In previous research has established a disaster management information system that is treated with the approach to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) consisting of the phases of mitigation, evacuation and warning his own. Mitigation system that was built covering the field of catastrophe risk modeling using network analysis, mapping mudguard embankment area, information about alternative routes and other public facilities information. Evacuation system provides information on areas that can be used as an evacuation site if a disaster occurs, such as health centers and referral hospitals and information about the stages of evacuation if the disaster occurs.     A multi-criteria approach to dry port location in developing economies with application to Vietnam

    This paper presents a conceptual framework for the inclusion of multiple criteria in the evaluation of dry port location in developing countries from a multiple stakeholder perspective. We present the framework in four steps. The first step encompasses preliminary research to filter the alternative locations for dry port development. In the second step, the stakeholders are clustered in three groups: dry port users, dry port service providers and the wider community. Then, we present the sub-criteria related to dry port location including the associated measuring methods. The third step includes an explanation on the methods used for weighing these criteria and sub-criteria. A multicriteria analysis is carried out in the final step. We apply the methodological framework to Vietnam. The location of a new dry port project in Vinh Phuc province will be evaluated against two existing inland clearance depots (ICD) in Lao Cai and Phu Tho province

    The main research question of this thesis was: What is the optimal location for Kalmar’s European Distribution Center when quantitative and qualitative factors are considered? The aim was to investigate whether or not the current location is optimal and if not, what would be a better location. In order to do that, relevant factors behind the location decision also needed to be determined. This thesis is a combination of case study and action oriented study. It combines both, qualitative and quantitative methods. In the first phase, theoretical background was created for the subsequent empirical phase. It was done by using scientific literature as source material. The aim was to cover the most important themes of warehousing and location decisions in respect of the case company’s situation. The empirical part started with the description of Kalmar’s current supply chain. Then, challenges with the current distribution center location were determined through interviews and observations. Quantitative data of shipments and their destinations was used in center of gravity calculations. The actual location of the center of gravity created a base for searching for a candidate service provider and determining the relevant factors. The factors taken into account were cultural and logistical. After that, the service providers’ competences were evaluated. Prices were taken into account as well. The results were then combined with the AHP method. The result of the center of gravity analysis was a point in the western part of Germany. After closer scrutiny, there occurred to be three possible new service providers within a reasonable distance from the center of gravity. However, the current EDC location was also considered a possible option, and thus there were four candidates. Two of them were in Germany, one in the Netherlands and one (the current) in France. Culturally and logistically the current location was considered the worst and the locations in Germany the best. The service provider in Germany, Mönchengladbach, was seen as the best option also by its competences. Consequently, the most essential result of this thesis is that the optimal location for Kalmar’s EDC would be in Mönchengladbach. However, changing the location there is not the recommended action of this thesis. Relocating has numerous possible complications and thus its implications and costs should be scrutinized more closely before any decision to change the location

    Development of transportation and supply chain problems with the combination of agent-based simulation and network optimization

