    Potential of X-ray computed tomography for 3D anatomical analysis and microdensitometrical assessment in wood research with focus on wood modification

    Studying structure and chemistry of wood and wood-based materials is the backbone of all wood research and many techniques are at hand to do so. A very valuable modality is X-ray computed tomography (CT), able to non-destructively probe the three-dimensional (3D) structure and composition. In this paper, we elaborate on the use of Nanowood, a flexible multi-resolution X-ray CT set-up developed at UGCT, the Ghent University Centre for X-ray Tomography. The technique has been used successfully in many different fields of wood science. It is illustrated how 3D structural and microdensitometrical data can be obtained using different scan set-ups and protocols. Its potential for the analysis of modified wood is exemplified, e.g. for the assessment of wood treated with hydrophobing agents, localisation of modification agents, pathway analysis related to functional tissues, dimensional changes due to thermal treatment, etc. Furthermore, monitoring of transient processes is a promising field of activity too

    ACR Accreditation for Utah Valley Hospital’s Radiation Oncology Center

    Becoming an accredited clinic through the American College of Radiology (ACR) and their Radiation Oncology Practice Accreditation (ROPA) program will provide third-party evaluation of patient care to ensure the best treatment possible for patients. Talk of getting ACR accreditation has occurred in the past for Utah Valley Hospital/American Fork Hospital, but at the time it was seen as something that did not provide sufficient value vs. the cost. The recent One Intermountain restructuring is intended to unify all of the Intermountain Healthcare radiation oncology centers in Utah so the Radiation Oncology Director has set the goal that all Intermountain radiation oncology programs will be accredited. Intermountain Medical Center (IMC) and Dixie Regional Medical Center (DRMC) are currently ACR accredited and can be used as model programs. I started with an in-depth examination of our department’s workflow, documentation, and policies in order to determine where improvements to meet ACR accreditation standards could be made. I followed this up by working on implementing some of these improvements throughout the clinic and made sure they become routine and a standard in the department. An analysis of Dixie Regional Medical Center and Intermountain Medical Center’s ACR documents was performed to provide a baseline of an accredited-ACR program. Finally, a comprehensive checklist of everything that will need to be changed or implemented was presented in order to provide guidance for the future

    Reading the Readers: Modelling Complex Humanities Processes to Build Cognitive Systems

    The ink and stylus tablets discovered at the Roman Fort of Vindolanda are a unique resource for scholars of ancient history. However, the stylus tablets have proved particularly difficult to read. This paper describes the initial stages in the development of a computer system designed to aid historians in the reading of the stylus tablets. A detailed investigation was undertaken, using Knowledge Elicitation techniques borrowed from Artificial IntelliJOURce, Cognitive Psychology, and Computational Linguistics, to elicit the processes experts use whilst reading an ancient text. The resulting model was used as the basis of a computer architecture to construct a system which takes in images of the tablets and outputs plausible interpretations of the documents. It is demonstrated that using Knowledge Elicitation techniques can further the understanding of complex processes in the humanities, and that these techniques can provide an underlying structure for the basis of a computer system that replicates that process. As such it provides significant insight into how experts work in the humanities, whilst providing the means to develop tools to assist them in their complex task

    Fast fluorescence microscopy for imaging the dynamics of embryonic development

    Live imaging has gained a pivotal role in developmental biology since it increasingly allows real-time observation of cell behavior in intact organisms. Microscopes that can capture the dynamics of ever-faster biological events, fluorescent markers optimal for in vivo imaging, and, finally, adapted reconstruction and analysis programs to complete data flow all contribute to this success. Focusing on temporal resolution, we discuss how fast imaging can be achieved with minimal prejudice to spatial resolution, photon count, or to reliably and automatically analyze images. In particular, we show how integrated approaches to imaging that combine bright fluorescent probes, fast microscopes, and custom post-processing techniques can address the kinetics of biological systems at multiple scales. Finally, we discuss remaining challenges and opportunities for further advances in this field
