The current study conducted to quantify the research contribution of Library and Information Science (LIS) women faculty of India between 1988 and 2018. The study prepared an inclusive list of Indian universities offering LIS education by visiting its official websites individually and collected the names and other details of the LIS women faculties engaged in the teaching profession. The bibliographical data were extracted from the Scopus database during the year 1988-2018. Finally, a total of 146 research articles published by 38 LIS women faculty in India. The core findings of this study were the majority of research works published in journal articles followed by review articles, conference papers, and book chapters respectively. It was also revealed that LIS women faculty of India tend to publish more in an international platform than a national one. Dual authorship found dominating among the LIS women faculty of India. Further study revealed that P. Mahajan was the most productive LIS women faculty of India from Panjab University. The study result suggests that very small portion participations in research contributions as the current study surveyed 129 universities offering LIS education in India. However, many universities do not have a single LIS women faculty. The University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) can take necessary measures to boost up the research productivity of LIS women faculty of India

Access and Usage of E-Journals by Research Scholars in National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela, Odisha: A Case Study

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to investigate different aspects such as awareness, access and usage of e-journals among the research scholars at Biju Patnaik Central Library (BPCL) of National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela, Odisha. The scope of this paper limits to: (i) E-Resources: Only e-Journal is considered among the various types of e-resources subscribed by library; (ii) Respondents: Only Research scholars are taken into consideration; and (iii) Questionnaires: 150 questionnaires collected from 700 research scholars. This paper also reveals the problems and suggests some solutions. The study shows that User Education Programmes (UEP), stable high-speed internet supply and an adequate number of computers should be provided to ensure constant access that can effectively enhance the usage of e-journals

The paper studies the trends in acquisition of e-resources vis-a-vis their print counterparts, identifies the e-resourcesbeing subscribed by Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) libraries at Kharagpur, Bombay, Madras, Delhi, Kanpur,Guwahati and Roorkee either individually or through a consortium, and analyzes the usage of these resources during2004-11. The study also compiles a union list of all e-resources accessible at IIT Libraries. Data were collected bypersonal visits, interviews, and using a questionnaire. Web sites and annual reports of the Ministry of Human ResourceDevelopment, IITs and INDEST-AICTE Consortium were also scanned to supplement the above information.COUNTER compliant data as provided by the publishers were used to study the usage. Data analysis revealed that IITlibraries spend a significantly large proportion of their budgets to acquire e-resources. There is a clear shift in thecollection development policies of these libraries where e-resources have become a vital part of their core collections.E-resources in all IITs are being heavily used as the number of downloads have increased from 32,33,818 to 76,17,691articles reflecting a growth of 135% over a period of 8 years

Usage of Information and Communication Technology in the Degree College Libraries of Assam: A Study

    Get PDF
The aim of the study was to know the usage of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the degree college libraries of Assam. For solving the research objectives, questionnaire, interview and observation method have been used to collect the primary data from the respondents. The findings of the study have shown that among the 126 college libraries surveyed, 55 libraries are fully automated and 67 are partially automated while 51 libraries have developed institutional repositories. The study also tried to identify the problems associated with the implementation of ICT. Lack of IT skilled manpower to perform ICT related activities in the libraries were among the primary problem faced by the college libraries. The study recommended that the college libraries of Assam should develop ICT infrastructure extensively to make optimal use of the library resources, both conventional and digital

The study assesses and evaluates use of e-resources by 240 subjects, namely post graduate students, research scholars and faculty members at Ratan Tata Library (RTL) of the Delhi School of Economics (DSE) and Faculty of Management Studies Library (FMSL), University of Delhi (DU), Delhi. Highlights problems encountered by the users and suggest remedial measures for their improvement. Authors investigate the use of e-resources through a survey based on a structured questionnaire. Various statistical methods used for data analysis. Study confirmed that all the three classes of subjects are aware with various types of e-resources, e-databases, e-books and e-journals. Suggests improvement in the access facilities, with more computer terminals, high internet speed, including Wi-Fi connectivity and subscription to more e-resources by the Delhi University Library System (DULS). Also finds out whether there is any shift in approach in using electronic resources over print, including internet, websites of RTL and FMS, OPAC, etc. by the users of RTL and FMS. The paper provides some insights concerning the benefits of electronic resources over print resources, i.e., technical ability for a single copy to be made accessible by multiple users; their durability; their use in preservation; the fact they don't go out of print; their ability to support distance learning; and their potential to provide users with access 24/7

Digital literacy is essentially an indispensable skill as technology is rapidly evolving and so is advancement in information resources, especially digital resources. As the use of digital resources continue to rise within higher institutions of learning, students are expected to develop the required digital literacy skills. Digital literacy skill is a basic requirement for students to function effectively in the information society, which is experiencing a paradigm shift from print resources to digital resources. Hence, digital literacy skill becomes very important since the use of digital resources depend on the competences in using digital resources. In the fast-growing knowledge society, information literacy has become one of the most important skills. This is because students with research information needs will most likely use digital resources if they have the skills required for their effective usage. Whilst information literacy seems to be a term that is mostly associated with higher education, its application to digital resources is yet to be widely exploited. In order to foster the development of digital literacy skills through institutional curriculum, this study explores the dimensional constructs of digital literacy with the aim of having students who can use digital tools to advance learning and keeping up with changing technologies as well as become global digital citizens. The dimensional constructs of digital literacy as outlined in this study are important in the use of digital resources because of the proliferation of digital information presently experienced due to a series of developmental digital activities in our world

Research remains an integral part of university postgraduate studies. Literature is a key ingredient of research report writing, while paper based information resources are often difficult to remotely access, the internet has encouraged and enhanced information resources access and use. It is therefore pertinent that universities worldwide should ensure the provision and access to information resources, particularly those available in electronic format. This study thus investigated the use of electronic information resources (EIR) by postgraduate students of the Olabisi Onabanjo University using the Davis Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). A survey research design was adopted for this study and the population for the study comprised Four Hundred and Sixty-Two (462) postgraduate students of the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Nigeria. Using Yamane (1973) formula, Two Hundred and Fourteen respondents were identified for the study. 214 copies of the questionnaire were administered and 183 copies were retrieved. Out of the 183 copies retrieved, 178 copies were found useful for further use. The return date was 83%. The study found that the TAM parameters influence the use of EIRs by the students, the study thus recommend the sustenance of regular subscriptions to the various EIR database being currently provided by the university. The study also recommend that the postgraduate school should partner with librarians in teaching the ‘literature review’ aspect of Research Methodology
