Novel transmission schemes for application in two-way cooperative relay wireless communication networks
Recently, cooperative relay networks have emerged as an attractive communications technique that can generate a new form of spatial diversity which is known as cooperative diversity, that can enhance system reliability without sacrificing the scarce bandwidth resource or consuming more transmit
power. To achieve cooperative diversity single-antenna terminals in a wireless relay network typically share their antennas to form a virtual antenna array on the basis of their distributed locations. As such, the same diversity gains as in multi-input multi-output systems can be achieved without requiring multiple-antenna terminals. However, there remain technical challenges to maximize the benefit of cooperative communications, e.g. data rate, asynchronous transmission, interference and outage. Therefore, the focus of this thesis is to exploit cooperative relay networks within two-way transmission schemes. Such schemes have the potential to double the data rate as compared to one-way transmission schemes. Firstly, a new approach to two-way cooperative communications via extended distributed orthogonal space-time block coding (E-DOSTBC) based on phase rotation feedback is proposed with four relay nodes. This scheme can achieve full cooperative diversity and full transmission rate in addition to array gain. Then, distributed orthogonal space-time block coding
(DOSTBC) is applied within an asynchronous two-way cooperative wireless relay network using two relay nodes. A parallel interference cancelation (PIC) detection scheme with low structural and computational complexity is applied at the terminal nodes in order to overcome the effect of imperfect
synchronization among the cooperative relay nodes. Next, a DOSTBC scheme based on cooperative orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) type transmission is proposed for flat fading
channels which can overcome imperfect synchronization in the network. As such, this technique can effectively cope with the effects of fading and timing errors. Moreover, to increase the end-to-end data rate, a closed-loop EDOSTBC approach using through a three-time slot framework is proposed.
A full interference cancelation scheme with OFDM and cyclic prefix type transmission is used in a two-hop cooperative four relay network with asynchronism in the both hops to achieve full data rate and completely cancel the timing error.
The topic of outage probability analysis in the context of multi-relay selection for one-way cooperative amplify and forward networks is then considered. Local measurements of the instantaneous channel conditions are used to select the best single and best two relays from a number of available relays. Asymptotical conventional polices are provided to select the best single and two relays from a number of available relays. Finally, the outage probability of a two-way amplify and forward relay network with best and Mth relay selection is analyzed. The relay selection is performed either on the basis of a max-min strategy or one based on maximizing exact end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio. MATLAB and Maple software based simulations are employed throughout the thesis to support
the analytical results and assess the performance of new algorithms and methods
Distributed space time block coding and application in cooperative cognitive relay networks
The design and analysis of various distributed space time block coding
schemes for cooperative relay networks is considered in this thesis.
Rayleigh frequency flat and selective fading channels are assumed to
model the links in the networks, and interference suppression techniques
together with an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)
type transmission approach are employed to mitigate synchronization
errors at the destination node induced by the different delays through
the relay nodes.
Closed-loop space time block coding is first considered in the context
of decode-and-forward (regenerative) networks. In particular, quasi orthogonal
and extended orthogonal coding techniques are employed for
transmission from four relay nodes and parallel interference cancellation
detection is exploited to mitigate synchronization errors. Availability
of a direct link between the source and destination nodes is studied.
Outer coding is then added to gain further improvement in end-to-end
performance and amplify-and-forward (non regenerative) type networks
together with distributed space time coding are considered to reduce
relay node complexity. A novel detection scheme is then proposed
for decode-and-forward and amplify-and-forward networks with closed-loop
extended orthogonal coding and closed-loop quasi-orthogonal coding
which reduce the computational complexity of the parallel interference cancellation. The near-optimum detector is presented for relay
nodes with single or dual antennas. End-to-end bit error rate simulations
confirm the potential of the approach and its ability to mitigate
synchronization errors
Analysis and Ad-hoc Networking Solutions for Cooperative Relaying Systems
Users of mobile networks are increasingly demanding higher data rates from
their service providers. To cater to this demand, various signal processing
and networking algorithms have been proposed. Amongst them the multiple
input multiple output (MIMO) scheme of wireless communications is one of
the most promising options. However, due to certain physical restrictions,
e.g., size, it is not possible for many devices to have multiple antennas
on them. Also, most of the devices currently in use are single-antenna
devices. Such devices can make use of the MIMO scheme by employing
cooperative MIMO methods. This involves nearby nodes utilizing the antennas
of each other to form virtual antenna arrays (VAAs). Nodes with limited
communication ranges can further employ multi-hopping to be able to
communicate with far away nodes. However, an ad-hoc communications scheme
with cooperative MIMO multi-hopping can be challenging to implement because
of its de-centralized nature and lack of a centralized controling entity
