Seamless Infrastructure independent Multi Homed NEMO Handoff Using Effective and Timely IEEE 802.21 MIH triggers
Handoff performance of NEMO BS protocol with existent improvement proposals
is still not sufficient for real time and QoS-sensitive applications and
further optimizations are needed. When dealing with single homed NEMO, handoff
latency and packet loss become irreducible all optimizations included, so that
it is impossible to meet requirements of the above applications. Then, How to
combine the different Fast handoff approaches remains an open research issue
and needs more investigation. In this paper, we propose a new Infrastructure
independent handoff approach combining multihoming and intelligent
Make-Before-Break Handoff. Based on required Handoff time estimation, L2 and L3
handoffs are initiated using effective and timely MIH triggers, reducing so the
anticipation time and increasing the probability of prediction. We extend MIH
services to provide tunnel establishment and switching before link break. Thus,
the handoff is performed in background with no latency and no packet loss while
pingpong scenario is almost avoided. In addition, our proposal saves cost and
power consumption by optimizing the time of simultaneous use of multiple
interfaces. We provide also NS2 simulation experiments identifying suitable
parameter values used for estimation and validating the proposed mode
Securing Handover in Wireless IP Networks
In wireless and mobile networks, handover is a complex process that involves multiple layers of protocol and security executions. With the growing popularity of real time communication services such as Voice of IP, a great challenge faced by handover nowadays comes from the impact of security implementations that can cause performance degradation especially for mobile devices with limited resources.
Given the existing networks with heterogeneous wireless access technologies, one essential research question that needs be addressed is how to achieve a balance between security and performance during the handover. The variations of security policy and agreement among different services and network vendors make the topic challenging even more, due to the involvement of commercial and social factors.
In order to understand the problems and challenges in this field, we study the properties of handover as well as state of the art security schemes to assist handover in wireless IP networks. Based on our analysis, we define a two-phase model to identify the key procedures of handover security in wireless and mobile networks. Through the model we analyze the performance impact from existing security schemes in terms of handover completion time, throughput, and Quality of Services (QoS). As our endeavor of seeking a balance between handover security and performance, we propose the local administrative domain as a security enhanced localized domain to promote the handover performance. To evaluate the performance improvement in local administrative domain, we implement the security protocols adopted by our proposal in the ns-2 simulation environment and analyze the measurement results based on our simulation test
Unified security frameworks for integrated WiMAX and optical broadband access networks
This dissertation proposes the integration of optical and Mobile Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) broadband access networks in order to combine the strengths of optical and wireless technologies and converge them seamlessly. To protect the access network security, this dissertation has developed the design of unified security frameworks for the proposed integrated optical and WiMAX broadband access networks.Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (EPONs) offers a popular broadband access solution, providing high bandwidth and long transmission range to meet users' fast evolving needs. WiMAX provides a wireless broadband solution and it supports mobility. This dissertation proposes a WiMAX over EPON network architecture to provide optical bandwidth for the WiMAX base station (BS). The dissertation also presents a unified security framework for the proposed WiMAX over EPON architecture using public key infrastructure (PKI) and extensible authentication protocol (EAP). The security framework could achieve efficient system management, enhance the system security, and realize unified key management. Furthermore, the dissertation introduces three handover scenarios in the WiMAX over EPON network and describes the corresponding handover schemes based on a pre-authentication method and the communication framework of the ranging step. The proposed handover mechanisms can simplify and accelerate the handover process, compared to the standard WiMAX handover scheme, while keeping the handover procedure secure.Free Space Optics (FSO) provides a relatively flexible optical wireless solution to provide gigabit bandwidth to areas where fiber is costly or hard to deploy. This dissertation also proposes an integrated Mobile WiMAX and FSO broadband access network and presents a unified EAP-based security framework. The dissertation then evaluates and compares the performance of EAP-Transport Layer Security (EAP-TLS) and EAP-Tunneled Transport layer Security (EAP-TTLS) for the FSO-WiMAX network, and also evaluates the impact of the point-to-point FSO link. Measurements show that, compared to EAP-TLS, EAP-TTLS provides a more flexible, efficient, and secure way to protect the integrated FSO-WiMAX access network. Experiments conducted as part of investigation demonstrate that the point-to-point FSO link does not degrade the performance of EAP authentication in the integrated network
Investigating the QoS of Voice over IP using WiMAX Access Networks in a Campus Network
VoIP is a very rapid evolving communication technology which supports transportation of voice data via IP based networks. In parallel, IEEE 802.16e standard based WiMAX is a new emerging access technology and the first generation of 4G broadband access wireless technology with an enhanced in-built quality of service (QoS) provision with many benefits including cost reduction, high quality as well as other value added network service solutions especially for communications Service Providers with emphasis on real time services. WiMAX promises manifold benefits in terms of optimal network performance across a long distance in contrast to other wireless technologies such as Wi-Fi and 3G cellular technologies. Hence, this research attempts to identify some of the network performance parameters that Service Providers will focus on to develop a VoIP over WiMAX communication tool that will serve as a voice communication broadband replacement technology to old circuit-switch voice communication. This study adopted a simulation-based network performance analysis to investigate the effects of the application of different voice encoder schemes on QoS of VoIP system deployed with IEEE 802.16e standard WiMAX network. Through different network simulation experiments using realistic network scenarios in OPNET environment, this research provided an in-depth network performance comparative analysis of VoIP over WiMAX using performance parameters which indicate QoS such as voice jitter, voice packet ETE delay, packet-sent-packet-received, WiMAX network delay, voice packet delay variation and throughput. The obtained simulation experiment results indicated that choice of suitable codec scheme can affect the QoS of VoIP traffic over WiMAX network. The results also indicated that the choice of suitable voice encoder scheme with a small number of voice frame-size per packet have a significant impact over VoIP traffic performance when deployed with WiMAX access technology. Traffic engineering multi-layer optimization for wireless mesh network transmission a campus network routing protocol transmission performance inhancement
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel UniversityThe wireless mesh network is a potential network for the future due to its excellent inherent characteristic for dynamic self-healing, self-configuration and self-organization. It also has the advantage of easy interoperability networking and the ability to form multi-linked ad-hoc networks. It has a decentralized topology, is cheap and highly scalable. Furthermore, its ease in deployment and easy maintenance are other inherent networking qualities. These aforementioned qualities of the wireless mesh network bring advantages to transmission capability of heterogeneous networks. However, transmissions in wireless mesh network create comparative performance based challenges such as congestion, load-balancing, scalability over increasing networks and coverage capacity. Consequently, these challenges and problems in the routing and switching of packets in the wireless mesh network routing protocols led to a proposal on the resolution of these failures with a combination algorithm and a management based security for the network and its transmitted packets. There are equally contentious services like reliability of the network and quality of service for real-time multimedia traffic flows with other challenges such as path computation and selection in the wireless mesh network.
