State dependent multiple model-based particle filtering for ballistic missile tracking in a low-observable environment

This paper proposes a new method for tracking the whole trajectory of a ballistic missile (BM), in a low-observable environment with ‘imperfect’ sensor measurement incorporating both miss detection and false alarms. A hybrid system with state dependent transition probabilities is proposed where multiple state models represent the ballistic missile movement during different phases; and domain knowledge is exploited to model the transition probabilities between different flight phases in a state-dependent way. The random finite set (RFS) is adopted to model radar sensor measurements which include both miss detection and false alarms. Based on the proposed hybrid modeling system and the RFS represented sensor measurements, a state dependent interacting multiple model particle filtering method integrated with a generalized measurement likelihood function is developed for the BM tracking. Comprehensive simulation studies show that the proposed method outperforms the traditional ones for the BM tracking, with more accurate estimations of flight mode probabilities, positions and velocities

    Air-to-Air Missile Vector Scoring

An air-to-air missile vector scoring system is proposed for test and evaluation applications. Three different linear missile dynamics models are considered: a six-state constant velocity model and nine-state constant acceleration and three-dimensional coordinated turn models. Frequency modulated continuous wave radar sensors, carefully located to provide spherical coverage around the target, provide updates of missile kinematic information relative to a drone aircraft. Data from the radar sensors is fused with predictions from one of the three missile models using either an extended Kalman filter, an unscented Kalman filter or a particle filter algorithm. The performance of all nine model/filter combinations are evaluated through high-fidelity, six-degree of freedom simulations yielding sub-meter end-game accuracy in a variety of scenarios. Simulations demonstrate the superior performance of the unscented Kalman filter incorporating the continuous velocity dynamics model. The scoring system is experimentally demonstrated through flight testing using commercial off the shelf radar sensors with a Beechcraft C-12 as a surrogate missile

Optimal Collision Avoidance Trajectories for Unmanned/Remotely Piloted Aircraft

The post-911 environment has punctuated the force-multiplying capabilities that Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) provides combatant commanders at all echelons on the battlefield. Not only have unmanned aircraft systems made near-revolutionary impacts on the battlefield, their utility and proliferation in law enforcement, homeland security, humanitarian operations, and commercial applications have likewise increased at a rapid rate. As such, under the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Modernization and Reform Act of 2012, the United States Congress tasked the FAA to provide for the safe integration of civil unmanned aircraft systems into the national airspace system (NAS) as soon as practicable, but not later than September 30, 2015. However, a necessary entrance criterion to operate RPAs in the NAS is the ability to Sense and Avoid (SAA) both cooperative and noncooperative air traffic to attain a target level of safety as a traditional manned aircraft platform. The goal of this research effort is twofold: First, develop techniques for calculating optimal avoidance trajectories, and second, develop techniques for estimating an intruder aircraft\u27s trajectory in a stochastic environment. This dissertation describes the optimal control problem associated with SAA and uses a direct orthogonal collocation method to solve this problem and then analyzes these results for different collision avoidance scenarios
