IUPUC Spatial Innovation Lab
During the summer of 2016 the IUPUC ME Division envi-sioned the concept of an âImagineering Labâ based largely on academic makerspace concepts. Important sub-sections of the Imagineering Lab are its âActualization Labâ (mecha-tronics, actuators, sensors, DAQ devices etc.) and a âSpatial Innovation Labâ (SIL) based on developing âdream stationsâ (computer work stations) equipped with exciting new tech-nology in intuitive 2D and 3D image creation and Virtual Reality (VR) technology. The objective of the SIL is to cre-ate a work flow converting intuitively created imagery to an-imation, engineering simulation and analysis and computer driven manufacturing interfaces. This paper discusses the challenges and methods being used to create a sustainable Spatial Innovation Lab
Currents of Consumption: How National Narratives of Japanese Cuisine Collide with Localized Forms of Sushi in Northern California
This paper examines how national narratives of Japanese cuisine collide with the expectations, preferences, and perceptions of American consumers (particularly Northern California). The global economy has benefited the circulation of positive images of Japan managed by the Japanese government, but the commercialization of Japanese cuisine is also at odds with government efforts. In Japan, sushi is often synonymous with nigirizushi: sliced seafood and a daub of wasabi atop vinegared rice. As part of Japanâs washoku tradition, this singular image of sushi (allegedly) reflects the deepest essence of Japanese cultural sensibilities tied to simplicity, perfection, and nature. But in America, consumersâ deep-fried sensibilities mean sushi is synonymous with Americanized makizushi: sauce drenched, tempura stuffed rolls and other unorthodox ingredients. Using scholarly sources juxtapositioned against popular narratives and original fieldwork, I interrogate how authenticity has two meanings. While authenticity can refer to a sense of accuracy or expectation, such expectations can be established personally or by proxy via âexpertsâ. I stress that while static food culture narratives are supported by some restaurateurs, many consciously make concessions to appeal to customers. I supplement my analysis of interviews with Japanese sushi chefs in popular documentaries with original surveys and interviews with two Non-Japanese who have a decade of experience working and running sushi restaurants in Northern California. Although focused on sushi as a case study, this paper engages with themes of nostalgia, tourism, media, politics and communications that highlight how there are many different currents that contribute to global consumption and exchange
Visual Design Process: Communicating with Storyboarding and Augmented Reality
In the building profession, it is essential for architects to communicate clearly and effectively
to numerous people. This thesis introduces a design process utilizing two visual toolsâ Storyboarding
and Augmented Realityâas a methodology for stronger visual communication. Storyboarding
is a visual design tool that communicates concepts, ideas, and specifics quickly through
clear illustrations. It allows designers to visually communicate to a team and change ideas during
the development phase of a project. Augmented Reality is a visual tool that communicates superimposed
digital information through a composite view of the real and digital world. This gives
designers the ability to present more information about completed projects. Through further
investigation of this design process, I have found that it is the balance between the two and the
transition of information between design phases that allows for a brand new process of visual
communication throughout a design projectâs entirety. In the building profession, it is essential for architects to communicate clearly and effectively

Systematic composition of distributed objects: Processes and sessions
We consider a system with the infrastructure for the creation and interconnection of large numbers of distributed persistent objects. This system is exemplified by the Internet: potentially, every appliance and document on the Internet has both persistent state and the ability to interact with large numbers of other appliances and documents on the Internet. This paper elucidates the characteristics of such a system, and proposes the compositional requirements of its corresponding infrastructure. We explore the problems of specifying, composing, reasoning about and implementing applications in such a system. A specific concern of our research is developing the infrastructure to support structuring distributed applications by using sequential, choice and parallel composition, in the anarchic environment where application compositions may be unforeseeable and interactions may be unknown prior to actually occurring. The structuring concepts discussed are relevant to a wide range of distributed applications; our implementation is illustrated with collaborative Java processes interacting over the Internet, but the methodology provided can be applied independent of specific platforms

Performing Disney: Exploring guests' narratives of Disney theme parks
This thesis focuses on performances in relation to Disney theme parks. The project asks: How do guests narrate their Disney theme park performances? This question is examined by conducting semi-structured interviews with people who had been to a Disney theme park within the last three years. The findings were analyzed looking at ways guests performed in relation to fellow performers, and the setting. The findings showcased multiple ways in which guest reported they performed while on their theme park holidays. Many performances began long before traveling by reviewing scripts and making preparations. Informants described both highly structured and improvised performances. Many performances were choreographed around dining reservations. Ideas as to what constituted a successful or unsuccessful performance are provided. Several types of performances are examined. Performances were influenced by navigating different settings and environments and enhanced by other actors. In conclusion there are a multitude of performances to be considered within these themed parks