    Demand drives a different range of supply chain and logistics location decisions, and agent-based modeling (ABM) introduces innovative solutions to address supply chain and logistics problems. This dissertation focuses on an agent-based and network optimization approach to resolve those problems and features three research projects that cover prevalent supply chain management and logistics problems. The first case study evaluates demographic densities in Norway, Finland, and Sweden, and covers how distribution center (DC) locations can be established using a minimizing trip distance approach. Furthermore, traveling time maps are developed for each scenario. In addition, the Nordic area consisting of those three countries is analyzed and five DC location optimization results are presented. The second case study introduces transportation cost modelling in the process of collecting tree logs from several districts and transporting them to the nearest collection point. This research project presents agent-based modelling (ABM) that incorporates comprehensively the key elements of the pick-up and delivery supply chain model and designs the components as autonomous agents communicating with each other. The modelling merges various components such as GIS routing, potential facility locations, random tree log pickup locations, fleet sizing, trip distance, and truck and train transportation. The entire pick-up and delivery operation are modeled by ABM and modeling outcomes are provided by time series charts such as the number of trucks in use, facilities inventory and travel distance. In addition, various scenarios of simulation based on potential facility locations and truck numbers are evaluated and the optimal facility location and fleet size are identified. In the third case study, an agent-based modeling strategy is used to address the problem of vehicle scheduling and fleet optimization. The solution method is employed to data from a real-world organization, and a set of key performance indicators are created to assess the resolution's effectiveness. The ABM method, contrary to other modeling approaches, is a fully customized method that can incorporate extensively various processes and elements. ABM applying the autonomous agent concept can integrate various components that exist in the complex supply chain and create a similar system to assess the supply chain efficiency.Tuotteiden kysyntä ohjaa erilaisia toimitusketju- ja logistiikkasijaintipäätöksiä, ja agenttipohjainen mallinnusmenetelmä (ABM) tuo innovatiivisia ratkaisuja toimitusketjun ja logistiikan ongelmien ratkaisemiseen. Tämä väitöskirja keskittyy agenttipohjaiseen mallinnusmenetelmään ja verkon optimointiin tällaisten ongelmien ratkaisemiseksi, ja sisältää kolme tapaustutkimusta, jotka voidaan luokitella kuuluvan yleisiin toimitusketjun hallinta- ja logistiikkaongelmiin. Ensimmäinen tapaustutkimus esittelee kuinka käyttämällä väestötiheyksiä Norjassa, Suomessa ja Ruotsissa voidaan määrittää strategioita jakelukeskusten (DC) sijaintiin käyttämällä matkan etäisyyden minimoimista. Kullekin skenaariolle kehitetään matka-aikakartat. Lisäksi analysoidaan näistä kolmesta maasta koostuvaa pohjoismaista aluetta ja esitetään viisi mahdollista sijaintia optimointituloksena. Toinen tapaustutkimus esittelee kuljetuskustannusmallintamisen prosessissa, jossa puutavaraa kerätään useilta alueilta ja kuljetetaan lähimpään keräyspisteeseen. Tämä tutkimusprojekti esittelee agenttipohjaista mallinnusta (ABM), joka yhdistää kattavasti noudon ja toimituksen toimitusketjumallin keskeiset elementit ja suunnittelee komponentit keskenään kommunikoiviksi autonomisiksi agenteiksi. Mallinnuksessa yhdistetään erilaisia komponentteja, kuten GIS-reititys, mahdolliset tilojen sijainnit, satunnaiset puunhakupaikat, kaluston mitoitus, matkan pituus sekä monimuotokuljetukset. ABM:n avulla mallinnetaan noutojen ja toimituksien koko ketju ja tuloksena saadaan aikasarjoja kuvaamaan käytössä olevat kuorma-autot, sekä varastomäärät ja ajetut matkat. Lisäksi arvioidaan erilaisia simuloinnin skenaarioita mahdollisten laitosten sijainnista ja kuorma-autojen lukumäärästä sekä tunnistetaan optimaalinen toimipisteen sijainti ja tarvittava autojen määrä. Kolmannessa tapaustutkimuksessa agenttipohjaista mallinnusstrategiaa käytetään ratkaisemaan ajoneuvojen aikataulujen ja kaluston optimoinnin ongelma. Ratkaisumenetelmää käytetään dataan, joka on peräisin todellisesta organisaatiosta, ja ratkaisun tehokkuuden arvioimiseksi luodaan lukuisia keskeisiä suorituskykyindikaattoreita. ABM-menetelmä, toisin kuin monet muut mallintamismenetelmät, on täysin räätälöitävissä oleva menetelmä, joka voi sisältää laajasti erilaisia prosesseja ja elementtejä.     Selection of Integrators in Malaysia’s local broiler industry: Prioritization of critical factors based on Growers’ perspectives

    The Malaysian broiler industry is an integral component of the agriculture sector that generate sustainable food supplies to almost 30 million populations in the country. The industry comprises of conventional and commercial farms for which the latter is more sustainable with contract farming schemes and involvement of major integrators and growers.The survival of local growers as one of the important players within broiler’s supply chain hierarchy is largely depending on the integrators.Hence, this study aims to identify critical factors that local growers consider when selecting their integrators. Specifically, the objective is to prioritize integrators’ selection factors and to determine the critical ranking of each factor. Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) approach is employed to evaluate and rank the importance of the said factors based on inputs from selected broilers’ representatives.Five main criteria are identified and considered in the AHP analysis that include relationships, reliability, logistics, input and price. The result indicates that reliability had been given the highest priority, followed by pricing factor, input criteria, relationships with the integrator, and finally the logistics facility.For overall sub-criteria, supplied quantity had been ranked number one, followed by price of raw materials, availability of day-old chick, quality conformance, technology sharing, and in-house logistics facility.In the end, how this study impacted local broiler industry is explained. Certain issues and future direction of this study are also discussed

    The pre-positioning of warehouses at regional and local levels for a humanitarian relief organisation

    Using pre-positioned warehouses at strategic locations around the world is an approach commonly taken by some humanitarian relief organisations to improve their capacities to deliver sufficient relief aid within a relatively short time frame, and to provide shelter and assistance to disaster victims. Although research into the facility location problem is extensive in both theory and application, such approaches have received little attention from the humanitarian relief perspective. In this paper we consider the pre-positioning of warehouses for humanitarian relief organisations from both macro- (which country, which region) and micro-(the immediate locality) perspectives, and analyse the managerial implications of those decisions. In case study A, managerial level officers were interviewed in order to obtain data for an analysis of the positioning of warehouses at a regional level. Case study B identifies a specific location in the Dubai area where stakeholders from different organisations participated in both discussions and interviews. Through the use of the Analytic Hierarchy Process, the relative importance of individual criteria was determined. The fuzzy-TOPSIS method was used to obtain the final ranking of locations where linguistic values handle the vagueness and subjectivity of decisions. The contribution of this work is as follows: useful managerial insights and implications related to the pre-positioning of warehouses at both macro- and micro-levels are provided; further, a range of possible locations for a humanitarian relief organization, using a robust multicriteria decision making framework, is proposed
