6G Mobile-Edge Empowered Metaverse: Requirements, Technologies, Challenges and Research Directions
The Metaverse has emerged as the successor of the conventional mobile
internet to change people's lifestyles. It has strict visual and physical
requirements to ensure an immersive experience (i.e., high visual quality, low
motion-to-photon latency, and real-time tactile and control experience).
However, the current communication systems fall short to satisfy these
requirements. Mobile edge computing (MEC) has been indispensable to enable low
latency and powerful computing. Moreover, the sixth generation (6G) networks
promise to provide end users with high-capacity communications to MEC servers.
In this paper, we bring together the primary components into a 6G mobile-edge
framework to empower the Metaverse. This includes the usage of heterogeneous
radios, intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS), non-orthogonal multiple access
(NOMA), and digital twins (DTs). We also discuss novel communication paradigms
(i.e., semantic communication, holographic-type communication, and haptic
communication) to further satisfy the demand for human-type communications and
fulfil user preferences and immersive experiences in the Metaverse
Visual Distortions in 360-degree Videos.
Omnidirectional (or 360°) images and videos are emergent signals being used in many areas, such as robotics and virtual/augmented reality. In particular, for virtual reality applications, they allow an immersive experience in which the user can interactively navigate through a scene with three degrees of freedom, wearing a head-mounted display. Current approaches for capturing, processing, delivering, and displaying 360° content, however, present many open technical challenges and introduce several types of distortions in the visual signal. Some of the distortions are specific to the nature of 360° images and often differ from those encountered in classical visual communication frameworks. This paper provides a first comprehensive review of the most common visual distortions that alter 360° signals going through the different processing elements of the visual communication pipeline. While their impact on viewers' visual perception and the immersive experience at large is still unknown-thus, it is an open research topic-this review serves the purpose of proposing a taxonomy of the visual distortions that can be encountered in 360° signals. Their underlying causes in the end-to-end 360° content distribution pipeline are identified. This taxonomy is essential as a basis for comparing different processing techniques, such as visual enhancement, encoding, and streaming strategies, and allowing the effective design of new algorithms and applications. It is also a useful resource for the design of psycho-visual studies aiming to characterize human perception of 360° content in interactive and immersive applications
open / close: assimilating immersive spaces in visual communication
I am interested in two spaces obverse to each other: open and closed. An open space develops organically based on how people inhabit it. Interacting with an open space is a dynamic, sporadic, multisensory, immersive, and subjective experience. In such spaces, we are confronted with an alternative aesthetic, one that is in conflict with the seamlessness of a closed space. A closed space is anchored on definite variables like structure, use and boundaries. While interaction between people and space is important, the space is tightly controlled and interaction is designed. Through this thesis project, I present a method that metaphorically transforms the experience of a walk through a closed space into an open-ended and immersive experience.
When space develops as a response to our actions, it affords intimacy and a sense of belonging. It facilitates deeper expressiveness through engagement. By applying a method that uses fragmentation, recurrence and motion, I am metaphorically transforming an urban closed space to open. Through this transformation I am creating a fresh person-space dialogue that temporarily destabilizes perception and encourages physical sensation which allows for an intimate experience of the space. An immersive interaction with an open space transgresses the urban sterility of a closed space and is capable of creating a diversity of distinct experiences
An Immersive Telepresence System using RGB-D Sensors and Head Mounted Display
We present a tele-immersive system that enables people to interact with each
other in a virtual world using body gestures in addition to verbal
communication. Beyond the obvious applications, including general online
conversations and gaming, we hypothesize that our proposed system would be
particularly beneficial to education by offering rich visual contents and
interactivity. One distinct feature is the integration of egocentric pose
recognition that allows participants to use their gestures to demonstrate and
manipulate virtual objects simultaneously. This functionality enables the
instructor to ef- fectively and efficiently explain and illustrate complex
concepts or sophisticated problems in an intuitive manner. The highly
interactive and flexible environment can capture and sustain more student
attention than the traditional classroom setting and, thus, delivers a
compelling experience to the students. Our main focus here is to investigate
possible solutions for the system design and implementation and devise
strategies for fast, efficient computation suitable for visual data processing
and network transmission. We describe the technique and experiments in details
and provide quantitative performance results, demonstrating our system can be
run comfortably and reliably for different application scenarios. Our
preliminary results are promising and demonstrate the potential for more

A 3D immersive discrete event simulator for enabling prototyping of factory layouts
There is an increasing need to eliminate wasted time and money during factory layout design and subsequent construction. It is presently difficult for engineers to foresee if a certain layout is optimal for work and material flows. By exploiting modelling, simulation and visualisation techniques, this paper presents a tool concept called immersive WITNESS that combines the modelling strengths of Discrete Event Simulation (DES) with the 3D visualisation strengths of recent 3D low cost gaming technology to enable decision makers make informed design choices for future factories layouts. The tool enables engineers to receive immediate feedback on their design choices. Our results show that this tool has the potential to reduce rework as well as the associated costs of making physical prototypes

Abstract. Presence is widely accepted as the key concept to be considered in any research involving human interaction with Virtual Reality (VR). Since its original description, the concept of presence has developed over the past decade to be considered by many researchers as the essence of any experience in a virtual environment. The VR generating systems comprise two main parts: a technological component and a psychological experience. The different relevance given to them produced two different but coexisting visions of presence: the rationalist and the psychological/ecological points of view.