such as a base-station. This thesis looks at methods to alleviate the
problems faced by such networks. In the first part of this thesis, we look,
analytically, at the relaying scheme under consideration and derive closed
form expressions for certain performance measures (signal to noise ratio
(SNR), symbol error rate (SER), bit error rate (BER), and capacity) for the
co-located and cooperative multiple antenna schemes in different relaying
configurations (amplify-and-forward and decode-and-forward) and different
antenna configurations (single input single output (SISO), single input
multiple output (SIMO) and MIMO). These expressions show the importance of
reducing the number of hops in multi-hop communications to achieve a better
performance. We can also see the impact of different antenna configurations
and different transmit powers on the number of hops through these
simplified expressions. We also look at the impact of synchronization errors
on the cooperative MIMO communications scheme and derive a lower bound of
the SINR and an expression for the BER in the high SNR regime. These
expressions can help the network designers to ensure that the quality of
service (QoS) is satisfied even in the worst-case scenarios. In the second
part of the thesis we present some algorithms developed by us to help the
set-up and functioning of cluster-based ad-hoc networks that employ
cooperative relaying. We present a clustering algorithm that takes into
account the battery status of nodes in order to ensure a longer network
life-time. We also present a routing mechanism that is tailored for use in
cooperative MIMO multi-hop relaying. The benefits of both schemes are shown
through simulations.A method to handle data in ad-hoc networks using
distributed hash tables (DHTs) is also presented. Moreover, we also present
a physical layer security mechanism for multi-hop relaying. We also analyze
the physical layer security mechanism for the cooperative MIMO scheme. This
analysis shows that the cooperative MIMO scheme is more beneficial than
co-located MIMO in terms of the information theoretic limits of the
physical layer security.Nutzer mobiler Netzwerke fordern zunehmend höhere Datenraten von ihren

vielversprechendsten Techniken. Jedoch ist aufgrund bestimmter

A Cooperative Network Coding Strategy for the Interference Relay Channel.
In this paper, we study an interference relay network with a satellite as relay. We propose a cooperative strategy based on physical layer network coding and superposition modulation decoding for uni-directional communications among users. The performance of our solution in terms of throughput is evaluated through capacity analysis and simulations that include practical constraints such as the lack of synchronization in time and frequency. We obtain a significant throughput gain compared to the classical time sharing case
Adaptive relay techniques for OFDM-based cooperative communication systems
Cooperative communication has been considered as a cost-effective manner to exploit the spatial diversity, improve the quality-of-service and extend transmission coverage. However, there are many challenges faced by cooperative systems which use relays to forward signals to the destination, such as the accumulation of multipath channels, complex resource allocation with the bidirectional asymmetric traffic and reduction of transmission efficiency caused by additional relay overhead. In this thesis, we aim to address the above challenges of cooperative communications, and design the efficient relay systems.
Starting with the channel accumulation problem in the amplify-and-forward relay system, we proposed two adaptive schemes for single/multiple-relay networks respectively. These schemes exploit an adaptive guard interval (GI) technique to cover the accumulated delay spread and enhance the transmission efficiency by limiting the overhead. The proposed GI scheme can be implemented without any extra control signal. Extending the adaptive GI scheme to multiple-relay systems, we propose a relay selection strategy which achieves the trade-off between the transmission reliability and overhead by considering both the channel gain and the accumulated delay spread. We then consider resource allocation problem in the two-way decode-and-forward relay system with asymmetric traffic loads. Two allocation algorithms are respectively investigated for time-division and frequency-division relay systems to maximize the end-to-end capacity of the two-way system under a capacity ratio constraint. For the frequency-division systems, a balanced end-to-end capacity is defined as the objective function which combines the requirements of maximizing the end-to-end capacity and achieving the capacity ratio. A suboptimal algorithm is proposed for the frequency-division systems which separates subcarrier allocation and time/power allocation. It can achieve the similar performance with the optimal one with reduced complexity. In order to further enhance the transmission reliability and maintaining low processing delay, we propose an equalize-and-forward (EF) relay scheme. The EF relay equalizes the channel between source and relay to eliminate the channel accumulation without signal regeneration. To reduce the processing time, an efficient parallel structure is applied in the EF relay. Numerical results show that the EF relay exhibits low outage probability at the same data rate as compared to AF and DF schemes
On implementation aspects of decode and forward and compress and forward relay protocols
In this work, the common relay protocols Decode-and-Forward and Compress-and-Forward (CF) are investigated from a practical point of view: This involves on the one hand the impact of imperfections like channel and carrier phase stimation errors and on the other hand, the question of how to implement relay protocol specific signal processing like quantization for CF which is modeled in information theory simply by additive quantizer noise. To evaluate the performance, achievable rates are determined either numerically with the help of the Max-Flow Min-Cut theorem or by link level simulations.
