    Restart-Based Fault-Tolerance: System Design and Schedulability Analysis

    Embedded systems in safety-critical environments are continuously required to deliver more performance and functionality, while expected to provide verified safety guarantees. Nonetheless, platform-wide software verification (required for safety) is often expensive. Therefore, design methods that enable utilization of components such as real-time operating systems (RTOS), without requiring their correctness to guarantee safety, is necessary. In this paper, we propose a design approach to deploy safe-by-design embedded systems. To attain this goal, we rely on a small core of verified software to handle faults in applications and RTOS and recover from them while ensuring that timing constraints of safety-critical tasks are always satisfied. Faults are detected by monitoring the application timing and fault-recovery is achieved via full platform restart and software reload, enabled by the short restart time of embedded systems. Schedulability analysis is used to ensure that the timing constraints of critical plant control tasks are always satisfied in spite of faults and consequent restarts. We derive schedulability results for four restart-tolerant task models. We use a simulator to evaluate and compare the performance of the considered scheduling models

    Towards an HLA Run-time Infrastructure with Hard Real-time Capabilities

    Our work takes place in the context of the HLA standard and its application in real-time systems context. The HLA standard is inadequate for taking into consideration the different constraints involved in real-time computer systems. Many works have been invested in order to providing real-time capabilities to Run Time Infrastructures (RTI) to run real time simulation. Most of these initiatives focus on major issues including QoS guarantee, Worst Case Transit Time (WCTT) knowledge and scheduling services provided by the underlying operating systems. Even if our ultimate objective is to achieve real-time capabilities for distributed HLA federations executions, this paper describes a preliminary work focusing on achieving hard real-time properties for HLA federations running on a single computer under Linux operating systems.     Development and implementation of a LabVIEW based SCADA system for a meshed multi-terminal VSC-HVDC grid scaled platform

    This project is oriented to the development of a Supervisory, Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) software to control and supervise electrical variables from a scaled platform that represents a meshed HVDC grid employing National Instruments hardware and LabVIEW logic environment. The objective is to obtain real time visualization of DC and AC electrical variables and a lossless data stream acquisition. The acquisition system hardware elements have been configured, tested and installed on the grid platform. The system is composed of three chassis, each inside of a VSC terminal cabinet, with integrated Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), one of them connected via PCI bus to a local processor and the rest too via Ethernet through a switch. Analogical acquisition modules were A/D conversion takes place are inserted into the chassis. A personal computer is used as host, screen terminal and storing space. There are two main access modes to the FPGAs through the real time system. It has been implemented a Scan mode VI to monitor all the grid DC signals and a faster FPGA access mode VI to monitor one converter AC and DC values. The FPGA application consists of two tasks running at different rates and a FIFO has been implemented to communicate between them without data loss. Multiple structures have been tested on the grid platform and evaluated, ensuring the compliance of previously established specifications, such as sampling and scanning rate, screen refreshment or possible data loss. Additionally a turbine emulator was implemented and tested in Labview for further testing

    Industrial experiences with resource management under software randomization in ARINC653 avionics environments

    Injecting randomization in different layers of the computing platform has been shown beneficial for security, resilience to software bugs and timing analysis. In this paper, with focus on the latter, we show our experience regarding memory and timing resource management when software randomization techniques are applied to one of the most stringent industrial environments, ARINC653-based avionics.     Stress Injection Study on Hard Real-Time Operating Systems

    The automotive software complexity has increased exponentially in the last 30 years. Nowadays, automotive applications are built on top of hard real-time operating system where many tasks are executed. Due to the automotive high integration levels and the time-to-market, software integration and robustness tests should be performed effectively and efficiently. Infineon Technologies for the AURIX 2G microcontroller has integrated a novel hardware architecture to support the Resource Usage Test and the Stress Test. Despite this hardware support, it has never been used before. Then, it is critical to propose a method to efficiently use this structure and to allow the evaluation of the performance and reliability of the chips. This thesis develops a method and a tool that uses stress injection to analyze the performance, robustness values and boundaries of hard real-time systems under different scenarios. The designer is able: i) to configure the embedded debugging hardware architecture to efficiently explore different stress scenarios; ii) to gather information; and to quantify different types of performance and robustness metrics. The method is automated and fully parameterizable. The developed tool in this thesis is called Galenus, it is integrated into the already existing internal debugging environment of Infineon Technologies for the AURIX microcontroller. The stress injection is based on the reduction of the effective performance of a SoC component (e.g., TriCore within AURIX). The stress injection allows to assess the sensitivity of the SoC under different stress scenarios. These scenarios are defined on the offline initial state using formal methods of scheduling theory. Using the stress injection method, the SoC designer can identify possible risk scenarios testing the performance and robustness of the system at runtime.