This thesis is therefore a cumulative proposal to the resolution of the outlined challenges and open research areas posed by using wireless mesh network routing protocol. It advances the resolution of these challenges in the mesh environment using a hybrid optimization â traffic engineering, to increase the effectiveness and the reliability of the network. It also proffers a cumulative resolution of the diverse contributions on wireless mesh network routing protocol and transmission. Adaptation and optimization are carried out on the wireless mesh network designed network using traffic engineering mechanism and technique. The research examines the patterns of mesh packet transmission and evaluates the challenges and failures in the mesh network packet transmission. It develops a solution based algorithm for resolutions and proposes the traffic engineering based solution.. These resultant performances and analysis are usually tested and compared over wireless mesh IEEE802.11n or other older proposed documented solution.
This thesis used a carefully designed campus mesh network to show a comparative evaluation of an optimal performance of the mesh nodes and routers over a normal IEE802.11n based wireless domain network to show differentiation by optimization using the created algorithms. Furthermore, the indexes of performance being the metric are used to measure the utility and the reliability, including capacity and throughput at the destination during traffic engineered transmission. In addition, the security of these transmitted data and packets are optimized under a traffic engineered technique. Finally, this thesis offers an understanding to the security contribution using traffic engineering resolution to create a management algorithm for processing and computation of the wireless mesh networks security needs. The results of this thesis confirmed, completed and extended the existing predictions with real measurement

2 dimension woven kenaf reinforced unsaturated polyester composite
In recent years, natural fiber from vegetables such as hemp, sisal, ramie, jute and
kenaf has been recognized and studied by many researchers due to its potential as an
alternative material for synthetic fibers in composite application. Kenaf fiber is a
potential reinforced material for composite due to its acceptable properties and
supported by the development in Malaysian Kenaf cultivation. Previous studies have
demonstrated that Kenaf fibers were recognized in several applications such as
automotive component, panel board, packaging, filter material and industrial paper.
However, the reinforcement of the fibers is in random, unidirectional and particle
form. Therefore, this research is focusing on the composites woven structural
preform from the kenaf fiber assisted with the use of internal geometry modeling for
optimization. The effect of primary parameters, which are the yarns properties, the
fabric count and the weave designs were evaluated on it physical and mechanical
properties. Different woven design preform (plain, twill 4/4, satin 8/3 and basket 4/4)
were fabricated using floor loom and infused with unsaturated polyester resin using
vacuum infusion process. The mechanical properties of the composites were
measured and showed that satin 8/3 has highest tensile strength of 39MPa and Plain
has highest tensile modulus of 2.63GPa, with flexural strength and impact strength of
48MPa and 29kJ/m2
respectively. The use of VIP and UPE show a good infusion of
resin between intra yarns but need much lower viscosity on the UPE for inter yarns.
The used of 5% sodium hydroxide solution with the application of tension during the
treatment enhanced the composite strength of 12%. The stacking sequence and
orientation of 0â°
,45â°,0â° of the laminate composite had increased the flexural strength
and impact strength of 73MPa and of 82MPa respectively. It is recommended to use
a plain and satin structure for better infusion in vacuum infusion proces
Future Trends and Challenges for Mobile and Convergent Networks
Some traffic characteristics like real-time, location-based, and
community-inspired, as well as the exponential increase on the data traffic in
mobile networks, are challenging the academia and standardization communities
to manage these networks in completely novel and intelligent ways, otherwise,
current network infrastructures can not offer a connection service with an
acceptable quality for both emergent traffic demand and application requisites.
In this way, a very relevant research problem that needs to be addressed is how
a heterogeneous wireless access infrastructure should be controlled to offer a
network access with a proper level of quality for diverse flows ending at
multi-mode devices in mobile scenarios. The current chapter reviews recent
research and standardization work developed under the most used wireless access
technologies and mobile access proposals. It comprehensively outlines the
impact on the deployment of those technologies in future networking
environments, not only on the network performance but also in how the most
important requirements of several relevant players, such as, content providers,
network operators, and users/terminals can be addressed. Finally, the chapter
concludes referring the most notable aspects in how the environment of future
networks are expected to evolve like technology convergence, service
convergence, terminal convergence, market convergence, environmental awareness,
energy-efficiency, self-organized and intelligent infrastructure, as well as
the most important functional requisites to be addressed through that
infrastructure such as flow mobility, data offloading, load balancing and
vertical multihoming.Comment: In book 4G & Beyond: The Convergence of Networks, Devices and
