are becoming increasingly important, especially for applications related to mobile video technology and machine learning. The growing popularity of smart phones, tablets and other mobile devices has created an exponential demand for video applications in today?s society. When mobile devices display video, the embedded video memory within the device consumes a large amount of the total system power. This issue has created the need to introduce power-quality tradeoff techniques for enabling good quality video output, while simultaneously enabling power consumption reduction. Similarly, power efficiency issues have arisen within the area of machine learning, especially with applications requiring large and fast computation, such as neural networks. Using the accumulated data knowledge from various machine learning applications, there is now the potential to create more intelligent memory with the capability for optimized trade-off between energy efficiency, area overhead, and classification accuracy on the learning systems. In this dissertation, a review of recently completed works involving video and machine learning memories will be covered. Based on the collected results from a variety of different methods, including: subjective trials, discovered data-mining patterns, software simulations, and hardware power and performance tests, the presented memories provide novel ways to significantly enhance power efficiency for future memory devices.
